Chevy Bolt Recall Overview:
- Who: General Motors recalls all 2019-2022 Chevrolet Bolts.
- Why: A persistent battery problem in the electrical vehicles could lead to fires.
- Where: Based in Detroit, GM has recalled all Chevy Bolts worldwide.
General Motors (GM) has expanded its Chevy Bolt recall to include all models from 2019 through 2022 that have been sold worldwide due to a battery problem that increases the risk of vehicle fires.
After a series of Chevy Bolt recalls plaguing the automaker during the last year, GM announced Friday warned that all of the vehicles may be equipped with defective batteries. The company says that it was supplied with batteries that may may have two manufacturing defects, a torn anode tab and folded separator, in the same battery cell
GM says that the defective battery in the Chevy Bolt increases the risk of fire.
GM says it will replace the defective batteries in all Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs, according to a statement from the company. So far, that brings the Chevy Bolt recall costs to about $1.8 billion.
While waiting for a replacement, the automaker says that Chevy Bolt owners affected by the worldwide recall should take the following steps to remain safe:
- Using the Target Level Move, set the vehicle to a 90 percent charge limit.
- Charge their Chevy Bolt more frequently to avoid going below a 70 mile range.
- Park the Bolt outside after charging and refrain from charging the vehicle inside overnight.
Battery Fires Led to Worldwide GM Chevy Bolt Recall
The recall stems from LG-manufactured lithium ion batteries that are used in the Chevy Bolt electrical vehicles. In Nov. 2020, Chevy Bolt owners filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors for this same battery defect that had allegedly caused serious injuries.
General Motors says will notify affected customers when replacement battery parts are ready for installation. “GM is working aggressively with LG” to expedite this process, GM said in a statement.

Hello everyone, I’m one of those “lucky” consumers who bought a 2021 Bolt last June. After hearing about the fires, I parked the car in my driveway and stopped using it. My Bolt has approximately 2,450 miles. About two weeks ago I went to GM’s Chat line as instructed and asked GM to buy my car back. I was told by the “Bolt Repurchase Team” I would hear from them in 10 days. Last week I got a call from a lady who introduced herself as “The GM Concierge” assigned to my case. “Mr. F, I’m calling to answer any questions you may have…” But after asking some off-the-wall questions, she finally told me the real reason for her call. “I’m calling to tell you GM is not repurchasing Bolts any more. GM will fix your car.” I will instruct the Repurchase Team not to escalate your request any further. She did not say when my car would be fixed, what will be replaced (at GM’s discretion), etc. In the mean time, I won’t put my family in the back seat because I fear for their safety even after the recall gets implemented. Let’s be clear. I have not been to the shop umpteen times for repairs as NYS Lemon Law requires. I believe this car was unsafe to drive the day it left the factory. The 2021 Bolt I own does not perform the functions it was intended to perform, and does not meet basic safety requirements consumers are entitled to. I need to know what options I have as a consumer. This is an outrage.
I have DEMANDED a 100% refund for every dime I paid for my 2020 Bolt-EV, to include all taxes, fees, etc.., every dime. Keep in mind and make no mistake, GM was selling 2020 onward Bolt-EVs KNOWING there were real concerns about fires in those cars!! DECEPTION LIKE THAT IS ILLEGAL!
I gave GM a deadline to agree to my DEMANDS…, they did agree to repurchase, but, have tried to delay their agreeing for 4-6 weeks…, twice.
I’m tired of being run around by Chevy during my buyback process. I cannot get straight answers on if I can get my bolt replaced with another EV in the spring as GM does not have any EVs available right now. Cadillac and GMC have EVs being developed and on preoder, and Chevy will reveal its Silverado EV in January. Give me a straight answer, can I get in line for one of these vehicles??
Recall happened 4 days after bought 2021 Bolt near the end of august 2021. Now I am not supposed to use 40% of the range????
I AM COMPLETLY DISGUSTED WITH GENERAL MOTORS’ RESPONSE TO THIS ATROCITY AND THEIR COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR US BOLT OWNERS. THEY WILL NEVER – NEVER BE ABLE TO REPLACE ALL THE BATTERIES AND OBVIOUSLY DONT CARE ONE BIT ABOUT US LOYAL (EX LOYAL) GM CUSTOMERS.
This is Involving the 2021 Jeep cluster recall how much should be offered my vehicle was in the dealership for them to repair for 3 months
I recently purchased a 2021 Chevy Bolt EV
