Greenworks Tools recalls over 550K Kobalt yard tools due to battery hazard

Greenworks Tools is recalling more than half a million Kobalt yard power tools due to a potential fire hazard associated with their USB-C batteries. The recall affects various models of trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws and pruning saws.

The recall, announced on July 9, includes Kobalt tools equipped with 24V and 48V batteries featuring a USB-C charging port. These batteries, available in capacities ranging from 3.0Ah to 8.0Ah, can short-circuit when charged through the USB-C port while inserted in the tools, posing a significant fire risk.

The Kobalt recall affects products sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide and online from January 2026 through May 2026, with prices ranging from $20 to $482.

Greenworks Tools, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, is the importer of these products, which were manufactured in China and Vietnam.

Recall advises consumers to stop using affected Kobalt tools

“Consumers should stop charging the batteries with the USB-C port while the batteries are inserted in the yard power tools immediately and contact Greenworks Tools to receive a free replacement battery,” the recall notice states.

Greenworks Tools has received 34 reports of the batteries producing smoke, sparking or catching fire. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage have been reported.

According to the recall, Greenworks will provide affected consumers with a free replacement battery without a USB-C port, a charger adapter, a warning label, an updated product manual and a pre-paid shipping label for returning the recalled batteries.

Greenworks Tools says it has received 34 reports of batteries smoking, sparking or catching fire related to the recall, but no reports of any injuries so far.
