Pella Corporation has reached a class action lawsuit settlement over alleged defects in its ProLine series of windows that allegedly cause rotting in the surrounding wood. If approved, the class action settlement will cover a nationwide Class of consumers who purchased ProLine casement, awning and transom windows made by Pella from 1991 to 2006.
Under the proposed class action lawsuit settlement, consumers may be eligible to receive between $750 and $6,000. The Pella ProLine settlement also provides benefits beyond the warranty to consumers whose windows may suffer wood rot in the future.
Lead Plaintiff Dr. Leonard Saltzman sued Pella in 2006 alleging that he began to notice some of his window frames were rotting 10 years after installing ProLine casement windows in his new home, but the windows were no longer under warranty. Saltzman alleged the windows had a design defect that allows water to seep behind the aluminum cladding and cause wood rot.
Pella denies the allegations and maintains wood rot can be caused by many different reasons, but said in a statement last week that it is “pleased to have created a settlement framework that extends our existing customer support program with a claims process” for older windows.
“In the overwhelming majority of cases, our Pella windows performed extremely well and as designed,” Pella’s CEO said. “We know that each home or building is unique and the settlement is designed to address the relatively small number that may have experienced a problem.”

I have a Pella door that seems to have the same problem. Is it covered by this lawsuit?
I had 22 Proline windows installed in 1996 & had major issues the very first winter they were installed. Pella reps confirmed a design flaw but would not replace them. I wound up replacing them saving 2/3 on my heat bill by ‘only’ replacing the windows, not speaking of the deteriorating wood wrapped in metal.
Milford CT: Purchased ten ProLine windows in 1999 and the bottom of the sashes rotted out on two. Contacted Pella in July and a rep inspected them on Aug 6, 2012. Pella to provide a quote for replacement. He mentioned labor for installing the replacements would be 1 to 1.5 hours at $160 per hour. Then he asked if Pella had told me about the service charge to inspect the windows. His work order showed $160, but he explained Pella normally charges $75. I explained there was no mention of an insperction charge when I called in so he waived the charge without further discussion. Very strange. Now it’s wait and see how Pella responds.
I contacted Pella in Auburn Hills MI about a problem with my Proline windows. They scheduled a rep to inspect my windows and acknowledged I had 10 damaged sashes. They gave me a date they would replace and were here as scheduled and did a nice job at absolutely no cost to me. So as far as I’m concerned, Pella has acknowledged the problem, fixed the problem and I am completely satisfied with Pella’s response.
God, I hope my windows are not affected
I just had Pella repair some of my proline windows. I paid $700.00 + and want to be notified about this class action.
I purchased pella windows in 200l. Several of the windows have rotted out and need to be replaced. Who do I contact to get replacement for these. Thanks for any info.
I purchased my Pella windows in 2011. There have been out twice to repair trim. Am I qualified to be in a future suit
A representative from pella inspected our sashes a couple of years back. Five of them were rotted. He himself said that it was a design problem. They replaced them for free. I stained and sealed and installed them myself to save labor cost. I will look at the rest of them to see if there are more.
We thought we were not skimping on our windows when we purchased Pella for our brand new custom home. We had a couple windows rot a few years ago; Pella replaced. Now a year OUT of warranty we have 3 more that have rotted. Pella doesn’t care that this was an on-going problem. We had to pay over $500 for these three windows to be replaced + they wanted another $400 to install them! Hope this lawsuit goes through!
