Bosch Microwave Oven Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Bosch microwave oven owners lodged a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer.
  • Why: Plaintiffs allege Bosch marketed, advertised, and sold microwave oven combinations with a defect that makes the control panel “unreadable,” rendering them unsafe and unusable.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Bosch manufactured and sold microwave ovens with defective control panel displays that become unreadable with use, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Lead plaintiffs, Rebecca Hirsch, Prasanna Ramakrishnan, Amanda Carlton, and

Michele O’Dell, claim that the defect affects Bosch Series 800 stainless steel microwave oven combinations and relates to the brightness of the display on its control panel. They want to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who purchased the defective Bosch microwave ovens.

The Bosch 800 Series retails for more than $2,000 and is designed to be installed in the wall of a kitchen above a convection oven, according to the class action lawsuit.

Each of the plaintiffs say that the control panel display on their Bosch microwave oven became dim to the point that it was unreadable.

“The Control Panel is essentially the steering wheel of the Microwave/Ovens, which cannot operate properly or safely without the Control Panel,” states the class action lawsuit.

Hirsch, Ramakrishnan,Carlton, and O’Dell allege the dimness of the control panel eliminates vital features such as temperature display, cooking modes, the clock, and the timer.

Bosch Hid Microwave Oven Defect from Consumers

Bosch is being accused of deliberately attempting to conceal the defect from Plaintiffs and Class Members, says the class action lawsuit.

Hirsch, Ramakrishnan,Carlton, and O’Dell allege Bosch knew, or should have known, about the alleged defect, yet continued to market, advertise, and sell the microwave oven combinations without warning consumers.

The class action lawsuit contends that Bosch failed to provide consumers with non-defective replacements, instead opting to replace them with equally defective units or control panels, or denying the warranty claim entirely.

Plaintiffs allege some consumers beyond their warranty period had to pay $400 or more for subsequent Bosch microwave repairs and replacements. Consumers would not have purchased the Bosch microwave oven combinations had they known about the alleged defect, the class action lawsuit says.

“Plaintiffs and other similarly situated customers… purchased and used Bosch’s defective Microwave/Ovens when they otherwise would not have made such purchases on the same terms or at all, or would not have paid as much for the defective units,” states the class action lawsuit.

Plaintiffs say the alleged Bosch microwave oven defect has led to financial damages and injury, and that they are entitled to all damages, along with costs, interest and fees, as allowed by law.

Bosch had a previous class action lawsuit lodged against them in 2018 for allegedly colluding with General Motors, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler to sell diesel vehicles with defective Bosch-manufactured fuel injection pumps

This is not the first time a class action lawsuit has been filed in relation to a microwave oven either. A class action lawsuit was filed against ElectroLux Home Products for selling Frigidaire over-the-range microwaves with allegedly unsafe stainless steel handles back in 2016.

Did you buy a Bosch Series 800 microwave oven? Did you have any problems with the display? Let us know in the comments.

The plaintiffs are represented by Alex Straus, Harper T. Segui, Rachel Soffin, and Erin Ruben of Milberg Coleman Bryson Phillips Grossman LLP.

The Bosch Microwave Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Hirsch et al v. BHS Home Appliances Corporation d/b/a Bosch, Case No. 8:21-cv-01355, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  1. Bryan says:

I’m a Canadian. Please cover Canadian consumers.

  2. Bill Siemers says:

Microwave has fried switches, blown fuses. Hundreds of dollars spent on service and parts. We have been without the microwave for three weeks. Also…. Do not use the self clean on the conventional oven. It burned the finish off the bottom of the oven.

  3. Joseph Avila says:

Our 1 year old $1200 bosch 800 series microwave is arching and almost caused a fire. This is absolutely inexcusable

  4. Mark Rabe says:

    800 microwave troubles

  5. Dinesh says:

My brand new 800 series combination oven-microwaves is dead on delivery. We never had a chance to use it. It is now sitting in my dining room floor waiting for Bosch to figure out what to do about it. It has been over six weeks.

  6. Norbert Wesely says:

We replaced 3x the control board , 2x the door switches, 3x temperature fuse.
    Still not working.
Bosch solution: Replace the whole Speed oven.
    With the same problems!

  7. Mike Parris says:

My model HMC87151UC/01 Bosch microwave/comvection oven just started throwing the breaker, stopped working at all. 4 1/2 years old. Is there any way to get Bosch involved or not?

  8. Henry J Mohrman Jr says:

Our Bosch 800 microwave/convection oven failed after 4 years of service. The Bosch authorized factory service representative diagnosed the problem as a blown fuse, caused by failure of the switches imbedded in the door latches to shut off the microwave generator when the door is opened. He suggested that downward pressure on the switches caused the failure.

He could not repair the microwave, because it was a two-man job and because parts were not available at this time. Consequently, we were forced to buy a new Bosch 800 microwave/convection oven. I have inspected the brand new Bosch 800 and observed that the oven door is out of plumb with the oven box by 1-2 cm, which could lead to failure of the unit in ordinary usage. I will make a warranty claim to Bosch and see what they recommend. However, it seems to me that there may be a second and very serious class action claim related to this misalignment leading to unit failure, which you may wish to investigate. If you do, I will be happy to cooperate with you.

I also have the exact same switch issue, but diagnosed by myself. The difference is that the hinges of my microwave door are broken already. I also believe the door switch issue was caused by this poor door design.
Can you please let me know how Bosch responded to your claim?

      1. Kris says:

Same problem. Diagnosed and repaired by our repairman. 4 months later happened again. The service rep at Bosch told him the interlock assemblies are really bad on these units and they have tons of repair requests. We also had to replace the control board at $800 a few years ago and the turntable also stopped working. Waste of money.

  9. Flip Felix says:

We have the 800 series microwave speed oven and convection oven. Replaced panels twice on microwave and has blown again as well as the interior light and turntable .the convection oven has had its panel replaced once. These repairs were all done at our expense except the first panel part Bosch paid for. We paid over $3400 for these defective ovens and Bosch will not talk to us and the repair people will not call us back.the microwave speed oven still works a little bit We just hit the 30 Sec. Button because we can’t read anything or see anything in the oven I am about to get rid of both but 6 years if headache and non working crap. Big loss for us.
