Zithromax is the most popularly prescribed antibiotic in the United States, due in part to its short prescription requirement. However, it is the drug’s popularity that has physicians and medical experts concerned.
Due to its massive popularity, Zithromax is often prescribed when it is not suited to treat a patient’s condition. Because patients are enticed by the possibility of taking an antibiotic for a shorter duration of time, they often ask for the drug without thinking much of the consequences. The primary consequence of this behavior is that it may unnecessarily expose patients to potentially dangerous side effects.
According to a recent medical report released in The Wall Street Journal on Aug. 9, 2013, reports of Zithromax complications have been rising, possibly due to overprescription of the medication. This overuse leads to less effective treatment for situations in which the drug is actually needed, and makes the patient more prone to the serious Zithromax side effects. In the previous year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) publicly announced that Zithromax may cause irregular heart rhythms in patients, which may lead to cardiac arrest.
Overview of Zithromax Complications
Zithromax is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, typhoid, bronchitis and sinusitis. The drug works be preventing bacteria from regenerating or reproducing by inhibiting protein synthesis.
While praised widely as a success by most, many medical experts caution against Zithromax being prescribed too often due to the possibility of severe side effects associated with the drug. Below is a list of slight to severe side effects caused by Zithromax. This is not a complete list, and those who are experiencing side effects should consult their doctors immediately.
