Porsche is recalling about 43,000 of its Taycan electric four-door vehicles worldwide after multiple owners reported experiencing a total loss of power while driving, with some unable to restart after stopping.

The recall was posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website June 29. The North American recall said 10,373 Porsche Taycans from 2020 and 2021 were being called back in the United States due to the issue.

“A loss of motive power increases the risk of crash,” the NHTSA said.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits

The NHTSA said an investigation was opened on May 17 this year after the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received nine complaints from vehicle owners alleging a loss of power while in motion at any speed, without any warning to the driver.

“The monitoring software can incorrectly detect a fault and shutdown the power train, causing a loss of motive power,” the NHTSA said.

The issue relates to the Taycan’s battery. The Taycan is an 800-volt battery electric vehicle with an auxiliary 12V battery, the NHTSA said.

All of the complaints the ODI received alleged that the loss of power happened without any warning or error messages about a battery fault. Six owners said they then couldn’t turn on the car after it lost power.

“A loss of charge in the 12V battery may deactivate the entire electrical system and prevent the vehicle from operation,” the NHTSA said.

According to Car and Driver, about 43,000 Taycans are affected worldwide and the list includes all models from model years 2020 and 2021.

In the United States, the recall affects certain 2020-2021 Taycan Turbo, Taycan Turbo S, Taycan 4S, 2021 Taycan, Taycan Cross Turismo, Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, Taycan 4S Cross Turismo, and Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo vehicles.

Porsche Cars North America said dealers would reprogram the power electronics and the engine control unit for owners for free. Owners are expected to get notification via mail by Aug. 27, 2021, but they may contact Porsche prior at 1-800-767-7243.

This is not the first recall for the Porsche Taycan. In March, certain Taycans were recalled due to loose suspension components that can detach, increasing the risk of a crash.
