Boppy Pillow Lounger Recall Overview:

  • Who: The Boppy Company, in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has recalled all of its Boppy Pillow Loungers.
  • Why: The company says that the pillows advertised for use with babies pose a suffocation hazard and reports that between 2015 and 2020 eight infants have died after being placed in a Boppy pillow.
  • Where: The recall affects consumers nationwide.

The Boppy Company has issued a massive recall covering more than 3.3 million of its pillow loungers meant for infants due to a suffocation hazard.

The recall covers Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers, according to a notice posted by the CPSC Thursday. The products were sold in a variety of colors and fashions and distributed to a number of retailers, including Pottery Barn Kids, Target, and Walmart, and online at Amazon.com.

The recalled Boppy pillow loungers were sold between 2004 through September of this year for between $30 and $44.

Boppy Pillow Lounger Results in Suffocation

“Infants can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow or soft bedding that obstructs breathing,” warns the agency, instructing consumers to stop using the recalled Boppy pillow loungers immediately.

The company says that it has received eight reports of infant deaths associated with The Boppy Company Newborn Lounger products.

“The infants reportedly suffocated after being placed on their back, side or stomach on the lounger and were found on their side or on their stomach,” says a recall notice on the company’s website.

Steps to Get a Boppy Pillow Lounger Refund

The Boppy Company is offering a refund for the recalled pillow lounger. In order to obtain a refund, consumers must take the following steps:

  • Fill out a form on the Boppy Pillow Lounger recall website
  • Provide the UPC or Item Number, along with the Date Code of the product
  • Provide a copy of the receipt if possible
  • Cut the Boppy pillow in half and provide a picture to the company by text, email, or mail.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other infant product recalls to help keep consumers informed.

Indeed, this summer, the CPSC announced new rules for dangerous infant sleep products this summer.

“CPSC continues to emphasize that the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard. Parents and caregivers should never add blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their backs,” states the agency’s Boppy pillow lounger recall notice.
