  • Where: Dallas, Texas.

The city of Dallas suffered a data breach that compromised the personal information of more than 26,000 individuals during a ransomware attack against the city’s systems in early May, according to city officials.

In a notice to the attorney general’s office made public Monday, city officials said the data breach included names, addresses, medical information, Social Security numbers and health insurance information, among other things.

The data breach has hindered city services — including public safety departments and the public library systems — since Dallas officials disclosed the incident to the public May 3, Law360 reports.

Dallas had reportedly previously held that the event did not expose any personal information, despite the hacking group who claimed responsibility for the incident threatening to leak stolen data in mid-May.

The hacking group, Royal, said at the time it had stolen “tons of personal information” belonging to city employees, with the city now confirming it determined that some files containing sensitive information had been accessed, according to Law360.

Dallas reportedly previously disclosed it had learned that benefits-related information that was being kept by its human resources department had been exposed during the ransomware attack.

The city is offering individuals affected by the data breach two years of free credit monitoring as a precautionary option, while maintaining it has not found any instances of fraud or identity theft stemming from the data breach.

“We encourage impacted individuals to activate these services, as the city is not able to act on your behalf to activate them for you,” the city said in an update posted on its website last week.

A number of class action lawsuits have recently been filed against businesses and health care providers accused of failing to prevent the personal information and/or private health information of customers and/or patients from becoming exposed during a data breach.
