Refrigerator repair manConsumers are still finding themselves disappointed with the performance of their LG refrigerators due to an alleged cooling defect.

The refrigerators in question are reportedly equipped with a linear compressor which is responsible for the cooling of the appliance. These components cool refrigerators by cooling refrigerant gas which in turn increases pressure and temperature until the refrigerant gas turns into a liquid. Once the refrigerant is converted into a liquid, it is passed through coils where it absorbs heat from the fridge – creating a cool environment.

A defect with the LG refrigerator linear compressor reportedly causes the appliances to fail. This allegedly causes food within the refrigerator to spoil. In some cases, the affected refrigerators allegedly fail within a few years of purchasing the appliances despite LG representations that their refrigerators can last up to 20 years.

Consumers claim that the issue is causing their refrigerators to fail and that LG’s response has been lackluster. One consumer wrote a review on Consumer Affairs, claiming that the experienced repairman was unsure that repairs as drastic as rewiring the whole fridge would fix the issue. This was reportedly after the consumer was forced to pay for a part that did not work with the model as well as repair labor.

One customer asked, “How long before LG is proactive with correcting the problem, and at what cost to us in terms of no cold storage?”

Although one settlement has been reached regarding another LG refrigerator cooling defect, consumer dissatisfaction has prompted new legal action against the appliance maker.

In April 2019, several plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against LG. The consumers argue that LG did not disclose that their appliances were prone to defects and instead portrayed their refrigerators as effective and capable of lasting up to 20 years.

“Although refrigerators last 13 years on average, the LG Refrigerators have been failing en masse within 36 months,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claims.

Purchasers allegedly rely on LG representations when shopping for appliances. The plaintiffs argue that they would not have purchased LG refrigerators or paid what they did if they had known about the issues that allegedly cause failure of the appliance.

According to the class action lawsuit, the consumers demand that LG takes steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

Despite consumer outrage about LG refrigerators and cooling issues, LG reportedly stands by their products and maintains that they will repair any appliance under warranty.

“At LG, customer satisfaction is paramount. LG home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” an LG spokesperson told Digital Trends.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Robert Jennings says:

There are many dissatisfied LG buyers because of obvious engineering defects. Has LG addressed the flaws and remedied them or are they still problems? Thanks.

  2. BINIAM HABTOM says:

I purchased LG ThinQ refrigerator in February 2021. I start having problem in August. LG tech came out and replaced compressor, circuit board and in his third visit, he cleaned the refrigerant tube because LG Engineer told the tech that there is restriction in the line. After three visits, LG admitted that they can’t repair the refrigerator and offered refund. As you can imagine, the is took long time and I had to purchase small refrigerator & LG doesn’t want to reimburse me for the refrigerator and wasted food. It was too much to handle and LG shouldn’t produce more refrigerator until they figure out the issue with their compressor technology. Do yourself a favor and avoid headaches and spending several hours dealing with their customer service.

Bought an LG 3 door Frig. It went out 2 times, AHS sent someone out to repair it. Lasted about 2 mos. and went out again, had to wait almost 2 mos. during Thanksgiving and Christmas without a frig. Bought a little frig. for us to use. Finally bought a new Frig. at Sears. Got the Kenmore Elite. It went out in less than 6 mos. Had it fixed again. So far So Good. But we lost alot of food that wasn’t insured. I don’t put alot in the freezer anymore, because found out LG makes Kenmore Elite and I don’t want to loose all our food again. Bought a little freezer to put out frozen food in from now on. Hope LG cares enough of the people that purchase their products, that they help recoup some of out loses in time, food and service calls.

There alot to maintain with these high tech refrigerator read the manual first.

Bought kenmore smart refrigerator in june 2018, compressor quit 2 days ago. No sound from it at all. Spoiled food all in the garbage.

  6. Susan Healey says:

Since LG Refrigerators are garbage can I ask what refrigerators did you purchase that is working for you. We have a very old Kenmore that is 17 years old and ready to go on us any day. What, in your opinion, is the best refrigerator to purchase or what have you bought in replacement of your bad LG refrigerators so we don’t make this same headache of a mistake? Please will someone respond to me.

    1. Gary Walker says:

I’ve had a Westinghouse for 23 years and still no signs of giving up on me.
Not one call out for repair of any kind either and this frig has not had an easy life.
      I’m Very Impressed…….Gary

  7. Joan DiJohn says:

Ditto to all of the above comments. Nothing but problems with our French Door LG refrigerator. Something needs to be done.

  8. Tammy says:

I bought my Kenmore Frig with LG compressor in 10/2018. But I have American Home Shield for all my appliances and when I read all the information about the problems, I thought whew, I bought American Home Shield and so I should be taken care of. Well I am not. I am on my second repair company coming out to look at the unit to tell me its the compressor and needs to be replaced. I am fighting with American Home shield as to replace the refrigerator instead of repairing it. The first Vendor told me to call LG and get my compressor for free and then install myself. What a laugh, even the repair people don’t want to touch these. I have paid my deductible and don’t want to stay with any LG product. I am 2 weeks into no refrigerator and just about ready to just buy another one even if its just a little one to store the basics. Additionally, I have been told that due to COVID, appliances are harder to get as well. How are we suppose to live without a basic appliance? this is why everyone is going crazy. Good luck to you all, try and not stress out to bad.

    1. Sue H. says:

Tammy….your first mistake was to purchase American Home Shield. Do not…..I repeat Do Not renew your contract with them when it comes due. I can assure you from our experiences with them you will be much better off if you just fix or replace items as needed rather then pay American Home Shield $800 a year for absolutely no satisfaction. They will fix minor appliances like your washer and dryer or stove but when it comes to the big ticket items like your refrigerator, air conditioner or hot water heater they will screw you over big time. I had to report them to the Better Business Bureau because it was so bad. We went through the hottest part of Summer 2 years ago and again last Summer for the same problem and they still would not replace our air conditioner. We spent so much money paying them yearly and paying repair costs over and above what we paid them that over time we could have had a new air conditioner if we would have just replaced it ourselves to begin with. Don’t fall prey to their tactics. Get out now as soon as you can. Many people have been taken by them.

      1. Julie says:

I don’t have American Home Shield but a friend does. She has not AC since mid June today is Sept 9

      2. Kate says:

        Who do you recommend?

        1. Dave says:

None of them. Home Warranties are basically a scam.

    2. SHARON AUGUST says:

I FEEL YOUR PAIN I LOST ALL MY FOOD ON 11/17/21IT GOT REPAIERD ON 11/23/21. GOT NEW FOOD FOR THANKSGIVING AND LOST THAT ON 11/25/21. IT GOT REPAIRED AGIN ON 11/26/21. I HAD BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! BIG JOKE!

      1. Holly Fulgham says:

We’ve had a similar situation, although not as bad. We lost over $400 in food & then had to spend $ for takeout until it was fixed. LG offered $100. We did not accept. We just got a response back saying “After speaking with the supervisor, as a courtesy they will offer $200 but that is the final offer.” We purchased it a year ago & it was manufactured in 1/2019! We also bought the extended warranty. Were you able to get reimbursed for any of the food that was lost?

  9. Michael Meixner says:

My wife and I purchased a Kenmore Elite model 51867 from a local Sears store on 10/10/2017. Last week on 07/05/2021 our refrigerator decided to stop cooling and just so happened the day after spending over $400 in groceries for our family. We contacted Sears only to find out that the $399 we spent on the Sears Protection Plan expired on 10/10/2020 and was told there was nothing they could do for us. When we mentioned that our manufacture warranty stated that there was a ten year warranty on the “cooling system” we were told that “there are no repairman in our area that could service this model” and we basically felt the service rep just trying to get us off the phone and offering us no help in getting our problem rectified. After talking with Sears my wife started calling around to appliance repair company’s in our area only to find out that not only is our refrigerator an LG model (which I was shocked to find out as the salesperson that sold it to us told us that it was manufactured by Fridgidaire….if I had known it was an LG I never would have purchased) , but every repair company stated the same thing “we don’t service that model and the compressors is most likely the issue as they are junk”. After spending hours trying to find a repairman we finally found one that was willing to come out and take a look at our unit. While waiting for the repairman I went online and was astonished by the number of complaints about these refrigerators in regards to LG and the compressors as well as the lawsuits that have been filed….why is this not a recall as both Sears and LG are well aware of this issue?? The following day the repairman comes out and verified that the issue is indeed the compressor and stated that he sees these LG units with bad compressors almost on a daily basis. The repair was going to cost $1000, but here is the kicker….my repairman stated that if I spend the money, first the compressor and condenser would be replaced with the same faulty components as LG has never redesigned them and second that we would more than likely have the same issue in another 3-5 years and third the parts would take months, that’s right I said MONTHS to get. We are a family of five and cannot wait weeks let alone months for our refrigerator to get repaired. So we paid the $100 for our service call and called Sears back about the “10 year warranty” on the compressor and was once again basically told that we are on our own. Listen, I understand that Sears has been closing stores and is probably not going to be around much longer but this shouldn’t give them the right to just “ blow customers off” and wash their hands of a problem they know exists. Sears or LG should be held accountable for this problem as the average refrigerator should last 12-14 years, not 3 years. So, after much time spent on the phone, all of the aggravation and a large family that needs a refrigerator now, we decided to go out and buy a new one. Definitely will never buy a Kenmore product again, ever. After spending over $2200 on this unit just over 3 years ago, over $400 in food spoiled, $100 for service call and countless hours on the phone we are completely dissatisfied and thoroughly disgusted with this whole outcome. We feel that our family was sold a refrigerator with Sears having previous knowledge that these units have faulty/defective parts as there are cases dating back to the mid 2000’s which is in my eyes is deceptive and illegal to say the least and they should be held responsible. My family doesn’t have the money to go out and purchase a new refrigerator every 3-4 years let alone the $400 for the groceries that have spoiled and the time/aggravation that Sears has caused us. Please email me back and let me know how I can get involved in this lawsuit as we are a busy household and well frankly my family doesn’t have the money and time to hire a lawyer as I feel we were sold a refrigerator under deceptive practices. Contact me as I am willing to talk on the phone and give whatever information I can to help as I feel the consumers should be reimbursed and both Sears and LG should be held accountable.

    1. Susan Healey says:

May I ask what refrigerator you ended up purchasing after the disaster with Kenmore/LG? We are basically in that same situation now where our old Kenmore for about 17 years and its on its last leg. We were hoping to get a French door refrigerator.

      1. Michael Meixner says:

We purchase a Frigidaire Gallery Series and so far we are extremely happy with it.

  10. Neeraj says:

Moved to a new place with the previous owner having bought LG double door fridge in 2017-18. Cooling went bad while the fridge was ON. Everything spoiled inside the fridge. Had to pay roughly 300 bucks for a flat service charge and still waiting (10+ days) for the compressor to be replaced. Never purchasing LG ever….I have had fridges that lasted 20 years with no issues…LG is just a piece of garbage..
