Lipitor Drug LawsuitAs the Lipitor multidistrict litigation continue to grow,  a new Lipitor lawsuit was filed last week against drug maker Pfizer, alleging the heart disease drug caused type-2 diabetes.

Plaintiff Gail K. of Indiana began taking Lipitor in 2001 and discontinued using the medication in 2015. In June of 2007, at age 52 she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes.

According to the Lipitor lawsuit, Gail suffered grievous physical injuries which led to economic and other loss including, but not limited to: pain and suffering, emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life.

Ten counts were brought against Pfizer including: Negligence, negligent misrepresentation, negligent design, strict product liability (design defect and failure to warn), breaches of express and implied warranty, and unjust enrichment. Gail is seeking punitive damages against Pfizer as well.

Lipitor Complications

Lipitor (atorvastin calcium), is a cholesterol-lowering drug in the statin family and is one of best-selling prescription drug of all time. Originally approved in 1996, Lipitor seemed to be a game-changer for many patients who had high cholesterol that was unable to be controlled by other means.

High cholesterol is linked with heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular complications, and Lipitor has helped reduce the risk of these serious health issues in many individuals. However, Lipitor has not shown the same positive effects across the board, and women are typically the ones who pay the price.

While doctors aren’t completely sure of the mechanisms underlying the disease, many women are developing type-2 diabetes after having been on Lipitor for some time. It is suspected that Lipitor may be exhibiting some sort of hormonal influence to trigger the disease development.

Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes

Type-2 diabetes is a condition that can affect all systems in a person’s body, and by extension, all areas of a individual’s life. Individuals become lifelong patients, requiring frequent monitoring and testing. Most individuals with diabetes are unable to manage the condition without medication, and often, several different types of diabetes medication.

Diabetes is linked to organ disease and damage including cardiovascular damage, kidney damage, eye damage and resultant vision problems, foot damage (often from peripheral neuropathy), generalized nerve damage, skins issues, hearing complications and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease (commonly referred to now as Type 3 diabetes).
