SafeGraph Abortion Clinic Location Data For Sale Overview:

  • Who: The location data firm SafeGraph allegedly sells information related to visits to clinics that offer abortion services.
  • Why: The data is said to include where groups of individuals came from, how long they stayed at the clinic and where they went afterwards.
  • Where: The data reportedly comprises clinics, including Planned Parenthood, nationwide.

Location Data Firm SafeGraph has been allegedly selling information related to visits to clinics that offer abortion services, such as Planned Parenthood.

The information is said to include where groups of individuals came from, how long they remained at the clinic and where they went afterwards, Vice reports

Vice’s Motherboard says it purchased a week’s worth of location data from more than 600 Planned Parenthood locations for just over $160. Planned Parenthood itself has no role in the location tracking nor is it benefitting from it financially in any way, Vice reports.

News of the alleged for-sale location data comes on the heels of a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion indicating the court is preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade, which provides federal protections to women looking to have an abortion.

If the Supreme Court was to overturn Roe v. Wade it would immediately make abortion fully or partially illegal in at least 13 states, Vice reports.

Abortion Clinic Location Data Available to Anyone on Open Market, Vice Says

VIce reports the location data is available for sale to anyone on the open market, meaning it could fall into the hands of anti-abortion groups and anti-abortion vigilantes, among others.

SafeGraph obtains location data by taking it from ordinary apps installed on an individual’s phone that contain a code that sends a user’s location to an outside company, Vice reports. It is not always clear to the consumer that an app contains location tracking nor that it is being sent to a third party.

Once it receives the location data, SafeGraph, which in June was banned from the Google Play Store, repackages it into a number of different products for sale, Vice reports.

SafeGraph then aggregates the location data, selling it by the group rather than the individual. However, Vice reports that some of the data sets Motherboard purchased contained a “very small number of devices per record.”

Earlier this month, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention allegedly purchased the location data of tens of millions of Americans phones in order to track pandemic lockdown compliance, among other things.
