Good Morning, Everyone! I hope you had a FANTASTIC week!
We did here in Arizona! Sydney scored FOUR goals for her soccer team on Saturday! What a rock star! Syd’s team won their game, 6-0. That kid amazes me every single day! As someone who is not naturally athletic, it amazes how quickly she picks up new sports and does so well with them.
On the work front, we’ve been busy planning and implementing the initial changes and updates to make 2018 ridiculously successful. In fact, I just got back from a business trip with one of my best friends, who is also a mentor and business partner. He’s a guy who’s well known in his hometown (he used to be the smiling lawyer on the back of the phone book), and is still called “the Mayor” by those “in the know.”
It’s great to spend time with him, not just because he’s my buddy, but because he shares so much great entrepreneurial advice with me. He’s been UP and he’s been down, but he always gets back up. I’m lucky to have friends like him, who help advise me through investments, client deals, and life. He’s a self-made millionaire who’s been through it all and shares wisdom with me every time I see him. Sometimes I don’t like to hear it. Sometimes he has to say, “Scott, that won’t work. Even though you’ve got big dollar signs in your eyes, you will lose money if you do X. Here’s what happened to me, and why I say that.” When that happens and “smart” me walks away saying, “He doesn’t know everything. My idea is great,” his feedback always sticks in my head. That leads me to ask more people for their opinions, which usually leads me to his same conclusion, which usually saves me and the company some big $$$. Sometimes when I ignore his advice I lose tens of thousands of dollars. Not listening can be EXPENSIVE!
The point to this story is that as an entrepreneur it’s super important to have a mentor and someone you can trust. You want to find someone who’s self-made that you can talk to. I don’t have a therapist or a shrink. I have friends who have been there, done that, lost it, and come back swinging for the fences. Every entrepreneur needs those friends. I hope you’ve got them! If not, join local entrepreneur groups! I did!
