Update:

  • A Louisiana judge dismissed a plaintiff’s proposed class action lawsuit against Caesars Entertainment Inc.’s Horseshoe Bossier City casino that alleged the casino skimmed patrons’ change when they cashed out of slot machines.
  • Plaintiff Mike Young claimed the casino shortchanged him several times in 2021, at about 99 cents each time, because the casino’s kiosks cash out to the nearest dollar.
  • U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter wrote in his opinion that Young’s complaint wouldn’t meet the $75,000 financial threshold for a federal court complaint and multiple parties cannot join to satisfy that amount.
  • Even if the threshold was met, Judge Walter wrote, Caesars as a parent company cannot be held liable for its subsidiaries’ acts.

(Sept. 28, 2022)

Caesars Entertainment robs players at its casinos “a few cents at a time” by essentially keeping the change “off of hundreds of thousands if not millions of Gaming Vouchers,” a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Mike Young claims Caesars effectively taxes players at its casinos by “manipulating the cash-out system employed by their electronic gaming systems.”

Young argues Caesars’ cash-out kiosks round down to the nearest dollar when paying a player who cashes out a slot machine gaming voucher.

In addition to the cash, Caesars cash-out kiosks provide players with a “simple Ticket Redemption receipt” that provides “no further direction” and “left gamers without further option,” the Caesars casino class action alleges.

“The Kiosk simply kept the change,” the lawsuit states.

Caesars casino class action allegedly fails to notify players it will keep change on gaming vouchers

In addition to not giving players their change, Young argues Caesars also fails to “put an average player on reasonable notice that Gaming Voucher would be rounded down and that the Kiosk would simply keep a player’s change.”

“Upon information and belief, Plaintiff is similarly situated with hundreds of thousands of Casino patrons who have been deprived, little by little, of millions of dollars since Defendant’s adoption of its no-change policy,” the Caesars casino class action states.

Young claims Caesars is guilty of breach of contract, conversion and unjust enrichment. He demands a jury trial and requests class certification and a judgment in favor of himself and all class members.

Young wants to represent a nationwide class of individuals who attended a Caesars-owned or -operated casino since Sept. 23, 2012, and who was “deprived of their change” by the entertainment company.

A similar class action lawsuit was filed against MGM Resorts International earlier this month by a consumer arguing the casino operator refuses to refund cash change to players attempting to cash-out gaming vouchers.
