Refrigerator repair manConsumers are still finding themselves disappointed with the performance of their LG refrigerators due to an alleged cooling defect.

The refrigerators in question are reportedly equipped with a linear compressor which is responsible for the cooling of the appliance. These components cool refrigerators by cooling refrigerant gas which in turn increases pressure and temperature until the refrigerant gas turns into a liquid. Once the refrigerant is converted into a liquid, it is passed through coils where it absorbs heat from the fridge – creating a cool environment.

A defect with the LG refrigerator linear compressor reportedly causes the appliances to fail. This allegedly causes food within the refrigerator to spoil. In some cases, the affected refrigerators allegedly fail within a few years of purchasing the appliances despite LG representations that their refrigerators can last up to 20 years.

Consumers claim that the issue is causing their refrigerators to fail and that LG’s response has been lackluster. One consumer wrote a review on Consumer Affairs, claiming that the experienced repairman was unsure that repairs as drastic as rewiring the whole fridge would fix the issue. This was reportedly after the consumer was forced to pay for a part that did not work with the model as well as repair labor.

One customer asked, “How long before LG is proactive with correcting the problem, and at what cost to us in terms of no cold storage?”

Although one settlement has been reached regarding another LG refrigerator cooling defect, consumer dissatisfaction has prompted new legal action against the appliance maker.

In April 2019, several plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit against LG. The consumers argue that LG did not disclose that their appliances were prone to defects and instead portrayed their refrigerators as effective and capable of lasting up to 20 years.

“Although refrigerators last 13 years on average, the LG Refrigerators have been failing en masse within 36 months,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claims.

Purchasers allegedly rely on LG representations when shopping for appliances. The plaintiffs argue that they would not have purchased LG refrigerators or paid what they did if they had known about the issues that allegedly cause failure of the appliance.

According to the class action lawsuit, the consumers demand that LG takes steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

Despite consumer outrage about LG refrigerators and cooling issues, LG reportedly stands by their products and maintains that they will repair any appliance under warranty.

“At LG, customer satisfaction is paramount. LG home appliances are enjoyed by millions of Americans every day, and we’re proud that our products are recognized by industry experts for their reliability and that LG has been awarded more JD Power Awards for customer satisfaction than any other appliance manufacturer,” an LG spokesperson told Digital Trends.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I agree with all comments above. LG French door refrigerators are garbage. If you are in the market for appliances, stay away from LG. Compressor went out after 2 years. After a new compressor that we pay out of pocket plus installation fee out of our pocket as well, the fridge is still not cooling below 40 degree. Very very frustrated. Food does not last very long. Most items less than a week they have gone bad. Very disappointed in my purchase.

I’m all for another class action suit against LG and their French Door refrigerators that quit cooling far too soon. Mine is only 4 years old. I replaced a 23 year old Frigidaire double door refrigerator that was still working And cooling as it should with this piece of crap they marketed with a great warranty and a great new linear compressor to keep it cool.
I liked the look of it and just wanted to upgrade my appliances so bought all new LG washer, dryer, oven and refrigerator. Spent a lot of money on them so they better repair and reimburse me for their failure on the cooling system with the refrigerator.

I’ve got a side-by-side LG refrigerator piece of junk that I’ve had ‘repaired’ twice in three weeks, and am waiting to hear back on my 3rd service call. I’m already in $375 on repairs. It’s a great looking stainless steel oversized paperweight right now!!!! BTW…My LG fridge is 5 1/2 years old. My old Whirlpool lasted over 25 years. LG needs to take care of customers that have been ripped off by their sub-par products. So much for their TV & other appliance/electronic sales from me!

      2. Richard De Filippo says:

I purchased a $4,000 LG refrigerator which was on back order 5 months! I received it late December 2020 and July 6th the compressor failed – LESS THAN 7 MONTHS! I’ve called LG 6 times as they never call back and have had two “technicians” and I use that term loosely, come out and tell me the compressor failed. NOTE: AS with the original class action suit first my ice maker stopped working and then the entire refrigerator – Same exact symptoms of the last class action suit – LG fixed nothing ! It is now 6-weeks without a refrigerator and no end in sight. I twice demanded that LG replace the refrigerator and was advised LG policy is to have three technicians attempt repair. What am I to do without a refrigerator for two or more months they had no reply. I demanded someone further up the “BS EXCUSE” chain contact me, I was advised I would get a call back within 2 working days, never has occurred. Like all of you I will never buy an LG product again and will go out of my way to advise others not to. The LG defense I read that LG has received more consumer awards than any other company has to be BS. LG must have a team of fake consumers sending in 5-Stars. If anyone hears of a second class action suit please pass along a link to all of us.

      U R RIGHT 100% SAME PROBLEM ME

    3. Dave says:

I purchased the LG from Home Depot as a floor model. Perfect condition and at that time, these boat anchors were around $4k. So I saved a decent amount, could not have made a worse decision.

The LG didn’t work from jump.
Called the service for LG, 5 year warranty.
The idiots came out four times, first with nothing.
      Second, wrong compressor.
Third, installed new compressor which worked for about 4 days and died.
Fourth time deer in the headlights

      From jump it was

  2. Diane Kunz says:

Lg does suck!!! We bought the big French door refrigerator in July 2013 and now it quit working. No ice, everything in the freezer was ruined. We had a lot of good stuff in the freezer, a lot of meat. Never again an LG!!! Will tell everyone I know about it!!!!

    1. Charene Hastings says:

Same thing happened to me this week! 2013 $3,500 FRENCH DOOR WITH THE OUTSIDE 2ND REFRESHNENT DOOR! ICE MAKER QUIT FIRST, ICE MELTING THEN JUST STOPED MAKING ICE. ON MONDAY MY COMPRESSOR BLEW. $1,255.00
TO REPLACE THE MOTHER BOARD & NEW COMPRESSOR! LG IS SAVING MILLIONS WITH THE “DISMISSAL OF THE CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST THEM!!!????????

  3. Kevin says:

Our LG refrigerator, purchased new from Lowe’s in December 2018 (we bought a house that had all appliances except refrigerator) and thought we had something good, after all, both Lowe’s and Home Depot were literally covered up with Lg garbage. Well now it’s June of 2021, the LG ( literally garbage) refrigerator has completely failed, and even a repairman was unable to revive it. Probably 90%, or HUNDREDS of dollars worth of food in the fridge and freezer lost. Unacceptable. We will NEVER, EVER, even consider anything by lg again. If it says lg (or Samsung) forget it. As far as I am concerned, these are the worst brands on the planet. I would buy a Yugoslav before I would EVER EVEN CONSIDER anything from these two scumbag companies ( my repairman told me that Samsung is right in line with LG in terms of product failure).

  4. Paul S. says:

I read many people have the same LG refrigerator issue with a failed compressor and one LG class action lawsuit was settled for this issue last year. Since these problems persist (we have been having this issue with our $3,000 fridge now, making one call after another to the LG service center with no response) isn’t time to file another class action lawsuit against LG due to their unwillingness to fix this issue or compensate their appliance owners for their units still under warranty?

    1. Rick says:

Does anyone know whether the problems were limited to models released between ’17 and ’19, or are all the newer fridges affected?

      1. Daniel says:

I’d say not. Ours just quit yesterday less than 6 months old

    2. Rodney DeCormier says:

My fridge just died. I guess I’m lucky, it lasted 5 yrs.?
I feel like there is no recourse for compensation.

      1. Becky says:

We purchased an LG fridge in 2015. It just died two days ago. First the freezer went and then the actual refrigerator. Unbelievable. And the deadline to file a claim was Jan 11, 2021? Are you kidding me. We need to start another lawsuit. A refrigerator should last longer than 5 years. LG products suck! And I will never buy another LG product again.

        1. JJ says:

Same for me…I just posted a reply to another post before reading all these others. Your timeline corresponds exactly like mine. Life’s Good???? Not for your customers!!!!!

    3. Kathy Chiwah says:

Yes – count me in for joining another class action lawsuit. We bought our $3000 LG french door/4 door refrigerator in Jan 2019, and the compressor already failed (October 2021). Unfortunately, our model was made just after the original lawsuit, so it is not included in the settlement. I am livid that LG continues to sell refrigerators with these failing compressors! They continue to fail, and LG has horrible customer service. We have been without a refrigerator for 12 days, and have been told we have to wait another 11 days before a technician will even come out.

Additionally, in all of my phone calls with LG, I have learned that they hardly reimburse for food spoilage and other expenses related to not having a working refrigerator. The maximum food spoilage reimbursement is a measly $250, and there is no compensation for the lengthy wait time before repair.

Clearly, LG continues to have the same problems that were addressed in the original lawsuit. How do we go about initiating or joining a current civil lawsuit?

      1. Marlene Blaauwendraat says:

I’m from Canada and we purchased 3 LG bundle appliances in 2018. Had an issue with the dishwaser in the first 3 months. Extremely difficult to deal with LG reps. did not make a claim paid for it ourselves. NOW the compressor is gone in the fridge. I am so frustrated with the customer service but they don’t care I’m from Canada. AND IT’S CHRISTMAS. I am shit out of luck with any law suit.

  5. Mike Moore says:

    LG Refrigerator is garbage.

  6. David B Morey says:

Purchased 11/2017. Compressor has always been noisy … had a service guy out to look at it ($200) but he said nothing could be done. “It’s a design flaw.” Now it has stopped cooling. Class action suit newly extended warranty does not include my model. LG. You suck.

  7. Lucy says:

I purchased LG fridge 4 doors and for my model there is lawsuits. But it’s too late to submit a claim. I don’t know what to do now.

  8. Mike thomas says:

Been calling to get my 2017 lp fridge fixed so many problems to get help now they tell me will take 2 plus weeks for guy to come out to fix need a specialist already been a week the extended warranty we paid 450 for expires 5/5 2021 but they say we have to use the lp warranty good for 5 years so our extended warranty is nothing what a rip off and we bought it thru Lp company I can’t wait another 2 weeks for a repair person to say hey need to find the part so frustrated

  9. Dale Boggs says:

Yes I to have a LG Refrigerator.freezer just stopped working I paid $2000. For the crap and I’m not happy even bought the extended warranty and wouldn’t you know it it ran about 3 months ago it really is sad that people pay good money for a product and buy the extended warranty for at least 3 years and they still have to pay again sometimes I wish I could take it back to the manufacturer and throw it on the line and say shove it.

  10. Rodney Graham says:

Bought a LG Lfx, $3000.00 pain in the —. 12/06/18. On 12/18/2020 the fridge stopped cooling, took all food out and let it defrost for 8 hrs. Worked good for 5 weeks, pulled the same er code. Now I see a class action against LG. Looks like I have to keep my food out side until it warms up. And we just paid the thing off, how ironic.
