John Deere equipment repair overview:

  • Who: John Deere has signed an agreement with the American Farm Bureau Federation that commits them to providing diagnostic tools to customers so they can conduct their own equipment repairs.
  • Why: John Deere had previously come under fire for withholding equipment diagnostic tools from farmers and small repair shops that was necessary for them to have to conduct their own repairs.
  • Where: The agreement will impact John Deere equipment owners nationwide.

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) has signed a memorandum of understanding with John Deere that will enable farmers who own John Deere farm equipment to conduct their own repairs.

Per the agreement, farmers will have access to John Deere’s diagnostic repair codes, manuals, and product guides, and will be able to buy diagnostic tools directly from John Deere, who has also committed to assisting them during the ordering process.

The agreement comes amidst multiple ongoing class action lawsuits filed by farmers arguing they are not allowed to conduct their own repairs for their John Deere farm equipment, alleging the company wants to restrict competition for equipment repair services.

John Deere has been accused of requiring its customers to go to a John Deere-affiliated dealership to have repairs done, which farmers argue prevents them from being able to fix the problems by themselves faster and for less money.

Farmers claimed John Deere was violating the law by withholding equipment diagnostic tools needed to conduct repairs

Farmers argued John Deere was violating the Sherman Act by allegedly attempting to control the repair market by withholding access to equipment diagnostic tools from both farmers and small repair shops.

David Gilmore, John Deere’s Senior Vice President, Ag & Turf Sales & Marketing, said the agreement “reaffirms the longstanding commitment” the company has made to ensure its customers are able to conduct their own repairs.

“We look forward to working alongside the American Farm Bureau and our customers in the months and years ahead to ensure farmers continue to have the tools and resources to diagnose, maintain and repair their equipment,” Gilmore said, in a statement

In a separate case involving tractor equipment, Citgo Petroleum Corporation agreed to pay almost $19 million in 2019 to resolve claims the company sold tractor fluid that did not meet modern specifications and could cause damage.

One thought on John Deere to allow independent farm equipment repair

  1. LW says:

John Deere really screwed us over. Not only did the John Deere certified repair company run our equipment without oil that stopped logging completely until repairs were complete. Then John Deere took our insurance repair money upfront not leftover for payments that got behind as a result of their blunder. Consequently we could not repair the equipment. This took us out of logging business. We had about 150,000 in that equipment and that is just the tip of the iceberg of what we lost because of John Deere.
