Type-2 diabetes patients are alleging serious Onglyza injury across the country, with reports ranging from serious pancreatic damage to heart failure.
Patients who allegedly suffered a serious Onglyza injury, may be able to file legal action against the manufacturing company for failing to warn them against these complications.
Onglyza (saxagliptin) was approved by the FDA in 2009, and quickly became a popular choice for type-2 diabetes patients for its treatment mechanism.
Its popularity stemmed from the drug’s ability to control blood sugar levels, while not causing weight gain like many other diabetes treatment medications.
Onglyza belongs to the incretin mimetic drug class, DPP-4 inhibitor specifically, which works by signaling the pancreas to manufacture more insulin and to prevent the liver from making excess sugar.
When incretin mimetics first appeared on the market, they were considered the “darlings” of diabetes treatment drugs due to the “breakthrough” treatment process.
In fact, these medications were toted as big of a discovery as insulin nearly one hundred years ago. However the FDA began investigating the potential complications associated with incretin mimetics in March 2013, analyzing the findings from research that discovered these medications increased the chances of cancerous cell growth.
Overview of Possible Onglyza Injury
Onglyza works by inhibiting the liver from releasing excess sugar, but also encouraging the pancreas to increase its insulin production to insure food is properly metabolized.
While this medication normally works well with healthy diet and exercise routine, Onglyza injury can strike in the pancreas and can be potentially fatal.
According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), patients who take Onglyza and other incretin mimetics may be more likely to develop pancreatic cancer. The FDA developed a similar stance after reviewing different studies and warned patients that incretin mimetics may carry an increased risk for pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis.
Heart failure has also been linked to Onglyza injury, with the FDA sending out an official warning in April 2015. The agency released the warning after reviewing data from the SAVOR study involving 16,000 patients.
The Onglyza patients were found to have a 27 percent increase risk of being hospitalized for heart failure compared to the control growth.
The goal of the study was to analyze Onglyza’s potential in cardiac benefits in addition to regulating blood sugar levels. While researchers found no evidence of supporting heart health, they did find that Onglyza injury could contribute to heart attack and increase the risk for heart failure.
Regardless of which Onglyza injury patients may have experienced, they can potentially seek compensation from the manufacturing company. Potential claimants should contact a specialized lawyer, to determine eligibility for an Onglyza lawsuit.
In general, Onglyza lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
