Honda Motor Co. has reached a class action settlement over claims that some of its vehicles excessively burned oil, causing engine misfiring and premature spark plug degradation. If you purchased a 2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey, 2009-2013 Honda Pilot, 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour or 2012 Honda Crosstour equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), you could be eligible to receive compensation for repairs or a warranty extension.
The Honda engine misfire settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit (Soto, et al. v. Honda Motor Co. Inc.) alleging that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million defective vehicles that excessively burned oil.
Honda has denied the allegations in the class action lawsuit. The parties agree that there are no safety concerns with the vehicles named in the litigation. Honda agreed to the class action settlement in order to avoid the costs of a trial. The proposed class action settlement was preliminarily approved by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston on Oct. 9, 2013.
To receive full compensation for your vehicle repairs, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014. Class Members do not need to take any action to obtain the warranty extension, which will cover repairs for the affected vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.
Who’s Eligible
Class Members of the Honda engine defect class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:
- 2008-2012 Honda Accord
- 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
- 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
- 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
- 2012 Honda Crosstour

I’m curious how this strategy is working for you, Jerry? We’re having the same issue, Honda will do nothing, we need to decide if we are gonna try your method (leaning that direction) or start over.
I had a 2012 Honda pilot. I purchased it in 2018. Over the last 2 years I had 2 misfires and had to change the spark plugs. And a couple of weeks ago my engine came on flashing and traction light came on. Find out it my piston rings, cylinder 2 misfire, anti-lock brake system 83-11 and 61-11. Please do another lawsuit or a recall something. This really needs to be a recall. I really wish I knew about this problem with some Hondas cause I would of not bought this car at all.
I spoke to American Honda and they denied the claim saying that the extended warranty expired and I didn’t get the van serviced enough like that has anything to do with it.
Exactly!!! I ran into the same issues… I’ve only had my 2008 Honda Accord EXL for 3 yrs & had nothing BUT, problems! Especially with oil consumption! I’ve already spent well over the cost of the car & become in debt due to continuing problems!! It’s unfair to not also be included in the settlement when we had no way of knowing this when we purchased our vehicles!! The car somehow ran beautiful for the first month (maybe) & it’s been un drivable & had to be towed to a shop several times (at least 4 including now, as of yesterday?) I just had work done 1 month ago & was told the car is fine now.. & without warning 4 different engine & OIL lights came on & car started putting….. This is soo UNFAIR!!!
EVERY SINGLE CAR OWNER OF THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE SETTLEMENT!! There should not be a time limit since it’s continuing to happen…
I bought cash a 2012 Honda Pilot EXL 6 cylinder on December 13, 2019. Shortly after I purchased it I noticed that the vehicle would hesitate to accelerate when trying it and it jumps when I put it in reverse while parked on a small hill. Also, it started shaking and the engine light started to blink. I have taken the vehicle to the mechanic about three times already because of misfires on the cylinders so I changed the cylinders and spark plugs within 2 years and a half, for a while the vehicle runs great (still hesitating) but then after a while it starts to shake again. I take it back to the mechanic and he says it’s a misfire again. I love my vehicle but I am so frustrated with this already. Please advice.
I have an 2008 honda accord sedan ex jus had 6500 miles when it’s started to gave hard start I change the starter,crank sensor, spark plugs, same problem finally went to the 5th shop the oil was low that’s why it’s gave hard start and Gare down when driving I lost so much money try to find out wat the problem was an money gone to wase with all the fix I did all I do now top it up with oil every 2weeks it have 7600 miles now idk wat to do
2010 Honda Odessa yes cylinder oil damage just like everyone else. At my mechanic now. Whoever left Honda

My 2012 Odyssey had misfiring and they replace coil, spark plugs and etc in 2015. Fast forward same thing happened again 2022 May and my dealer emailed Honda and they will cover the $4500 repair and I just pay taxes for the parts which probably come out less than $200 which I think is lesser of two evil. Question is how long this Misfiring issue will last and will it be covered next time. Very curious!!
We just had this code pop up this week. We have a 2013 Odyssey that we purchased in 2016. Apparently our 8 year warranty was up in June (8 years from original purchase). The dealership had us call Honda Customer Care and ask if they would extend for us since we are just 4 months past. The woman on the phone told my husband that we didnt have “longevity” as Honda owners for her to offer a “goodwill coverage request” for us to try and get it covered. I guess she’s not concerned with us getting any longevity since its not looking like we will be repeat Honda owners.
Just got the coil fixed, $85 tow, $129 diagnostic, and $150 to swap out the spark plug. I got it back last week and it’s already fouling out again. I’m livid, there is no way I can afford to sink 4k in this lemon for a piston swap, if that’s what’s going on.
Same issue at 125K miles and dealer says piston work. Without any confidence on the outcome asking customers to fork is insane.
Any update on what Honda rep or dealer response?
My car is currently with dealer – price quoted $4200 for piston (back base or something).

I am reaching out to see if something has been done about your car. My car was diagnosed with the same issue by a Toyota dealer today and I plan to take it to an Honda dealer tomorrow and can’t wait to hear what they will say.
So, I received my first misfire code in 2018 at 124,000 miles. Immediately took it to the dealership and they performed warranty procedure “A” which was to reset the code, replace spark plugs and perform software update. Not so sure what the software update did other than kick the can down the road. Since then my 2010 Crosstour has continued to consume an extra 2 quarts of oil per oil change. Here I am almost exactly 3 years and 50,000 miles later and the problem is back. Code P0301. Took it to the dealer and pointed out that in 2018 they noted that if the code came back they would need to do procedure “B” which is the piston ring replacement. I expected this to be performed under warranty since this looked like a 2-step process to me. Nope! They said the warranty was 8 years from time of purchase and unlimited miles. They wouldn’t even contact Honda Corporate to see if they would do it under good will. The quote to perform the work is $3500. I am not sinking $3500 into a car that continues to depreciate and is currently only worth ~$5000 private party.
Instead I am going to drive the wheels off of this damn thing. I’ll change the spark plugs on the affected cylinders every 50k and will even try going to 5w30 oil instead of 0w20. I have been running Mobile 1 synthetic since new so I am thinking that thicker viscosity oil may reduce the oil getting past the piston rings. At this point I have nothing to lose so I might as well try it.
I really wish there would be another lawsuit since so many of us have been left behind in the class action. Btw, I never received notification that there was a lawsuit/service bulletin.
Same here … they fixed piston rings in 2019 and now (March 2022) same problem. They want me to fork over $3900. Crooks.
My always fouls the same coil on the same cylinder.. what I did was buy a new coil from auto zone with a lifetime warranty and just replace it as needed.. it don’t take but about 30 min or less to do it.. I always keep a spare coil in my trunk..
I know this Sux.. but that’s all I know to do at this point..
