Honda class action lawsuitThousands of Honda owners will receive free warranty extensions and refunds for repair bills caused by excessive oil consumption thanks to a 2013 class action lawsuit settlement that’s finally paying out. The average payout is between $235 and $294, according to reports.

The first wave of checks were mailed on July 14, with a second wave going out in the Fall, according the Settlement Administrator.

The money is from a class action lawsuit (Soto v. Honda Motor Co. Inc.) filed in March 2012 that accused the automaker of selling more than 1. 5 million defective vehicles that excessively burned oil. The alleged defect caused the Honda engines to misfire and forced car owners to constantly monitor oil levels, leading to expensive repair bills to fix damage caused by Honda engine oil defect.

Honda denied the allegations but agreed to provide full compensation for out-of-pocket repair expenses, plus a warranty extension to cover future repairs for covered damage that occurs within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle.

Class Members of the Honda engine class action settlement included all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
  • 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2012 Honda Crosstour

Class Members did not have to take action to receive the warranty extension — they will automatically receive this benefit — but had to submit a valid claim form by April 10, 2014 to receive full compensation for vehicle repairs.

A California federal judge granted final approval to the Honda engine misfire settlement on March 27.

Settlement Administrator Rust Consulting said in Court documents that it received over 7,164 claims for reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses (as of March 3). Over 1.87 million current and former Honda owners were eligible to participate.

This Honda Accord is the worst vehicle i have ever purchased! I have had more issues than i care to write about, but the one that really bothers me is the spark plug and burning oil issue, especially since i found out there was a lawsuit against Honda and that i must have notified them by 2014 to get reimbursed. Yea well i would loved to have notified them at Honda but the issue occurred after 2014. I will never buy a Honda again, once i get rid of the money machine! They are horrible at Honda at making things right too, and i am not surprised why there are so many negative comments online. I have had an issue with the seat belt on drivers side for years. i took to a Honda dealership and they would not replace, because they dont care about customers safety, they only care about money!

I purchased a 2012 Accord in 2017 for my son. The piston issue did not occur until December 2020. The mechanic who discovered it replaced the spark plugs, mentioned the issue to us, and recommended taking it to a Honda dealership. I did not want to pay a small fortune, so I spoke to a mechanic who we know. He knew about the issue, wouldn’t even attempt to repair it, but let us know a dealership would charge $3500 for the repair. We cannot afford that. I researched and called Honda to inquire about the warranty extension. I was told that I did not qualify because I was the second owner and there are too many miles on the car. I have been playing email tag with Honda which has proven to be a waste of time. I would have never purchased this car for my son to drive if I had known of this issue. I own three Hondas and have a feeling one of them will be difficult to get rid of. I am so disappointed in this company.

I am in the same boat – purchased a 2013 Honda Pilot about a year ago. Had to change spark plug 3 times and would consume oil quickly.. took it in to be serviced 2000 out of pocket.. and 2 months later the same spark plug went bad.. returned to mechanic and he identified the tsb issue…. Honda will not honor this warranty stating my VIN is not covered… the Honda mechanic was baffled that they would not cover this… not sure what to do..???

I have a 2015 Honda Pilot Touring that I just purchased from a Honda dealer 3 months ago. Two days ago, my wife was driving and suddenly the check engine light came on and a few minutes later, the VMT-4 and Traction Control lights came on. Took to dealer, and they said 3 pistons are misfiring and one sparkplug needs changing! Very upset. The protection plan I got for it doesn’t want to pay. From these posts, it sounds like this pistons misfire continues to happen in the 2015 models. Is there a way to extend this class action lawsuit to the 2015 models?! All I need is the repair, no money for myself!

I have a 2009 Honda Pilot that I bought used in 2017. One day, I came out to start the car and it sounded like it was near death, so I had it towed to my mechanic who advised me the engine seized… I had JUST had the oil changed and maintenance done on the car 2 weeks prior. This is going to cost me $6000 to fix and I am in the process of fighting with Honda to pay for the repairs. As the class action lawsuit for this was settled prior to me owning the car, I see no reason for them not to offer compensation or negotiate a reasonable agreement. Simply put, this is a MAJOR safety issue and clearly an issue Honda is fully aware of. I’m not backing down on this, nor should anyone else in this predicament. This is not normal wear and tear- it’s faulty mechanical engineering. I’m so disappointed as I’ve owned Hondas since I first started driving back in 1992. I’ve always been happy with them until now.

    1. Crystal Williams says:

Just curious how this worked out. I am having the same issue. Honda says they will not fix.

    2. Lisa Burquin says:

      Me too!

  8. Magdy says:

I have Honda odyssey 2009 . I remember I filed with a claim for extended warranty but I never got the paper work or anything to prove that . I got into troubles with this car costing me over $ 4500 lately and I don’t know what to do . Is anyone can help .

    Thank you
