Pella ProLine WindowsPella Corporation has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over alleged defects in its ProLine series of windows that allegedly cause rotting in the surrounding wood. If approved, the class action settlement will cover a nationwide Class of consumers who purchased ProLine casement, awning and transom windows made by Pella from 1991 to 2006.

Under the proposed class action lawsuit settlement, consumers may be eligible to receive between $750 and $6,000. The Pella ProLine settlement also provides benefits beyond the warranty to consumers whose windows may suffer wood rot in the future.

Lead Plaintiff Dr. Leonard Saltzman sued Pella in 2006 alleging that he began to notice some of his window frames were rotting 10 years after installing ProLine casement windows in his new home, but the windows were no longer under warranty. Saltzman alleged the windows had a design defect that allows water to seep behind the aluminum cladding and cause wood rot.

Pella denies the allegations and maintains wood rot can be caused by many different reasons, but said in a statement last week that it is “pleased to have created a settlement framework that extends our existing customer support program with a claims process” for older windows.

“In the overwhelming majority of cases, our Pella windows performed extremely well and as designed,” Pella’s CEO said. “We know that each home or building is unique and the settlement is designed to address the relatively small number that may have experienced a problem.”

We purchased these pella windows in 1998, we have had some wood rot, are we eligible to participate in the settlement and, if so, how do we go about that? Thanks

we have a home in Michigan that has 2 sets of 9 foot sliders and the wood is completely rotten at the bottom of all the panes – We had the pella rep out and he said there was nothing they could do – Does anyone know who to contact about the class action suit to see if this issue is part of the suit
    thank you

We live in Pella. Bought a home built in 1992 which had Proline windows. Most leak and suffer some signs of condensation/leaking … was told it was “installation problem” … which we do not believe. It’s a reason why many local contractors will not install Pella Windows, even in tthe company’s hometown.

Our large bank of sun room windows (yr. 2000) have some problems with water getting inside the glass divisions, one even running onto the sill and down to the floor in heavier rain. We believe it’s an aluminum clad on exterior wood problem, like many other reports in the class action suit; getting a rep to investigate this, much less admint any possible product fault, is next to impossible.

Pella is a great local corporate citizen; it has enjoyed a marvelous reputation, rightfully so, until the last 15 years or so. Disappointing.

The company needs to clean up its customer relations and get rid of vague company line excuses spewed by the associate vendors.).

I agree. When I called to talk to a Pella rep regarding my 13 rotted Windows and 1 door in 2010, Architect series, I asked the rep if she had ever heard of this happening to such an extent . Her answer was I can’t say I have; on the other hand I can’t say I haven’t !!! What is that??

I have horrible unusual deterioration in the sill regarding my sliding glass door. I tried over five months to get tell it to reasonably deal with this to no avail. They even sent one of their inspectors who remarked that this deterioration was highly unusual. A month later they still refuse to do anything. I was wondering if anyone is aware if the sliding glass door is also covered under the recent class-action lawsuit as the deterioration seems very similar.

I built a 200 sq ft home in 2001 and put Pella Pro-Line windows and 2 sliding doors in the home. I just had a sash rot out in one of the windows and i need to replace prior to winter. I am also starting to see weather issues with the other windows to include mold. I am going to contact the place of purchase (84 lumber) for assistance. Upon purchasing the windows and doors we were told that Pella was top of the line. Hopefullu Pella will stand behind thier product. If anyone has any other suggestions please respond.

Built new home in 1999 and Installed Pro-line windows and Pella doors. Eight years later, realized that leakage in kitchen ceiling that had been going on for several years, was coming from large window in room directly above. Pella charged us a $95 service charge to come out and caulk the window. Never mentioned that water marks on sill were due to interior wood rot. Two years later, when warrenty was up, it started leaking again. Now the sill on another window has completely rotted off and must be replaced immediately. Ten other windows are also showing signs of wood rot. Also have two doors that leak.

Alvin, what make and model of replacement window did you use. These were casement windows…right?

We built a large 2 story home with a walk-out basement in 2001. Use all Pella doors and Pro-line windows. We have had to replace 1 door (patio slider) and 8 windows due to rot. Pella has been good to work with but we are now out of warranty on the remainder and some show signs of rot. Have spent hundreds on the labor to have them installed.
