Woman opening LG refrigeratorA class action lawsuit claims that a defect in LG refrigerators’ compressors causes the appliances not to function.

According to the LG class action lawsuit, this defect causes LG refrigerators to fail within a few years.

Plaintiffs Gary Sosenko, Diane Terry, and Michael Burrage say they purchased refrigerators from LG that are equipped with linear compressors, and paid between $1,400 and $7,000.

Allegedly, the refrigerators possess a defect in their linear compressor, the central component responsible for cooling.

The customers say that the manufacturer actively represented the refrigerators as long-lasting and effective, and did not disclose the defect.

The LG refrigerator class action states that each consumer made the choice to purchase their LG fridge over other models because they reviewed information provided by the company about the product.

The refrigerator owners say they didn’t see any disclosure about the defect, nor were they told that the refrigerators are prone to compressor failure.

According to Sosenko and other the plaintiffs, they spent significant time and money trying to fix their refrigerators, and in some cases, their food spoiled and they went without a working refrigerator while their refrigerator was being fixed.

The consumers claim that they were financially injured by the defect because had they known that the fridges were prone to failure, they would not have purchased them or would not have paid as much for them.

Additionally, the LG refrigerator class action claims that the plaintiffs were injured because they were forced to pay for repairs, had to pay for spoiled food, and went without a refrigerator.

According to Burrage, he contacted a repair person like the other consumers, and was explicitly told that the compressor should not have failed so quickly, and should have lasted at least 10 years before failing, instead of lasting only a few years as it had in his case.

The LG refrigerator class action lawsuit notes that the National Association of Home Builders established that the average lifespan of a refrigerator is approximately 13 years, and LG reports that their refrigerators have a 20-year life span.

Sosenko, Terry, and Burrage say they specifically chose to purchase an LG refrigerator over other options because they prefer the features and aesthetics of the refrigerator to those of other refrigerators, and because LG advertises their refrigerators’ high quality and functionality.

However, the consumers claim that these representations are false, and if they encounter another LG refrigerator, they will not purchase it unless the company takes sufficient steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

According to the LG fridge class action lawsuit, LG uses a different kind of compressor than most refrigerators and advertises the benefit of their compressor.

Allegedly, these compressors possess a more efficient mechanism that is “up to 25 percent quieter” than traditional compressors and possesses other attractive attributes. However, these compressors are reportedly more prone to failure than other compressors.

The LG refrigerator class action states that LG knew or should have known that the compressors fail prematurely but did not take sufficient action to correct the problem.

To support their claim that the company was aware of the defect, the plaintiffs note that many consumers have complained about the defect and that news stations reported on it.

The LG refrigerator owners are represented by Daniel C. Girard, Jordan Elias, Adam E. Polk, and Simon S. Grille of Girard Sharp LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Gary Sosenko, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Purchased LG refrigerator LMXC2379d/00 Feb 2,2018. Quit cooling March 27,2023. . I have spent 2 days talking with customer service. No results as of yet. Purchased on idea from advertising the unit was the best available. I’m inclined to believe that this was false advertising

Purchased LG French Door refrigerator Nov 2014 model #LFC227710ST. First, the ice maker went out and flooded kitchen this year (2022), second the refrigerator quit working, 11/23/22, lost all food in refrig and freezer. Believe it is the compressor not working. Contacted LG, the only thing they will do is send compressor to authorized tech, there are no techs close by that will work on LG, closet charges just for labor and trip around $800 or more. Was to have received call back from compensation department (have yet to hear from them) and today found out that they might only cove half the cost of the compressor only. In addition to the above costs, I will be charged for haul off. WILL NEVER BUY AN LG OF ANY KIND AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Tia says:

Sears/AE just left $900 to repair refrigerator that I 3 years old. Freeon leak but Manufacturer requires compressor be replaced if leak repair. Warranty covers compressor and part for leak but not labor. Been without fridge for a month. Had to pay 1/3 today to order parts and they can’t come back to fix before the end of next week. 😠

Bought French door fridge (lpsx30866d) in 2015. Compressor went out in 2020 and we did without fridge for a month, lost food, and had to pay 1,000 dollars. Today I had to call a serviceman since fridge is not cooling. I hate LG fridge

  6. Paul Geiss says:

2 1/2 year old French door model quit cooling. Notified LG they took 5 days to schedule service and on scheduled day no one showed up. Called again and was told the technician canceled the day before. Asked to speak with supervisor and was stonewalled. I finally got very demanding and spoke with Carol. She said we are prioritized, whatever that means. Notified that a service technician was scheduled now for 28 November. I asked if he would have a new compressor and was told it would be a diagnostic visit. I asked how long to fix and then was told many times they’ll have parts with them. Asked about list food compensation and possibly rental and was told no. Later I got a notification that LG would reimburse me $200 for food loss. Not near enough, have they looked at grocery prices lately?!?! Now without a fridge over Thanksgiving with 20 family coming, ouch! Luckily it is cold here now and hopefully we can put stuff outside.
We would have never bought LG if known about this consistent problem and recommend to everyone not to buy an LG fridge of any style!

6 yr old side by by side refrigerator with a drawer freezer. Hade 4 compressors replaced over that six years with no reimbursement for the hundreds of dollars of food that we lost. LG sores I am concerned stands for. Long Gone.. 3 days before repair appointment.

Is this class action suit still in progress? I would like to join. I know one was settled in 2019.

We purchases an LG Refrigerator in 2016. It was exactly what we wanted. We sold our house in 2021 and within a month, the new owners said the refrigerator wasn’t working anymore. That was in Virginia. Our daughter and son-in-law visited from WA in 2017 and loved our LG that they bought the exact same one in 2018 I believe and it stopped working in 2022. Our neighbor bought the same refrigerator and it stopped working within a few years. We bought a new LG, different model in our new home in 2019 and it just stopped working. So let me tell you, I have never seen or heard anything like this before and a company getting away with it. My husband and I are in touch with LG customer service about our latest one that just stopped working, and we are getting messages already, “3 more days” so we went refrigerator (and microwave) shopping yesterday and passed everything LG. We will NEVER buy anything LG again unless they admit to their failure and fix it. Our daughter who had 4 young children, went rounds with LG for over 8 months while using an old used refrigerator they got for their garage. They recently FINALLY gave up and switched the refrigerators so the family doesn’t have to go out into the garage anymore. Our friends were so upset when their fridge stopped working as it was filled with breast milk that went bad. How does a big company get away with the damage they have caused to families, not to mention the financial burden and still are not only in business, but still sell their faulty appliance?

  8. Rita says:

We have LG fridge raider Lsxs22423s
    Icemaker stopped working
When I remove the food out from the freezer, I noticed that there was a block of ice buildup behind the food. When I remove the food completely I noticed that there is a plastic all the way on the bottom that is melted and curved.
While the Ice start melting, I started hearing a sound of water, hitting a source of heat
Not sure what to make of it, but it’s pretty nerving to hear the sound of burning water in a freezer.

  9. Feng Zhou says:

I also bought mine (LFC2277OST) in 2017. Refrigerator is still running but no cooling at all. Have someone checked, the condenser coil is in room temperature and compressor is not working. Very disappointed customer here. My previous other brand refrigerator has lasted more than 25 years. This one only 5 years!

  10. Diane Houser says:

Bought mine in 2017. Compressor also died. This week.

    1. Lascelles Geddes says:

Same here, bought in 2017 and died 10/23/2022, had just stocked the fridge and threw out about $400 worth of food! Very frustrated!

      1. Ann Bankson says:

We bought ours in 02/2017 Compressor quit working 11/13. Local repairman came out and said the linear compressor was running but not pumping. He told me to call LG and they said they’d replace the part but not the labor. Since these are defective, they should pay the labor too! A refrigerator like this one should last 15 years or more and not stop working after 5 years! Paid almost $3,000 back then. It will cost twice that amount now if we buy a new one! Very upset.

      2. Albert Feliciano says:

I have a Lg inverter Linear French door Refrigerator and 1 year of purchase they replaced an evaporator fan Assembly 2 months after replacement the same problem accourred again and it is rattling again just like the first time. which is annoying Day and night. I called LG customer services, they gave me 3 tech contact company and they no longer Service lg products.
I also have an LG Studio exhaust fan that does not work properly, blinks constantly and con works some times.
