Bosch Microwave Oven Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Bosch microwave oven owners lodged a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer.
  • Why: Plaintiffs allege Bosch marketed, advertised, and sold microwave oven combinations with a defect that makes the control panel “unreadable,” rendering them unsafe and unusable.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Bosch manufactured and sold microwave ovens with defective control panel displays that become unreadable with use, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Lead plaintiffs, Rebecca Hirsch, Prasanna Ramakrishnan, Amanda Carlton, and

Michele O’Dell, claim that the defect affects Bosch Series 800 stainless steel microwave oven combinations and relates to the brightness of the display on its control panel. They want to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who purchased the defective Bosch microwave ovens.

The Bosch 800 Series retails for more than $2,000 and is designed to be installed in the wall of a kitchen above a convection oven, according to the class action lawsuit.

Each of the plaintiffs say that the control panel display on their Bosch microwave oven became dim to the point that it was unreadable.

“The Control Panel is essentially the steering wheel of the Microwave/Ovens, which cannot operate properly or safely without the Control Panel,” states the class action lawsuit.

Hirsch, Ramakrishnan,Carlton, and O’Dell allege the dimness of the control panel eliminates vital features such as temperature display, cooking modes, the clock, and the timer.

Bosch Hid Microwave Oven Defect from Consumers

Bosch is being accused of deliberately attempting to conceal the defect from Plaintiffs and Class Members, says the class action lawsuit.

Hirsch, Ramakrishnan,Carlton, and O’Dell allege Bosch knew, or should have known, about the alleged defect, yet continued to market, advertise, and sell the microwave oven combinations without warning consumers.

The class action lawsuit contends that Bosch failed to provide consumers with non-defective replacements, instead opting to replace them with equally defective units or control panels, or denying the warranty claim entirely.

Plaintiffs allege some consumers beyond their warranty period had to pay $400 or more for subsequent Bosch microwave repairs and replacements. Consumers would not have purchased the Bosch microwave oven combinations had they known about the alleged defect, the class action lawsuit says.

“Plaintiffs and other similarly situated customers… purchased and used Bosch’s defective Microwave/Ovens when they otherwise would not have made such purchases on the same terms or at all, or would not have paid as much for the defective units,” states the class action lawsuit.

Plaintiffs say the alleged Bosch microwave oven defect has led to financial damages and injury, and that they are entitled to all damages, along with costs, interest and fees, as allowed by law.

Bosch had a previous class action lawsuit lodged against them in 2018 for allegedly colluding with General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler to sell diesel vehicles with defective Bosch-manufactured fuel injection pumps

This is not the first time a class action lawsuit has been filed in relation to a microwave oven either. A class action lawsuit was filed against ElectroLux Home Products for selling Frigidaire over-the-range microwaves with allegedly unsafe stainless steel handles back in 2016.

Did you buy a Bosch Series 800 microwave oven? Did you have any problems with the display? Let us know in the comments.

The plaintiffs are represented by Alex Straus, Harper T. Segui, Rachel Soffin, and Erin Ruben of Milberg Coleman Bryson Phillips Grossman LLP.

The Bosch Microwave Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Hirsch et al v. BHS Home Appliances Corporation d/b/a Bosch, Case No. 8:21-cv-01355, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Lionel Steiger says:

Same issue of dimming of Microwave portion of a micro/oven combo. Rendering it worthless. Have had 3 control panel replacements, and still have an issue.

  2. Jeff H says:

We have an 800 series Bosch convection microwave and experienced several of these common problems after the first yezr, including the dimming panel lights and breaking door hinges. We replaced the door once and in only a few months, the door hinges broke again. Bosch customer service left a lot to be desired. At this point, our Bosch microwave has been broken longer than it ever worked.

  3. Felicia skinner says:

My bosch oven/ microwave caught on fire 11/12/22. Purchased 8/2018 from authorized bosch appliance store. Bosch repair person was dispatched and confirmed microwave is not repairable, however bosch refusing to acknowledge anything further regarding my request for replacement.

    1. Skinner says:

      Continued from above
      Bosch 800 series

  4. Jonni Schween says:

I also have the 500series microwave/convection oven combination and have the same issues as the 800 series. numerous repairmen have told me there is no fix and I have talked with Bosch numerous times and have been told the unit was designed that way. You can’t hear it and can’t see the display. A neighbor burned her food because of this…it could be a fire danger. NO help from Bosch!

  5. Janet Morrison says:

Bosche has a bigger problem with their combination electric oven microwave convection oven wall unit. The fuse and switches controlling the microwave blow and break if the door is shut “to hard”. Nothing on the micro/convection oven works when it happens! All appliance repair people know it’s an issue. Will cost $500.00 to repair and parts won’t be in for 4months. Please look into this.

  6. Daniel Vanderpriem says:

500 series speed oven here. Same issues. The control panel was replaced, the convection oven worked twice, and the turntable is dead. My prior world pool lasted for 20 years. Don’t even start me on the low volume timer beeper.

  7. Gary Grabow says:

Our 500 series Bosch MW has same issues as 800, door switches, blown fuses, magnetron arcing. Bosch Customer service is useless, we are on a 6 month wait list with 105 other consumers to get a replacement MW from them at a cost to us of $550! Their MW’s are all made in China!!!!!

  8. NinaM says:

Bosch repairman just left. We had the exact same issue with the switches in the door. We were told it would be close to $600 to fix. This microwave is only 3 1/2 years old. It is time for Bosch to fix this issue!

  9. Aimee Corne says:

Hi this just happened to us. Had the damn thing for 2 years and the repairman told me it would cost $1600 to repair. Super angry

  10. Karen Faux says:

After owning our new home for less than a year our Bosch 800 series microwave/oven began blowing circuits in our home. The appliance repair company replaced switches in the microwave unit (numerous times, too many to count) and eventually the entire display panel. We have yet to have a working microwave and oven. After searching on-line I discovered the information on the class action suit against this company. I would like for our experience to be shared with the group. It is shameful that this company has allowed this type of problem to persist. Despite having purchased a homeowners warranty we will have invested nearly $1,000 of our own money in costs associated with repairs.
