Samsung refrigeratorA design defect in Samsung refrigerators causes the coils to freeze over, leaving the refrigerator unable to remain cold enough to keep food from spoiling, according to a class action lawsuit filed in New Jersey. The lawsuit estimates thousands of U.S. consumers have purchased the defective refrigerators since 2005, and that consumers have suffered hundreds of dollar in damages from lost groceries and repairs caused by the alleged defect.

According to the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit, “The refrigerators are designed and manufactured with heated coils that are intended to prevent excess frost from developing in the back of the machine. Instead of preventing frost, however, the coils allow frost and ice to build up in the refrigerators until the ice clogs and/or disables the machine’s fans, making it impossible for the fans to work to keep the machine cool.”

The alleged defect not only renders the refrigerators unusable, but also poses a safety risk to consumers because it leads to food spoilage and the risk of food-borne illnesses. Further enhancing consumers’ risk of illness is the fact that many of the refrigerators falsely display on the exterior temperature reader that the inside of the fridge is at a standard cool temperature.

The class action lawsuit alleges the defect exists in all three varieties of refrigerators Samsung manufactures, including its French door, side-by-side and bottom freezer varieties, and the model numbers:

  • RF266AASH
  • RS263BBWP
  • RB1955SH
  • RS2533SW
  • RS267LASH
  • RS267TDRS
  • RS2630WW

The lawsuit further charges that “Samsung sold and serviced the refrigerators even though it knew, or was reckless in not knowing, that the refrigerators were defectively designed, would fail prematurely, and would ultimately result in [class members’] inability to use their refrigerators for their intended purpose.”

This is the second class action lawsuit filed in two months over defective refrigerators causing food spoilage. A class action lawsuit filed in July alleges LG’s French door refrigerator models contain a defect that causes the interior light to stay on after the doors are closed, resulting in overheating, food spoilage, melted plastic and fire hazard.

The Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit is seeking damages, restitution and other awards for class members. A copy of the lawsuit can be read here.

UPDATE: On September 3, 2015, the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit was dismissed.

Having same noise as everyone describes I haven’t tried the temporary fix that is on YouTube. It’s insane that they sell this crap. I bought it at Lowe’s, it was a second one because the fridgidare had a noise problem too. Do they not make a decent refrigerator anymore?

  3. Lisa Dixon says:

I am having same problems. Freezer stopped working. Then the frig part leaked water and got hot. More than once.

  4. Jimbo says:

Our 10 year old major brand french door fridge gave up the ghost and our service person told us repairs would be over $800 and to just buy a new unit. We went to Lowes and purchased the Samsung French Door bottom freezer unit. 5 months later Ice maker quit. 2 days later freezer thawed all of our food ,and within a few days of that fridge temp rose to over 61 degrees. Contacted Samsung via our warranty and was given the run around. 5 months, @ 2k for the fridge that’s $400/ month seems kinda like a rip off. Right?

  5. Huey S. says:

ME TOOOOO!!!!!! I purchased mine in Jan 2014, bought a 5 year extended warranty and is warm in all cooling areas. Over $3,000!! Samsung saying sorry, out of warranty.

      1. Geofff Ziegler says:

And Huey, I did shut power off to “ unfreeze fan” for 4 hours ,then did everything they said, and nothing!! I can still hear either fan or compressor, but no cooling.

  6. Cecile says:

How can I join this class action suit?

  7. Vivek Sharma says:

I have exactly the same issue with my Samsung French door refrigerator (RF30HBEDBSR/AA). The ice keeps blocking the fan and I have spent hundreds of dollars on technicians. I found hundreds of articles and videos explaining that this is a wide spread issue with Samsung refrigerators.

Why was this case dropped? I’ll never buy a Samsung product again.

    1. Cecile says:

This is DISGUSTING!!! I am having the same exact problem!!

  8. Jayne Buteau says:

Our Samsung refrigerator did the same thing. I was constantly de-icing the inside, the freezer and the ice maker. We had so much spoilage we stopped using it very much. We didn’t have any frozen food for months. I need to eat healthy fresh fruits and vegetables for health reasons. They spoiled so quickly. I had to eat them in a day or two. At other time, the main section froze the food. It was very hard to maintain access to fresh food. The freezer would freeze so much we couldn’t get the door open. Then it would start to start to melt and spoiled what as in there. We woke up to flooding in the kitchen. We had a Sears person come 2 or 3 times to work on it.
Finally we decided to get a new one which we couldn’t afford. Luckily, my brother’s friend was redoing her kitchen and was giving away her appliances. He told us she had previously bought the Samsung frig and has the same issues. She received a refund them bought the one we have now. We forgot how well refrigerators work. Our fresh food last so much longer and we can use the freezer. I was so happy to get rid of it. The Samsung is still in our garage. We had it for less than 5 years.

  9. Tasheka Gardner-McClinton says:

SAME PROBLEM!!! PLEASE REOPEN THIS CASE!!! WE HAVE SPENT OVER $1000 TO GET THIS FRIDGE FIXED!!!

    1. Connie R says:

Same here, why did Samsung cheat so many people? They refuse to acknowledge this problem but are happy keeping our money.

  10. Lakesish Miller says:

I have a samsung french style refrigerator with the bottom freezer. Noticed it wasn’t cooling and the temperature went up to 65 degrees. Had a repairman come out to fix it and cost.me around 350.00. It still did the same thing. So found out it needed a back panel but repairman was unable to fix the back panel because they don’t make any parts for this refrigerator anymore. Said it was best to buy a new refrigerator after having this one for a couple of years. A piece of crap. Never will buy a samsung again. Go back to the old style refrigerator like a side by side one or something. A total waste of money and food from this samsung!!! Need to open a case for this!!!
