Mercedes-Benz Metris, Sprinter Recall Overview:
- Who: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued safety recall reports for certain Mercedes-Benz Metris and Sprinter vehicles.
- Why: The recalled vehicles have defects that could increase the risk of a crash.
- Where: The recall affects vehicles sold in the United States.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued two safety recall reports regarding certain Mercedes-Benz Metris and Sprinter vehicles, which may pose safety risks.
If you own or lease a Mercedes-Benz Metris or Sprinter vehicle, your vehicle may be affected by one of the recalls.
Mercedes-Benz Metris Brake Fluid Reservoir DefectÂ
On Feb.8, certain Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles were recalled due to an issue with the brake fluid reservoir. The brake fluid reservoirs in some of these vehicles may have been incorrectly mounted. As a result, the reservoir may detach from the mounting and cause it to leak brake fluid.Â
Loss of brake fluid can affect the ability to brake and increase the chance of a crash. Drivers of the affected vehicles may notice a gradual softening of brake pedal resistance, or the brake warning lamp in the instrument panel may become illuminated.
The brake fluid reservoir mounting defect affects certain model year 2016-2021 Mercedes-Benz VS20 Metris vehicles.
As part of the recall, Mercedes-Benz dealers will check to ensure that the brake fluid reservoir has been properly mounted. Dealers will reportedly be notified about the voluntary recall in March.
Approximately 28,700 Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles may be affected by the recall. The affected vehicles were reportedly produced between Mar. 31, 2015, and Oct. 12, 2021.
In October 2021, Mercedes-Benz began requiring a green verification check mark to be applied after a post-installation visual inspection and tensile test of the brake fluid reservoir.
No incidents related to the Metris brake fluid reservoir mounting defect were noted in the NHTSA safety recall report.
Sprinter Recalled Over Erroneous Tire Values, Loading Information Label
On Feb. 9, the NHTSA announced a recall of certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles that may have erroneous values on the tire and loading information label on the B-pillar, which may overstate the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
As a result, overloading the vehicle could exceed the permissible total weight for vehicle use. Over time, overloading can cause excessive tire wear and potentially lead to tire failure, which may increase the risk of a crash.
According to the NHTSA safety recall report, an authorized Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner dealer will check the tire and loading information label. They will replace it with a corrected label if necessary.
The dealer will also conduct a visual inspection of the tires for excessive wear and replace them if necessary.
Dealers will reportedly be notified about the voluntary Sprinter recall in March, and owners will be notified approximately one week after the dealers are notified.
The recalled Sprinter vehicles were reportedly produced from July 1, 2021, to Sept. 29, 2021.
Approximately 2,500 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles are affected by the recall.
No incidents related to the Sprinter tire and loading information mislabeling were reported in the NHTSA safety recall notice.
