Toyota recall overview:
- Who: Toyota is recalling approximately 74,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs.
- Why: The Toyota recall is due to an insufficient pedestrian warning sound when the vehicle is in reverse.
- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Toyota is recalling around 74,000 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs from model years 2023 to 2025.
The issue arises because the pedestrian warning sound, which is supposed to alert pedestrians of the vehicle’s presence, may not be loud enough when the car is reversing.
This shortcoming means the vehicles do not meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 141, which mandates minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.
The recall notice was issued on March 31 stating: “Insufficient pedestrian warning sounds may fail to alert pedestrians of a reversing vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.”
Toyota addresses pedestrian safety concerns with software update
Toyota plans to notify owners by late May 2026, instructing them to visit a Toyota dealer to have the sound software updated at no cost.
“Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by late May and instructed to return their vehicles to a Toyota dealer to get the sound’s software updated for free,” the Toyota recall notice says.
The update will ensure that the pedestrian warning sound meets the required standards, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
