  • Where: The LG refrigerator class action was filed in New Jersey federal court.

LG knowingly sells refrigerators with defective “craft ice” makers that cease to operate within months of use, according to a new class action lawsuit.

Plaintiffs David Heckner, Andrea Heckner and Robin Bardsley filed the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit Nov. 15 in New Jersey federal court.

They claim they purchased refrigerators equipped with the LG craft ice maker based on the brand’s perceived quality and because they specifically wanted the ability to make slow-melting round ice.

The Heckners say they paid more than $4,000 for their LG refrigerator. Bardsley says she paid $3,300 for hers. Both say they were willing to pay a premium for the appliance because no competitors offered the LG craft ice maker.

The plaintiffs allege the LG craft ice maker failed within months of use. Specifically, they claim the LG refrigerator stopped generating craft ice in either the three-round or six-round setting and leaked water into the freezer compartment.

Plaintiffs say they faced out-of-pocket costs despite LG craft ice maker warranty

The Heckners were able to obtain one warranty repair, and a licensed technician replaced the LG craft ice maker. However, the class action claims the defect occurred again, but LG refused to repair it because the refrigerator was no longer under warranty.

When Bardsley’s LG refrigerator experienced the alleged defect during the warranty period, she says she was instructed to schedule a service appointment and would be charged $100.

Due to the out-of-pocket costs associated with the repair, the plaintiffs say they no longer use the LG craft ice maker and have been deprived of the benefit of their bargain with LG.

LG knew or should have known about the ice maker defect before it sold the refrigerators to the plaintiffs but failed to inform consumers about the LG craft ice maker defect, the plaintiffs allege. They also allege that LG knew that its warranty repairs would not fix the issue.

The LG refrigerator class action lawsuit asserts claims for breach of warranty, common law fraud, unjust enrichment and violations of the Minnesota Uniform Deceptive Practices Act.

LG reportedly paid consumers up to $1,150 as part of a refrigerator cooling defect class action settlement
