Bauer Forced Air Propane Portable Heaters Recall Overview:

  • Who: Harbor Freight Tools
  • What: About 19,000 Bauer Forced Air Propane Portable Heaters are being recalled due to a fire hazard.
  • Where: Nationwide

After one fire and more than a dozen reports of leaking gas, Harbor Freight Tools is recalling one of its portable heaters.

In a recall issued on Sept. 16 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company stated it was recalling about 19,000 of its Bauer Forced Air Propane Portable Heaters due to a fire risk.

So far, the firm has received 13 reports of propane gas leaking, including one report of a fire. No injuries have been reported.

Harbor Freight Tools is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

The company said the issue is the fitting at the back of the heater can be too loose, causing the heater to leak propane gas and posing a fire hazard. The company is asking consumers to stop using the product, and to try to test it themselves.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled propane portable heaters and inspect the heaters with a soapy water leak test per these instructions from Harbor Freight to determine that the fitting at the back of the unit is not leaking,” the recall says.

Harbor Freight is contacting all known purchasers directly with updated instructions for use and detailed instructions on how to inspect and tighten the fittings on the heaters if necessary, using a wrench supplied with the product.

If the gas continues to leak after self-inspection and appropriate tightening, Harbor Freight Tools should be contacted for further instructions the recall stated.

The heater was sold at Harbor Freight Tools stores nationwide and online at www.harborfreight.com from November 2020 until March 5, 2021 for about $100, according to the recall.

In 2018, Harbor Freight Tools and consumers reached a settlement over a class action lawsuit claiming that the tool company falsely advertised “normal” prices for products that were higher than an advertised “sale” price, when the item had never been offered at the original, higher price.
