Samsung TV Capacitor Class Action Settlement

By Sarah Pierce

Samsung
Samsung has reached a class action lawsuit settlement resolving allegations it sold defective televisions that cause a number of problems. If you purchased a Samsung LCD, Plasma or DLP television manufactured prior to December 31, 2008, you may be able to claim up to $650 under the Samsung TV class action settlement.
The Samsung TV settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Russell, et al. v., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., that alleges Samsung manufactured and sold certain Samsung-branded televisions that contain a capacitor defect that cause the televisions to experience symptoms such as not turning on, experiencing a delay in turning on, making a clicking sound, cycling on and off, or other similar problems (the “Covered TV Symptoms”).
Samsung denies the allegations in the class action lawsuit, but has agreed to settle the case to avoid ongoing litigation.
The television models covered under the Samsung TV capacitor settlement are:
Samsung LCD TV Serial Numbers: LN-T******/XAA; LN**A******XZA; LNS4041DX/XAA; LNS4051DX/XAA; LNS4052DX/XAA; LNS5296DX/XAA
Samsung Plasma TV Serial Numbers: HPT5034X/XAA; HPT5044X/XAA; HPT5054X/XAA; HPT5064X/XAA; PN42A410C1DXZA; PN42A450P1DXZA; PN50A410C1DXZA; PN50A450P1DXZA; PN50A460S4DXZA
Samsung DLP TV Serial Numbers: HLT5087SAX/XAA; HLT5087SX/XAA; HLT5089SAX/XAA; HLT5089SX/XAA; HLT5687SAX/XAA; HLT5687SX/XAA; HLT5689SAX/XAA; HLT5689SX/XAA; HLT6187SAX/XAA; HLT6187SX/XAA; HLT6189SAX/XAA; HLT6189SX/XAA
If you own one of these Samsung TVs and experienced one or more of the Covered TV Symptoms listed above, or if you experience a Covered TV Symptom within 18 months after March 2, 2012, you can claim one of the following benefits from the Samsung TV class action lawsuit settlement:
(1) A free service visit to determine if your TV has a problem covered by the class action settlement and, if it does, to fix the problem. You must call (888) 899-7602 within 18 months from March 2, 2012 to receive this settlement benefit. If your TV requires more than one repair for a capacitor issue covered by the class action settlement, you will receive an additional $50 payment.
(2) A refund of expenses you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012, to evaluate or diagnose the problem covered by the class action settlement (up to $150). You must submit proof that your TV has a Covered TV Symptom (such as a receipt, bill cancelled check or credit card charge, correspondence, verification from repair provider) before March 2, 2013 to receive this settlement benefit.
(3) A refund of expenses you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012, to fix the problem covered by the class action settlement (up to $150 to fix the capacitor issue or $300 if the repair included replacing a power supply board). You can also receive up to $150 to cover shipping expenses, including insurance costs, you incurred to fix the TV. You must submit a claim form and proof that your TV had a capacitor issue by March 2, 2013 to receive this settlement benefit.
(4) A $300 debit card if you reported to Samsung, prior to March 2, 2012, the problem covered by the class action settlement, but did not get it fixed, and you no longer possess your TV. You must submit a claim form and proof that you purchased a TV within 90 days of March 2, 2012 to get this settlement benefit.
In other words, a customer who repaired the set may receive up to $600 for diagnosis, repairs, and shipping, plus $50 if they need more repairs; while a customer who no longer has the set can still receive up to $450 for diagnosis and compensation.

contacted Samsung for repairs ,purchased 5/10/2008,they made an appointment with local tv company, they wanted $160.00 , claimed no warranty from Samsung, I followed up with Samsung, it was a waste of time, Please don’t purchase Samsung products, they need to learn the sale is only as good as the service.

My 52″ LCD (model LN52A630M1FXZA) is cycling on/off while clicking between each cycle, and has continued doing so for several days now. I called Samsung and although my symptoms and model number match the ones listed in this suit, they claim that they are not responsible because my unit was manufactured after 2008. I am therefore seeking further legal action against Samsung and like hopefully many others will NEVER consider buying or recommending any other Samsung product to absolutely anyone else in the future due to Samsung’s DENIAL of LIABILITY and decision to severely limit the scope of customer support to a mere fraction of their affected consumers. I am quite often asked for electronic recommendations from a great number of corporate professionals as well as friends and family for a vast array of computer and mobile electronic devices which my career in IT deals with each and every day, and I must now honestly and strongly advise AGAINST ANY device which displays the SAMSUNG brand name. What has SAMSUNG shown us by this action – that they only care about minimizing customer support through maximizing profit at the expense of their former customers! So please remember, JUST SAY NO TO SAMSUNG!!

  3. Michelle Clark says:

I called Samsung about my 60 led tv powering itself on and off in frequent cycles and they said there is nothing thy can do for me because my tv was manufactured in the spring of 2010 and they are only covering compactors covered prior to 2008. After researching this problem, I am finding out it could be a motherboard issue as well as a capacitor/power source problem. After paying 2400 for this product, I am extremely dissatisfied with their lack of customer support. The customer service lady at Samsung said it should be expected in electronics. i will never purchase another Samsung tv again!

i have a dlp model #hlt6187sx/xaa and when I contacted samsung and requested a technician from samsung do an onsite evaluation, they refused witheir reason being that this model is not part of the class action settlement. I believe that the entire circuit board needs to be replaced. does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

  5. James Neph says:

Well I called Samsung about my white dot problem on my HLT6756WX/XAA and was told they will not help me. I really don’t understand how Samsung can cover only select models when all the the DLP tv’s they made seem to have the same issue. I will fix it myself but when I need to buy another TV or appliance I will not ever purchase another Samsung product again.

Our TV is one of the ones in the settlement, but we haven’t had a problem with the capacitor yet. We do however had the white dots on the screen. I wonder if there needs to be another class action suit for that?

I had bought A large screen Samsung flat screen costing $3000.00 from Sams Club in 2008. Only a few days after the warranty expires. The Geek Squad from Best Buy comes out and states that the TV will cost you a lot to have fixed and it is better for you to go and purchase a new one. I felt that buying this Samsung TV from Sams club was deceitful. When I asked Sams Club what I should do they said basically to bad for you. This is why The Geek Squad from Best Buy had to come out to look at the television.

    1. Oh Lord says:

They told you it’s better to buy a new TV (let me guess, from Best Buy?)..which 99% is a fix that can be made using $0.50 in parts. It’s a couple of bulged caps, a routine repair for any halfway versed electronic shop or even amateur. /shakes head

I had same problem, called Samsung service and they setup service.he just came today and replaced couple part ,now working properly and no charge.thnx Samsung

    1. shelly says:

Beware, in a few years it will fail again. That is what happened to us. The part they put in was probably the same faulty part.
