  • Why: Riot Games attributed the data breach to a social engineering attack that affected systems in its development environment.
  • Where: Riot Games makes video games that consumers nationwide play.

Video game developer Riot Games says it will postpone game patches after it suffered a data breach last week.

Riot Games, in a Tweet posted last week, blamed the data breach on a social engineering attack while promising to keep its customers posted during its investigation into the apparent incident.

“Unfortunately, this has temporarily affected our ability to release content. While our teams are working hard on a fix, we expect this to impact our upcoming patch cadence across multiple games,” Riot Games tweeted.

The Los Angeles-based company also reassured its customers that it found no indication that any player data or personal information had been improperly obtained and that it was “working hard on a fix.”

“Please be patient with us as we work through this, and we’ll keep you posted as we continue our investigation,” Riot Games tweeted

Riot Games data breach expected to affect upcoming patches across multiple games, company says

Riot Games is the developer and publisher of the video games League of Legends (LoL) and Valorant. The development teams for LoL and Teamfight Tactics confirmed the data breach last week, Bleeping Computer reported

In addition to the current patch postponements, Riot Games warned that the data breach is expected to affect the company’s ability to “impact our upcoming patch cadence across multiple games.”

“This may impact our delivery date for Patch 13.2. The League team is working to stretch the limits of what we can hotfix in order to deliver the majority of the planned and tested balance changes on time still,” the LoL team tweeted

Riot Games agreed to pay $100 million last year to resolve claims the company discriminated against its female employees and temporary contract workers.

The company was accused of fostering a hostile work environment that saw female employees face sexual harassment and retaliation, as well as in discrimination with pay, promotions, hiring and other employment practices.
