Refrigerator repair manConsumers are still finding themselves disappointed with the performance of their LG refrigerators due to an alleged cooling defect.

The refrigerators in question are reportedly equipped with a linear compressor which is responsible for the cooling of the appliance. These components cool refrigerators by cooling refrigerant gas which in turn increases pressure and temperature until the refrigerant gas turns into a liquid. Once the refrigerant is converted into a liquid, it is passed through coils where it absorbs heat from the fridge – creating a cool environment.

A defect with the LG refrigerator linear compressor reportedly causes the appliances to fail. This allegedly causes food within the refrigerator to spoil. In some cases, the affected refrigerators allegedly fail within a few years of purchasing the appliances despite LG representations that their refrigerators can last up to 20 years.

Consumers claim that the issue is causing their refrigerators to fail and that LG’s response has been lackluster. One consumer wrote a review on Consumer Affairs, claiming that the experienced repairman was unsure that repairs as drastic as rewiring the whole fridge would fix the issue. This was reportedly after the consumer was forced to pay for a part that did not work with the model as well as repair labor.

One customer asked, “How long before LG is proactive with correcting the problem, and at what cost to us in terms of no cold storage?”

Although one settlement has been reached regarding another LG refrigerator cooling defect, consumer dissatisfaction has prompted new legal action against the appliance maker.

In April 2019, several plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against LG. The consumers argue that LG did not disclose that their appliances were prone to defects and instead portrayed their refrigerators as effective and capable of lasting up to 20 years.

“Although refrigerators last 13 years on average, the LG Refrigerators have been failing en masse within 36 months,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claims.

Purchasers allegedly rely on LG representations when shopping for appliances. The plaintiffs argue that they would not have purchased LG refrigerators or paid what they did if they had known about the issues that allegedly cause failure of the appliance.

According to the class action lawsuit, the consumers demand that LG takes steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

Despite consumer outrage about LG refrigerators and cooling issues, LG reportedly stands by their products and maintains that they will repair any appliance under warranty.

“At LG, customer satisfaction is paramount. LG home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” an LG spokesperson told Digital Trends.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Carol Johnson says:

I too have a LG refrigerator that the compressor went. I purchased it 11/17 and it died 7/21. Still waiting for repairs one month later. Lucky for us we were given a loaner fridge that’s sitting in our garage. Which is an incovience, since our garage is not attached to our house. Just wondering how long will it take…will this fix it…for how long? What really makes me mad is that this isn’t the brand I wanted to buy in the first place and the salesman talked me into this one. Next time I am going with my own intuitions. What good does that do for me now. I too will stay away from LG products.

Plead to all at large…plz..plz do not purchase LG products. Worst products of LG. Having fridge and washing machine. Sever problem with the product. Worst part is Pathetic service and incompetent staff who are unable to detect the problems. Parts are just not available. Having THINQ refrigerator coating 50K what a pathetic product.

We bought a LG ThinQ refrigerator in March 2022. Within 2 weeks I started getting sick, horrible headaches, muscle weakness, swollen abdomen, vision changes. I noticed our vegetables were rotting within a few days of purchasing them. April arrives and I am so I’ll that I can no longer think clearly. My muscles have atrophied, I can no longer walk the dogs. Our refrigerator door panel states the temperature as 0 for the freezer and 37 for the refrigerator. The unit runs constantly. The meat in the freezer looks odd to me. This goes on until June. I put thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer. I’m horrified, the refrigerator is 56 degrees and the freezer is 6 degrees. Call LG for service. He comes out and says the compressor is bad, he has to order one. It might be a week. 1 week turns into more. Finally is here to fix it and finds factory defects in all the copper tubing. He replaces what he could and orders additional parts to fix it properly. He is supposed to be back on Monday. So I have been suffering with food poisoning for 4 months, to which my body might not ever recover from. I don’t think I will ever trust this refrigerator.

Bought LG refrigerator 5-17-2021. Quit cooling yesterday 7-11-2022. Friends were warning me (after I bought) that they had repair person out 7 different times and their LG is still not working. Now they are telling me…told you so.

  5. Taylor says:

One more LG compressor failed— we bought our Kenmore Elite in 2015 not knowing it was made by LG, and it has this same problem of only cooling properly for a few years, then it stops working correctly. We had it repaired in 2019, only to have it fail the very same way again in 2022. This is the first I have heard about the class action lawsuit, what is the status?

    1. Al Rosen says:

I have a Kenmore elite the thermostats wentAnd now I believe the motherboard wentRefrigerator is about five years old

  6. Mercella Bryan says:

Please add me to the suit. This is a waste of my hard earned money. The 1st time the cooling problem began and I report it to the supplier I had to pay for the part and the technician and now I realize that it was not my fault but an issue with the brand.

  7. Tiffany Coffey says:

Exact same situation as noted repeatedly above with LG french door fridge, the smart thinQ one. Cooled for 4-5 weeks at a time before slowly getting warm and wasting all the food. Too slow to notice in time to hurry and use everything. Grr. Had LG specialist repair so often that I just texted him directly to let him know it crapped out again and to expect a service ticket. He replaced basically everything there is to replace before proclaiming it a loss. Ridiculous. This was a NEW REFRIGERATOR. LG offered to refund my purchase price (which was bought at a discount and refund would therefore not be enough to replace the fridge). Proper disposal of the lemon is up to me.
tldr: nightmare, don’t do it. Bought a Frigidaire.

    1. Natasha says:

I have literally been on speaking with them for 3 months to resolve my broken fridge issue as well here in Australia and every time had to go through the phillipines customer service line which was useless! Their remedy was the same, a pro rata refund and I needed to get rid of the broken fridge by myself. Absolutely appalling having the case manager tell me he will not be escalating my concerns about the refund amount to his manager and that I can take it or leave it. I will never touch another LG appliance it’s the worst customer service I have ever seen.

      1. Joseph Murphy says:

Take your refrigerator back to Home Depot. And leave in the store. Home Depot does not stand by anything with a 💩. The people they have as installers do 💩 jobs and Home Depot just says call this number. It’s a joke here in the States.

    2. Vicki says:

My compressor also went out today. I bought my home and the ref was only l yr old…so I felt great about it….then today it went out,,,,had it diagnosed. It is only 3 yrs old..

      Very disappointed…

Ps same thing w my dishwasher…the lock on the door is broken..also 3 years old.

Will never buy this brand. Will share my disappointments too.

  8. Brad Sweatt says:

Yes, please add me to the list!

  9. Leena Elmays says:

Please add me to list to be part of lawsuit. We purchased our new home 11-2021 and had a 9-2017 LG fridge come with it. The compressor went out and all food spoiled on 12-30-2021 and still waiting to get it fixed. You can only imagine with a family of five how we are dealing with stress and expenses of going to supermarket everyday!! Please contact us

  10. Tina Mixen says:
