Honda Civic tire wear class action settlement

Honda Motor Co. has reached a class action settlement over claims that some of its vehicles excessively burned oil, causing engine misfiring and premature spark plug degradation. If you purchased a  2008-2012 Honda Accord, 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey, 2009-2013 Honda Pilot, 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour or 2012 Honda Crosstour equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), you could be eligible to receive compensation for repairs or a warranty extension.

The Honda engine misfire settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit (Soto, et al. v. Honda Motor Co. Inc.) alleging that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million defective vehicles that excessively burned oil.

Honda has denied the allegations in the class action lawsuit. The parties agree that there are no safety concerns with the vehicles named in the litigation. Honda agreed to the class action settlement in order to avoid the costs of a trial. The proposed class action settlement was preliminarily approved by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston on Oct. 9, 2013.

To receive full compensation for your vehicle repairs, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014. Class Members do not need to take any action to obtain the warranty extension, which will cover repairs for the affected vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Honda engine defect class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
  • 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2012 Honda Crosstour

    Had the same problem with my 2011 Honda Accord. Cardinal Honda in Groton, Connecticut told me I would need a junk yard engine or new plugs to get by temporarily after finding code PO301. The junk yard engine would cost $4000 not including labor. They said that the fouled cylinder 1 plug was probably due to a worn out cylinder. I did some computer research and took the car to another mechanic and they fixed the problem for $1100 dollars. they put in two ignition coils, 6 spark plugs, intake manifold reseal plenum gasket set, a valve cover gasket set set and did a GDI/PFI 2-step fuel system cleaning and my car runs like new.

      I have a 2010 Honda accord coupe V6 6 speed manual. It seems like it burns about a quart every two to three weeks. The car runs perfect still. I’m not leaking anything, but if I don’t check the oil regularly, I’m certain I’m going to damage the engine. I’ve always used mobile one synthetic oil for oil changes. I appreciate you posting all that information, because I feel like I’m having the same problem that you fixed.

    I have a 2013 Honda Odyssey. Mine started vibrating and running ragged, took to shop, they replaced fouled spark plug, within 2 days it happened again. Our shop gave us a cope of the service bulletin with the class action lawsuit and said if it happens again to take to the dealership. So 2 days later it happens again. Call dealer and my vin# is NOT included! SAME issue, but not included. Honda sure did get a slap on the wrist! Not fair at all! I am so irritated with them.

    2011 Honda Odyssey, engine light came on, motor shaking, and this was the same situation that happened to us in 2015 with the same vehicle. Honda district manager told us that there is no way to know that there is no way to know that the replacement piston rings that were replaced on our Odyssey (2015) are a manufacturer defect (lemon.) We have serviced our vehicle and kept it up to service. We drove roughly 75,000 miles since those piston rings were replaced. Spoke to my service advisor today, and he informed me that there was another 2011 Honda Odyssey that was brought in today for the same reason.

      Update: now, after all 4 piston rings and spark plugs have been replaced, the van is diagnosed with bad engine.
      RECAP: 2011 Odyssey, purchased in August 2014 w-28284 miles, w-Honda Certified Pre-owned buyer program, in Aug-2015 w-42826 had piston rings 1-3 replaced w-spark plugs replaced (under Honda engine misfire warranty lawsuit), kept recommended services to date, May 2021 w-123000 miles the piston rings issue resurfaced and I presume caused the engine to be ruined.

        Now, we had to replace the catalytic converter. That was done. Now there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust when accelerating on the road plus a stinky smell inside the cabin.
        Remember this is the 2011 Odyssey that had the piston rings replaced via warranty in August 2015 at 42,826 miles, and then same issue again in May 2021 at 123,000 miles. Had the motor replaced as a result of the piston ring issue/failure in 2021. Then the catalytic converter failure is currently our issue, or could be oil leaking into the piston ring, burning gas, or could be something else? I am wondering if this issue has anything to do with the piston ring failure that caused the motor to have to be replaced. Honda corporate is basically getting away with their Lemons, while we the customer are stuck. Local dealer is wonderful! However I will never invest in a Honda vehicle again!

    I have a 2012 Honda Odyssey and the engine light came on after it made a weird noise. I took it to get the codes read and said It was a cylinder misfire. Then the engine light started flashing and my car started shaking so I turned it off and now I have to get it towed to Honda to fix. They should definitely reopen the law suit or start a new one!

      I have a 2012 Odyssey and it has been doing the same thing. Changed the spark plug and cylinder and it last about 3 weeks if I’m lucky. They need another the LAWSUIT! It’s a very expensive fix Honda needs to be reliable for. It’s so frustrating!

    We are having the same issue with our 2009 Accord ex-l saw the car was in for the update software at 66,000 (roughly) plugs were changed and update to cylinder management system.. We bought the car at 81,000 did the routine plug change at 103,00.. several oil changes the service adviser mentioned that the car was low on oil when brought in for routine oil change and to keep a check on the oil. at 113,000 the first p0303 code comes in, offered the full piston ring redo, or plugs tubes and valves, we did the later do to cost. The vehicle burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles. now at 118,000 we got the 2nd p0303 code. Now faced with the $4000k piston redo. I am going to try that number and see what happens. This appears to be an obvious failure or defect that Honda is aware of. This isnt ford or chevy, Its Honda we bought Honda for a reason, if wanted to rebuild and engine every 100k would have gone with another car company.

    I am also wondering why I was never contacted about the issuse?? I have a 2008 honda accord exl and my car just started this within the last couple of months!!! It is ridiculous how much gas I go thru for very little driving!

    Same issue! 2012 odyssey 42,000 miles. Of Course it’s out of extended warranty! Did anyone get help from this issue? We called the hotline and they will call in 2 days, but doesn’t look promising. Did Anybody have any luck! This issue needs another class action lawsuit!

      2010 honda odyssey just had my light come on today and the code is p0303 this is ridiculous I’ve already replaced the spark plugs just last year and I’ve only owned my car for 5 years

    It’s Fri March 26, 2021 and it wasn’t until another car shop printed out the lawsuit and handed it to me, that I found out about this. I took it to the dealership, where they rang a diagnostic and confirmed what was happening. He then told me I was outside the deadline, and still need to pay the diagnostic bill of $166. Then quoted me $2,250 to fix my car. I called Honda (888-528-7876) and they told me someone will call me next wk (because today is Fri) and my case manager will try and see if they can work something out to “help” with payment. I feel like we should take out another claim/lawsuit with Honda since there are so many of us. I can’t help it, that my car’s warning lights came on, after the expiration date, on the warranty. Not to mention, we’ve had work done on our cars at the dealership, prior, and no one mentioned this to us. I will also be asking for a history printout to show, we’ve been in, several times, and no one brought this to our attention. I also plan on contacting the lawyers, who dealt with this case before, to see if there is anything that can be done.

      JUST had the same issue for our 2011 Odyssey, SO INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING. We spent thousands in maintenance with the dealer and NO ONE mentioned this.

        Did Honda offer to pay for the repairs? My daughter’s car is currently at the dealership. I am trying to see if Honda is paying for any repairs. We were told that the warranty program had already expired.

      We are having the same issue with our 2016 Odyssey. We purchased used from a dealership 12 months ago with 88,000 miles. Now have 104k miles and have spent the last 3 months troubleshooting a misfire code with our mechanic. Finally took it to a Honda dealership and they quoted us almost $4,000 to fix the problem (“perform engine rebuild 1-3 piston oil rings are stuck”). After hours of research I stumbled upon the class action lawsuit but was frustrated to learn it was now closed and doesn’t include the model year of my vehicle. This is clearly still an ongoing issue with newer model Honda vehicles. What can we do?

      I think that’s a great idea to open a new class action. I was told by Honda that they will only pay 50% to repair my 2013 Honda pilot. I said hell no ,you pay all repairs.This was not my doing. You never should’ve sold a car that had this kind of problem. I will try to contact that lawyer too!

      My name is Lester Boredom, I have a 2010 Honda Accord V-6. It is 12 years old, and I have Taking care of it without fail. Always change my oil early with oil filter. Flushed my radiator, flush the transmission etc. I have 95, 500 miles on my Honda, which by the way I’ve never had an issue with the engine or anything else. That is, until recently when it started miss firing. I took it to the Honda dealer and they refuse to do anything about it, I still haven’t heard back from Honda America about what they wanna do. But I think we should start another class action lawsuit against Honda, because I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay $4000 for a ring job and another $300 for a computer upgrade. Plus the diagnostic cost me another 150 or so dollars. I should have never had to encourage the cost of anything. This is an engineering design flaw, plain and simple class action suit was an easy way out for Honda. It’s time now that other Honda owners who have the same issues as others here, Get together another class action suit against Honda. Let me know your feelings, or at least let me know if your witness

        same problem had it fix once a a honda dealer and it happen again what a piece of crap never buy another honda again ,, have a 2006 kia sedona with 300,000 miles on it not one problem at all with the engine it is never going to die like the crappy honda that i own ,, buy kia it is cheaper and a lot better car then the honda you pay for the honda name and have nothing but trouble

      We are 4 months past the 8 year warranty and this is the first time we have had this issue and the first time we have heard about the lawsuit. We bought our 2013 odyssey used in 2016. My husband called (per the dealership) and asked for coverage and she told him that we dont have enough length of ownership for her to extend the “goodwill coverage request” for us.

    My 2012 Honda Accord is having these same issues. They started happening in 2018, 4 years after they closed the class action lawsuit involving my year of Honda Accord. I heard from my mechanic that Honda issued an “extended warranty” for the “oil consumption issue”. Has anyone been successful with getting any help from Honda on these issues?

      Had the same problem in 2016 they didn’t say a word now having same problem and want to charge me $5300.00 to fix. And they new about this. Only had maybe 40,000 miles the first time, only have a 100,000 now. But was less than when they told me it was going to be $5300.00
