GM engines class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Rachel Buchholz filed a class action lawsuit against General Motors LLC.
  • Why: Buchholz claims GM knowingly sold model year 2014-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles allegedly equipped with defective 2.4-liter engines.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Missouri federal court.

General Motors sold and leased certain Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles containing defective 2.4-liter engines that are unable to properly utilize their engine oil, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Rachel Buchholz claims GM knew when selling the vehicles that the 2.4-liter engines contained a defect that allegedly caused them to improperly burn off and/or “consume abnormally high amounts of oil.”

Buchholz argues the 2.4-liter engines contain piston and piston ring assemblies that were faultily designed and low-tension oil rings—installed by GM—that allegedly do not “maintain sufficient tension to keep oil in the crank case.”

“The Oil Consumption Defect is a substantial safety concern because it causes excessive oil consumption that cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted, and causes the engine to run while dangerously low on engine oil,” states the GM class action.

Buchholz wants to represent a Missouri class of current and former owners or lessees of a model year 2014-2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter engine.

Alleged GM engine defect puts Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain vehicle owners in danger, says class action

Consumers who own a Chevrolet Equinox or GMC Terrain vehicle with the allegedly defective 2.4-liter engine are in danger of engine fire, unexpected engine shutdowns, vehicle jerking, and unexpected loss of power, among other things, the GM class action alleges.

“The Oil Consumption Defect is unreasonably dangerous because it can cause engine failure while the Class Vehicles are in operation at any time and under any driving conditions or speeds,” states the GM class action.

Buchholz claims GM is in violation of the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. She is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with an award of compensatory, actual, and punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against GM in 2019 by a consumer arguing the automaker sold Chevrolet Equinox SUVs that allegedly burned through motor oil at an excessive rate, leading to engine damage.

My daughter’s 2013 Terrain is doing exactly what has been described, I called GM and had been told that her car qualified for the repair. She took it into the GM dealer here in Fairbanks, AK and they are refusing to fix it. She only purchased this vehicle a year ago!

  2. Thomas Middleton says:

What do I do now? My 2013 GMC Terrain started showing signs of excessive oil consumption late last year and now just in January, the engine failed and was inoperable! I had to scrap it and buy a truck after paying plenty to get it assessed and told it’s needed a new engine. I’m in TN. Who do I speak to!?

  3. Deanna McDermott says:

I bought a 2017 Chevy Equinox and I have to add about a quart of oil weekly. No leaks or drips. I hope the lawsuit covers Mississippi! With fuel prices and adding this much oil it’s breaking the bank!

I have had the o2 sensors replaced had diagnostic charges from the turbo and had to keep oil changes every 3k miles it constantly shakes and has severe delay in power acts like it has issues getting fuel iy has given a lean code and engine light multiple times and it goes in to emergency mode alot which has almost got me hit severa ltimes.. on top of the fact that the brakes feel like I’m constantly dragging something dont stop properly.. it keeps throwing my vehicle out of alignment I literally have to have an alignment done every couple weeks! I’m over it its a death trap!! When mentioned to Gm or chevy dealership.. they gaslight me or threaten me and refuse to do anything about it! I’ll never buy another!

2017 Chevy Equinox, thought it was maybe just high miles but burns over 5 qts between oil changes. No drops in driveway.

  6. John Caminsky says:

  7. Paul says:

Our 2016 GMC Terrain that we are still paying off started burning oil almost immediately after purchasing it. It is not a leak but 100% burning it up. Not a drop in our driveway. I have to put 2-3 qaurts of oil in it on average a month. This is by far the worst vehicle we have ever purchased.

  8. Iris says:

My 2015 equinox with the same motor here in Texas is burning oil like crazy. I have to get an oil change every month. And even in between oil changes I have to top up constantly. Hopefully this lawsuit comes to Texas.

My 2015 Chevy Equinox started to jump and wouldn’t accelerate. I fixed it a year ago then just 2 months ago it started back up again this time it wouldn’t start back up. It got towed to the same shop I had previously took it. He said there was absolutely no oil in it I responded with I get it done regularly as to when my oil light says change oil. Carsheild was a joke! Do not purchase it!
