Tesla recall overview:
- Who: Tesla is recalling more than 218,000 vehicles, including Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y.
- Why: The rearview camera image may be delayed, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Tesla is recalling 218,868 vehicles due to a potential delay in the rearview camera image when the vehicle is placed in reverse.
The delay in the camera image could hinder the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a collision, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This issue affects several models, specifically those using hardware version 3, and includes 2017, 2021-2023 Model 3, 2020-2023 Model Y, and 2021-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles.
The recall was announced on May 6, 2026, and affects vehicles operating on software version 2026.8.6. Tesla advises drivers to perform a shoulder check and use their mirrors while reversing until a software update is applied.
Tesla to release free over-the-air software update
Tesla has addressed the issue by releasing a free over-the-air software update, which began rolling out on April 11 before the official recall was announced.
The update is designed to correct the delay in the rearview camera image. According to Tesla, the problem software version is 2026.8.6, and the remedy version is 2026.8.6.1.
For more information about the recall, car owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, citing Tesla recall number SB-26-00-016. Additionally, owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by July 3, 2026.
Tesla has reported no injuries or fatalities related to the issue, although there have been 27 warranty claims and two field reports potentially connected to the problem. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Meanwhile, Tesla is facing a class action lawsuit concerning an alleged faulty door handle on Model S vehicles, which a car owner claims can create a “death trap” during collisions or fires.
