  • Why: The Beach family accused Parker’s of negligently selling alcohol to 19-year-old Paul Murdaugh before he piloted a boat that crashed into a creek in 2019 and killed Beach.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in a South Carolina court of common pleas.

A South Carolina gas station agreed to pay $15 million in a lawsuit settlement to the family of a 19-year-old girl who died after a boat piloted by the son of disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh crashed into a creek in 2019.

Parker’s Corp., a gas station and convenience store chain, is accused of negligence by selling alcohol to 19-year-old Paul Murdaugh prior to the boating accident that took the life of Mallory Beach, Law360 reports.

The Beach family argues a cashier working at Parker’s failed to properly inspect the ID Alex Murdaugh used — which actually belonged to his older brother, Buster — to purchase alcohol, Law360 reports.

The Beach family reportedly confirmed the settlement agreement, which came around a month before the lawsuit was set to go to trial.

Charges against Paul Murdaugh dropped after June 2021 murder

Paul’s father, Alex Murdaugh, is incarcerated in South Carolina after being convicted and sentenced to life in prison for murdering both Paul and his mother, Maggie Murdaugh, in 2021, allegedly as a distraction from his own legal woes.

Prosecutors argue Alex Murdaugh, a longtime prominent personal-injury lawyer, faced growing financial pressures and an investigation over claims he stole more than $8 million from his law firm and its clients over the years, Law360 reports.

Paul Murdaugh was charged with multiple felonies following the boating accident; however, all the charges against him were dropped after his death in June 2021.

The plaintiffs are represented by Mark Tinsley.

The Murdaugh gas station lawsuit is Beach v. Gregory M. Parker Inc. d/b/a Parker’s Corp., et al., Case No. 2019-CP-25-00111, in the Hampton County Court of Common Pleas, Fourteenth Judicial District, South Carolina.

No they weren’t negligent. They were brothers. They both had red hair. She scanned the id. They’re not supposed to exam all the details on the ID. I could see if they didn’t even ask for an ID. But l, no I don’t think the gas station was responsible for the alcohol consumption. Should’ve charged the brother Buster, he probably gave him the ID. I mean the parents should’ve been held responsible at least. They condoned and supplied him and his friends alcohol on multiple occasions. He became an alcoholic and they were the negligent ones.
