Owners of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon — a limited-run, street-legal race car that retails for more than $84,000 — say the car has a known defect, and its makers are trying to dodge responsibility for it.

A group of Demon owners filed the class action complaint in a California federal court, alleging Dodge’s owner Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) sold a product with a fault, Muscle Cars and Trucks reported. FCA has recently merged with Groupe PSA to form auto giant Stellantis.

Only 3,300 Dodge Demons were produced, to ensure their continued collectibility. On the resale market, they’ve been spotted for sale for as much as $550,000.

Despite the price tag, the Dodge Demon has an issue that causes its paint to rub off in certain areas, the plaintiffs allege.

They say a large hood scoop — a raised component on race cars that allows air to reach the engine — has a ring of metal on it called a bezel that expands and contracts when they are using their car.

The class action alleges that the movement of this bezel is causing paint damage in the area.

The plaintiffs say FCA knew about the issue, because they released a notice calling for a smaller bezel to be used in place of the factory-issued one prior to the class action being filed.

However, owners say this is not a satisfactory fix, because it turns the car into a different product than was advertised.

The plaintiffs also say FCA has denied them warranty payments to fix the paint damage, leaving them paying out-of-pocket at the dealership for expensive repairs.

Over the years, FCA has faced criticism from consumers, with a range of lawsuits and class action lawsuits resulting from allegations regarding its operations. Allegations have ranged from claims that the vehicles are defective, claims of the company not honoring lifetime warranties, claims of excessive oil use, and more.
