Medical data conceptPatients who used the home healthcare provider CareCentrix may have been affected by an American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA) data breach of medical billing information. AMCA handles the collections billing for many medical labs, including CareCentrix, LabCorp, Quest Diagnostics, and others.

CareCentrix Data Breach

The AMCA data breach took place over an eight-month period and may affect around 20 million patients from multiple providers, including CareCentrix, a home healthcare provider servicing patients in Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, and New York.

While many patients whose data was affected by the CareCentrix data breach may have been sent a notification from the company alerting them to this breach, other patients may be unaware that their personal information was compromised. If you were a CareCentrix patient, your data may have been affected by this breach, even if you did not receive a notice from the home healthcare provider.

According to one patient, he is 99 percent sure that his family medical records were compromised by the breach, including blood tests and MRI and CT scans. Florian W. of New Jersey spoke to USA Today about his concerns regarding the data breach that may have exposed his wife’s history of cancer. “I get insurance from work,” he said, “But if I were to quit there, I’d have to get my own insurance. If someone knows that my wife is taking tests like this, for health insurance or anything, would we be denied?”

Consequences of Data Breaches

Many types of information may have been compromised by the data breach
, according to reports, including medical testing, patient medical histories, and patient personal information such as addresses, birthdates, and dates of care. In addition to medical information, the data breach may also have compromised other personal information including Social Security numbers and financial data.

Victims whose personal information was compromised may be subject to hacking, financial exploitation, identity theft, and other problems, according to a report by CBS Baltimore.

Hackers may be able to use personal medical data to conduct phishing, a type of hacking where hackers use sensitive information to pretend to be a credible company associated with the victim. Phishing often takes the form of emails from that look like legitimate companies, seeking to confirm patient information. Hackers who use phishing attempt to convince victims to hand over even more personal information unknowingly.

Some experts are also concerned that medical data breaches may lead to hackers blackmailing patients by threatening to expose their medical histories unless they pay a fee. Additional concerns regarding the data breach include whether patients with pre-existing conditions will have trouble obtaining future insurance.

Victims who were affected by the CareCentrix breach may be eligible for 24 months of free credit monitoring through the AMCA if their social security number or credit card account information was exposed. Victims may also be eligible to hire an attorney and pursue a class action lawsuit against CareCentrix and the AMCA to pursue compensation for damages caused by the data breach.
