Man in a black suit reaches across a desk to hand someone a check - refund checks

The Federal Trade Commission announced that it sent out refund checks in three consumer cases in July.

American Student Loan Consolidators Refunds

The FTC is sending out more than $1 million in checks to those individuals taken in by a student loan debt relief scam. In total, 41,048 refund checks are being sent out. Each check is worth between $10 and $27.03, and will go to those who lost money in the scam.

The FTC accused American Student Loan Consolidators, United Processing Center and others of falsely stating that they would forgive students loans, lower a debtor’s monthly payments or lower their interest rates. According to the FTC, the company would charge consumers hundreds of dollars in fees for student loan assistance, but then not provide the promised help.

Allegedly, the company falsely told debtors that they were affiliated with loan services and the U.S. Department of of Education.

The FTC advises individuals who receive a refund check from the American Student Loan Consolidators refund to cash it within 90 days, as it will become invalidated after that point.

Helping America Group Refunds

The FTC has announced that it is sending out $16 million in the form of 27,083 checks to those individuals harmed by a debt relief scam allegedly perpetrated by the Helping America Group.

The FTC filed claims against the organization accusing it of falsely advertising to consumers that the company would help with debt. Allegedly, the organization promised to dismiss, pay or settle debt on behalf of consumers.

According to the FTC, the company would charge hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars a month for the debt relief services that turned out to be bogus. The company did not relieve consumer debt as promised, and instead took advantage of desperate consumers for its own profit.

Allegedly, consumers were left on their own to discover they were still in debt, their credit was lowered and, in some cases, their accounts were in default.

The FTC advises individuals who receive a check from the Helping America Group refund to cash it within 90 days, as it will become invalidated after that point.

Consumers with questions about the Helping America Group refunds are invited to call JND Legal Administration at 1-833-928-2567.

Corporate Compliance Services Refunds

The FTC is sending out more than $1 million to consumers affected by a Corporate Compliance Services scheme. This money will be sent out in the form of 26,817 refund checks worth $40.80 each.

In this deceptive scheme lawsuit, the FTC was joined by the Florida Office for the Attorney General and the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

The FTC and the two attorneys general accused Corporate Compliance Services of impersonating government agencies by sending out mailers that look like governmental invoices selling labor law posters.

Allegedly, these fraudulent mailers were sent to businesses and tricked them into thinking that they needed to pay a fine.

The FTC and the attorneys general say the posters are misleading and falsely claimed the businesses must pay $84 to be in compliance with posting regulations. Allegedly, the mailers read “failure to comply with posting regulations can lead to fines of up to $17,000.”

The FTC advises individuals who receive a refund check from the Corporate Compliance Services refund to cash it within 60 days, as it will become invalidated after that point.

Consumers with questions about the Corporate Compliance Services refunds are invited to call Rust Consulting at 1-877-874-5786 for more information.

The FTC aims to protect consumers from a range of scams that might harm them financially. Consumers should be on the lookout for potential scams.

These scams may come in the from of robocall advertisements, spam emails, mailers and websites offering bogus services. Doing your research is important to understanding the nature of an offer and determining if there are hidden costs or catches, or if the company is not being truthful.

In many cases, it may be possible to determine the source of a potential scam.

For instance, if you receive a notice from an entity that looks like a government agency, visit the agency’s website to determine if the information is available on the site or reach out to an official contact to verify information before sending money.

Currently, the FTC and the Justice Department are cracking down on scams related to the coronavirus, as scammers try to capitalize on the public’s fears by peddling bogus COVID-19 cures, fake vaccines, and other useless products.

    Ms. Ward,

Also write your Senator’s and Congress representatives in your State and district where you reside. It does not matter your political position, they represent you. Giving them permission to look into this for you in behalf of your son. They should write a letter inform them about this. Any Agency will give these represenatives answer very quickly. They have priority before all others with a response. It also puts them in the spot light to resolve this matter. Send them copies of everything too. I hope this will help also. If the US Department of Treasure knows that these officials are involved, that should help get a quicker response and help resolve this matter.

    Ms. Ward,

Contact the United State Department of Treasury. Show them copies of how you been perusing this money for your son over the time period that this has been happening to you. It is illegal for someone to use someone Social Security benefits that is not for the benefit of the child or a person”s benefit that they are entitled to those benefits. You will have to show that you been trying to persue in collecting these funds for your son. If you are the represenative payee then you are able to act in your son behalf. You should have been also receiving a form every so often asking you to report to Social Security Office how the money was spent in your son’s behalf. Example cost for helping to provide a home for him to live in. Food, clothes, cost for anything pertaining to your son’s education etc. I am not an Attorney, but I know by experience. The key is to list all the places and time line that you have been trying to persue and correct this matter. Remember if it is not in writing it never happened. You need to notify them in writing by certified mail with sign receipt requested back to you, as proof. You will have to provide copies of your records, police report all letters to and from everyone that you contacted about this matter. Never ever give your original paper work. They will investigate and they will tract down the individual’s who has done this. Plus they are the ones who can reissue payment to you for the benefits that are owed to your son. That is my understanding. I hope this helps and works for you and your son. God Bless. Another Mom who understands.

There is a typo from this website regarding the Google class action suit. Rodriguez et al. vs Google is Case #5:20-cv-4688. I have obtained the suit documents from the law firm, and the number 5:20-cv-4688 is what the documents reflect. Please change this as soon as you have available.
