What is the gabapentin lawsuit investigation about?

Attorneys are investigating whether manufacturers of gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) failed to warn patients and healthcare providers about a potential connection between long-term use of these medications and dementia or cognitive impairment.

The investigation focuses on allegations that:

  • Drug manufacturers may have been aware of potential cognitive risks associated with long-term use of gabapentin or pregabalin.
  • Reports of memory problems and other cognitive side effects may not have been adequately investigated.
  • Patients and healthcare providers may not have received sufficient warnings about these potential risks.

People who were prescribed gabapentin or pregabalin for an extended period of time and were later diagnosed with early-onset dementia or cognitive impairment may qualify to pursue compensation.

How dementia and cognitive impairment can affect your life

Early-onset dementia and cognitive impairment can affect much more than memory. Depending on the severity of the condition, individuals may experience challenges that interfere with their ability to work, maintain their independence and perform everyday activities.

Some of the potential impacts include:

  • Loss of income: Memory problems, difficulty concentrating and changes in cognitive function may make it difficult to continue working or maintain previous employment.
  • Increased medical expenses: Individuals may require ongoing medical appointments, specialized treatment or additional support to manage their condition.
  • Loss of independence: Cognitive impairment can make everyday tasks, such as managing finances, driving or maintaining a household, increasingly difficult.
  • Need for ongoing care: As symptoms progress, some individuals may require assistance from family members, professional caregivers or long-term care facilities.
  • Emotional and personal challenges: Dementia and cognitive impairment can also affect emotional well-being and overall quality of life.

If you were diagnosed with early-onset dementia or cognitive impairment after taking gabapentin or pregabalin, you may qualify to pursue compensation. Complete the form on this page to check your eligibility.

What are gabapentin and pregabalin?

Gabapentin and pregabalin are prescription medications sold under the brand names Neurontin and Lyrica, respectively. Both belong to a class of medications known as gabapentinoids.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved these medications to treat seizures and certain types of nerve pain. However, doctors may also prescribe them for other conditions, including:

  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Insomnia
  • Back pain
  • Anxiety
  • Migraines

This practice is known as off-label prescribing.

Regardless of why these medications were prescribed, research has raised concerns about a potential connection between long-term use of gabapentin or pregabalin and cognitive decline.

What the research says about gabapentin and cognitive decline

Several studies have examined a potential connection between gabapentin use and an increased risk of dementia and cognitive impairment. Key findings include:

  • A study published in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine found that patients who received six or more gabapentin prescriptions had a 29% higher risk of dementia and an 85% higher risk of mild cognitive impairment.
  • A study involving more than 200,000 patients found an association between gabapentin or pregabalin use and an increased risk of dementia, particularly among younger patients. The research is available through the National Library of Medicine.
  • A University of Kentucky study linked gabapentin use to increased odds of cognitive decline and difficulty performing everyday activities among older adults.

While these studies do not prove that gabapentin or pregabalin causes dementia, they raise concerns about potential cognitive risks and whether manufacturers adequately warned patients. Attorneys are investigating potential gabapentin lawsuits that could allow eligible individuals to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income and other damages.

What compensation could be available through a gabapentin lawsuit?

While compensation is never guaranteed, individuals who successfully pursue a gabapentin dementia lawsuit may be able to recover damages for medical expenses, lost income, ongoing care costs, pain and suffering and other losses. The amount of compensation available depends on the circumstances of each case.
