A New Jersey man claims that his $76,918.36 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV fails to start and has other problems due to defects in its electrical system and 48-volt batteries, in a class action lawsuit.

Lead plaintiff, Gerald Scattaglia, Jr., originally filed the nationwide class action lawsuit in the Superior Court of New Jersey in May. The lawsuit has since been removed to federal court and claims that Mercedes-Benz knew about the electrical and battery defects with its late-model GLE 450 SUV, but has failed to address them, forcing owners to pay for repairs.

Scattaglia says that he spent nearly $77,000 purchasing the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV in October of last year. Since then, the vehicle has spent 47 days at the dealership for repairs the plaintiff claims are due to defects in its electrical system.

The plaintiff’s Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV allegedly fails to start. In addition, the plaintiff says that the dashboard malfunctions as it is rebooted and restarted due to defects in the electrical system and battery.

Scattaglia says that his Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 SUV is not the only vehicle experiencing problems. The class action lawsuit points to four technical service bulletins issued by the automaker about the vehicle’s electrical problems. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz has issued additional bulletins related to battery problems in the GLE 450 SUV, alleges the plaintiff.

The plaintiff wants to represent other New Jersey consumers who purchased a 2021 or later Mercedez-Benz GLE 450 SUV. He wants the automaker to be held financially responsible for the repairs to his and other Class Members’ vehicles, as well as the lost value they suffered due to the alleged defects.

In response to the class action lawsuit, the carmaker has pointed out that Scattaglia has not claimed that he was forced to pay for any of the repairs to his Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, reports Car Complaints

I got 2022 GLE450 on Dec. 2021. I couldn’t start engine, so I SOSed in the car, and they said they would send a repair team in next 30 minutes. But I restarted couple of minutes later, it worked. And I experienced malfuction (48v battery) during driving. Car didn’t move properly -something like very weak feeling- could barely move to the sideway. So I turned it off and waited several hours. It started well and I could drive normally. So I’m thinking now if I should go to service. I knew they would say loaner won’t be available during next 3 weeks … all booked…something like this. It’s been working as normal, but I should go to dealer for test & repair eventually before same things happen

I have a 2013 GL 450. Tons of battery, starter problems and not holding cylinder pressure. I have wasted so much money in repairs thinking this will be the last issue, it never is the last. This vehicle should be able to get so many more miles then what we are getting with so many repair bills. Please make this a class action lawsuit.

      I’m in Minnesota!

Currently have my 2021 GLE at the dealership AGAIN with the battery issue. Car stalled at intersections a few times while on autostart. Removed autostart & got a couple days of that happening. Then stalled again with the engine light coming on immediately. Sensors faultering, seat settings getting deleted, engine feeling sluggish, you name it.

April 2021-delivery of GLE 450. Total failure IN my garage Jan 22. Tow-truck drivers mystified on how to extract to tow, since it’s “locked” in P and the emergency brake automatically engaged. BUT, there is a secret to getting it into N even with the dead battery. 48v Battery replaced.

July ‘22 -48v failure light comes on again, car starts to overheat IMMEDIATELY, engine power goes to near zero. Did manage to pull out of intersection. Parked, let it cool off. Then it mysteriously cranked and I drove it to the dealer 15 miles up the road. Shop🗣”you need to drive it further and longer.”

  5. Sam Santos says:

2021 GLE 450 – dido, same issues, every 3-4 months the car refuses to start, as soon as the tow truck driver saw it he said, “it is not going to start, I see this car all the time!!” less than 7000 miles on it, my last MB after 20 years. Bought it because very few cars have an inline 6. When they finally decided to do a recall, will we get all of our original moneys back??

  6. Perry Marshall says:

I have had my 2021 GLE 450 48 v battery malfunction twice. It is at the dealership as we speak again for this issue. Chicagoland area

  7. Virginia Falkinburg says:

Have the car since June 2021
I have the same problem with my 2021 GLS 450, car died and diagnosis is the 48 v battery. Reading other comments, now I’m
going to be afraid to drive it.

  8. Ed K says:

The battery warning came on yesterday. Car is stuck in the garage. MB sent two flatbed trucks that could not figure out how to get the car out of the garage. Waiting for a specific tow truck now. MB dealer has no loaner. Renting a car later today.

  9. Rodney Thomas says:

My 2019 CLS 450 is headed back to the dealer for a defective 12 Volt starter battery. The battery simply hold/accept a charge.

  10. Alex Sassenberg says:

Yeah bought our GLS December 2021 and the week after we purchased it it was towed back for the same issue with the battery.
