Woman opening LG refrigeratorA class action lawsuit claims that a defect in LG refrigerators’ compressors causes the appliances not to function.

According to the LG class action lawsuit, this defect causes LG refrigerators to fail within a few years.

Plaintiffs Gary Sosenko, Diane Terry, and Michael Burrage say they purchased refrigerators from LG that are equipped with linear compressors, and paid between $1,400 and $7,000.

Allegedly, the refrigerators possess a defect in their linear compressor, the central component responsible for cooling.

The customers say that the manufacturer actively represented the refrigerators as long-lasting and effective, and did not disclose the defect.

The LG refrigerator class action states that each consumer made the choice to purchase their LG fridge over other models because they reviewed information provided by the company about the product.

The refrigerator owners say they didn’t see any disclosure about the defect, nor were they told that the refrigerators are prone to compressor failure.

According to Sosenko and other the plaintiffs, they spent significant time and money trying to fix their refrigerators, and in some cases, their food spoiled and they went without a working refrigerator while their refrigerator was being fixed.

The consumers claim that they were financially injured by the defect because had they known that the fridges were prone to failure, they would not have purchased them or would not have paid as much for them.

Additionally, the LG refrigerator class action claims that the plaintiffs were injured because they were forced to pay for repairs, had to pay for spoiled food, and went without a refrigerator.

According to Burrage, he contacted a repair person like the other consumers, and was explicitly told that the compressor should not have failed so quickly, and should have lasted at least 10 years before failing, instead of lasting only a few years as it had in his case.

The LG refrigerator class action lawsuit notes that the National Association of Home Builders established that the average lifespan of a refrigerator is approximately 13 years, and LG reports that their refrigerators have a 20-year life span.

Sosenko, Terry, and Burrage say they specifically chose to purchase an LG refrigerator over other options because they prefer the features and aesthetics of the refrigerator to those of other refrigerators, and because LG advertises their refrigerators’ high quality and functionality.

However, the consumers claim that these representations are false, and if they encounter another LG refrigerator, they will not purchase it unless the company takes sufficient steps to “cure the defect and ensure the accuracy of its representations about its refrigerators.”

According to the LG fridge class action lawsuit, LG uses a different kind of compressor than most refrigerators and advertises the benefit of their compressor.

Allegedly, these compressors possess a more efficient mechanism that is “up to 25 percent quieter” than traditional compressors and possesses other attractive attributes. However, these compressors are reportedly more prone to failure than other compressors.

The LG refrigerator class action states that LG knew or should have known that the compressors fail prematurely but did not take sufficient action to correct the problem.

To support their claim that the company was aware of the defect, the plaintiffs note that many consumers have complained about the defect and that news stations reported on it.

The LG refrigerator owners are represented by Daniel C. Girard, Jordan Elias, Adam E. Polk, and Simon S. Grille of Girard Sharp LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Gary Sosenko, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 8:19-cv-00610, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Our LG refrigerator is covered under the warranty from the class action lawsuit. However, getting LG to schedule a repair is impossible. We spoke to someone in India via the smart diagnostic feature who could only tell us the fridge was not cold enough and to contact a repair center. The repair center number they provided wants $800 (in addition to the warranty) and 2 weeks to come out. Other than that, LG has made it impossible to request a technician to come out.

I purchased a LG refrigerator in 2017. It just died. Was sent a compressor and it was installed yesterday. Refrigerator still not getting cold.
Was told that they would “escalate my issue to the Presidential Liaison Team. They will get back to me in 5-7 business days.” So I am supposed to wait for their response. In the meantime have no refrigerator. I am supposed to hope that they remedy the situation. The customer service rep I spoke with is not able to guarantee any results. My technician told me that he has dealt with LG and they are not going to do anything about it.
I have lost 300 dollars worth of groceries and 575.00 of repair costs. My refrigerator was deemed BEYOND REPAIR!!!

  5. Leonard Edloe says:

Woke up this morning and the door of my refrigerator was leaking water from the ice maker that won’t stop running when you use it. Yes. The LG was not cooling. I purchased the refrigerator in July of 2017. So much for lasting 20 years.

LG refrigerator we purchase three years ago died in Jan2023. Took 10 days for a repair which was covered under warranty. Lost everything in the fridge and they threw us $250 to restock. Here four months later it’s dead again. It had the linear compressor that was recalled and had I known I never would have bought this crap. Now they’re placing me on hold for an hour at a time and telling me I have to pay for them to repair it again. With the same faulty garbage they used the previous time. Now that the lawsuit is closed, what happens to everyone else who is stuck with this crap?

2nd time in 8 yrs the compressor failed. Bought feb 2015. Replaced compressor in aug 2018, main electronics board in jan 20, and now the compressor failed again April 2023. Quoted 550 plus taxes for labor to replace compressor by LG. Compressor is free for 10 years. Decided never to buy LG again or recommend their products to anybody.

I purchased our LG LSXS26326S /02 from Sears in July 2019. The unit just stopped cooling last Friday at 3 years, 9months. Just starting my repair journey. Reading these accounts, doesn’t sound like it’s going to be much fun! Maybe I should just get a new one from a better brand.

Yes I also have lg fridge and compressor failure and I’m going through six hours a day on phone getting no where. Hell, when they said only parts gaurenteed ten years I said “fine send me the parts” I’m hvac guy and the still wouldn’t. Still trying . How do we hold them accountable for false advertising a ten year warranty than not honoring it. It’s bull shit, I just found out about all this lawsuit business last week when fridge broke.

  10. R Vugteveen says:

I purchased a LG model LFXS24623S from a local Home Depot store in2017. Last week on 3/26/2023 our freezer stopped cooling and just so happened the day after spending over $300 in groceries for our family. When I mentioned that our manufacture warranty stated that there was a ten year warranty on the “cooling system” we were told that “there are no repairman in our area that could service this model” and we basically felt the service rep just trying to get us off the phone and offering us no help in getting our problem rectified. After spending hours trying to find a repairman we finally found one that was willing to come out and take a look at our unit. While waiting for the repairman I went online and was astonished by the number of complaints about these refrigerators in regards to LG and the compressors as well as the lawsuits that have been filed….why is this not a recall when LG is well aware of this issue?? The following day the repairman comes out and verified that the issue is indeed the compressor and stated that he sees these LG units with bad compressors almost on a daily basis. The repair was going to cost $1000, but here is the kicker….my repairman stated that if I spend the money, first the compressor and condenser would be replaced with the same faulty components as LG has never redesigned them and second that we would more than likely have the same issue in another 5-7 years. We are a family of five and cannot wait weeks let alone weeks/months for our refrigerator to get repaired. Listen, LG should be held accountable for this problem as the average refrigerator should last 12-14 years, not 7 years. So, after much time spent on the phone, all of the aggravation and a large family that needs a refrigerator now, we decided to go out and buy a new one. Definitely will never buy a LG product again, ever. After spending over $2400 on this unit just over 7 years ago, over $300 in food spoiled, $100 for service call and countless hours on the phone we are completely dissatisfied and thoroughly disgusted with this whole outcome. We feel that our family was sold a refrigerator with Home Depot having previous knowledge that these units have faulty/defective parts as there are cases dating back to the mid 2000’s which is in my eyes is deceptive and illegal to say the least and they should be held responsible. My family doesn’t have the money to go out and purchase a new refrigerator every 3-4 years let alone the $300 for the groceries that have spoiled and the time/aggravation that LG has caused us. Please email me back and let me know how I can get involved in this lawsuit as we are a busy household and well frankly my family doesn’t have the money and time to hire a lawyer as I feel we were sold a refrigerator under deceptive practices. Contact me as I am willing to talk on the phone and give whatever information I can to help as I feel the consumers should be reimbursed and both Home Depot and LG should be held accountable. I want to be included in any and all class action lawsuits against LG and HOME DEPOT.
