Philips/Magnavox Plasma TV Class Action Settlement

By Kimberly Mirando

Philips Electronics
A proposed class action lawsuit settlement has been reached involving certain Philips and Magnavox plasma televisions that allegedly contain defective parts. The proposed plasma television class action settlement will provide vouchers and/or partial cash refunds to certain consumers who submit timely, valid claim forms.
The Philips and Magnavox plasma TV settlement will resolve a consolidated class action lawsuit, entitled In re: Philips/Magnavox Television Litigation, that alleged certain flat screen televisions sold by Philips Electronics North America Corporation suffer from a design defect that causes internal components (called capacitators) to prematurely fail, resulting in the televisions becoming inoperable.
Philips manufactured and sold plasma flat screen televisions under the “Philips” and “Magnavox” brand names at major electronics retailers in the United States until 2008, when it exited the domestic consumer television business in the U.S. Philips denies any wrongdoing but has agreed to end the litigation by creating a class action settlement fund to pay out benefits to Class Members.
Class Members of the Philips plasma TV class action settlement include anyone who purchased new or received as a gift a new Philips or Magnavox plasma television in the U.S. containing one of the following model numbers with a serial number reflecting a manufacturing date between November 1, 2005 through December 31, 2006:
50PF9830A/37

Class Members  have been divided into five categories, with each category entitled to a different level of benefits from the proposed Philips/Magnavox plasma TV settlement. Your settlement benefits will depend on the following:
* Whether you previously contacted Philips to complain about the problems at issue in this case.
* Whether your Philips Plasma TV exhibited a problem with capacitors on the power supply board.
* Whether you previously paid to have your Philips Plasma TV repaired due to a problem with capacitors on the power supply board.
* Whether you already obtained any refund from a Philips-related entity or any retailer for your Philip Plasma TV(s). Anyone that has already obtained any refund from a Philips- related entity or a retailer in connection with the Philips Plasma TV(s) for which the Settlement Class Members seek relief here is excluded from the Settlement Class.
Depending on which class action settlement category you fall under, you can file a claim to receive a settlement voucher worth up to $145 or $160, or a cash payment of $55 or $65 for each new Philips plasma TV you purchased or received if you can provide proof of purchase/receipt. If you do not have proof, you can file a claim to receive a voucher for either 20%, 30% or 50% of the settlement money that corresponds to the category you fall under.
To receive a voucher or cash payment under the Philips plasma TV class action settlement, you must submit a valid claim form and the requested paperwork about your claim by February 28, 2012. Claim forms and more information about how to determine which settlement category you fall under can be found at www.PhilipsPlasmaTVSettlement.com.

looking into this because and then realizing the dates for any action have already come to a close?!! I have one of the lemons that are described here and like many I paid over$1500 for the television and within the first 2 years had problems and paid out over $650 dollars to fix it. Six months after having it fixed I have now lived with half a screen and a green line that runs through the picture.
Does a $65 refund, that had such a limited window of opportunity and limited reach to those who really truly got screwed by this company, suffice as true customer service by the Phillips company shame on the lawyers for wasting time and money

After the hastle of doing paperwork I received a voucher for only
    $30.00 to settlle a repair of $500.00. I can’t believe how such a
wealthy multinational corporation could care so little about their
customers happiness. I’m through with Buying ANYTHING made by Phillips.

I had the same thing happened. Have tried many on-line retailers, Amazon, Ebay, etc and no one will accept the voucher. The Outlet store is out of he product I want and has a very small assortment of items (at 70 years old, I don’t need Avent products!). Where do I use this voucher?????

Recieved my voucher to use for Philips product. Was happy to use it after the huge ordeal of paperwork but am finding that the voucher will not be honored at retailers because they are not sure what it is. Tried at 3 different locations that sold Philips products which is a struggle becuase many local retailers do not carry Philips. Have left multiple messages on the contact number on voucher and no one will return call. Someone made money on this settlement however I don’t believe it to be the consumers impacted by the recalled tvs that we spent money on to get fixed. Very disappointing.

I filled out the proper paperwork in between the guidelines and have yet to hear anything, had to come on here to find out. Purchased the TV new, paid to have it repaired and 2 days later it went out. And to think the TV orginally cost $1800 and to have it fixed an additional $300…what a rip off! Will never buy Philips again! They aren’t even trying to make things right with customers. So much for keeping business Philips.

I registered my Television with the company and I bought a warranty that lasted 4 years.
The televsion was repaired 3 times.
The screen turned back on March 13, 2012, still have sound, I have no warranty and I cannot afford to have it fixed a fourth time.
I did not received any notification about a class action suit. Why wasn’t it may public??

TV buckled back in May. Screen went black except for a splatter spot near the lower right side of the screen that would glow red and flash back to dim repeatedly. My Model isnt listed because it’s a 42 but it is listed as a 50 inch. I hope I’m not screwed.
