LG Dishwasher LED Control Panel Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Mark Wheeler filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc.
  • Why: Wheeler claims LG knowingly sells some of its QuadWash-enabled dishwashers with defective LED control panels.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

LG Electronics USA knowingly sells certain dishwashers containing defective LED control panels, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Mark Wheeler claims some of LG’s QuadWash-enabled dishwashers are eventually rendered “inoperable” due to the alleged LED control panel defect.

Wheeler claims moisture is able to penetrate the LED control panels and damage the electronic parts within them on account of the defect.

The water damage eventually renders the dishwasher’s control panel “unresponsive” and makes it so that it can no longer be used to “commence a wash cycle as expected or intended,” the LG class action alleges.

Wheeler claims LG has known about the defect since at least 2015 due to receiving consumer complaints but yet has failed to either remedy the issue or disclose it to the public.

“Although LG has long known, or had reason to know, that Class Dishwashers’ Control Panels are Defective and are unfit for their ordinary and intended purpose and incapable of performing as warranted, LG failed to disclose and actively concealed this material fact from Plaintiffs and the Class,” the LG class action states.

LG Class Action Claims Replacement Dishwasher Part Also Likely Fail

Wheeler argues the only way for a consumer to be able to continue using the dishwasher is to replace the control panel with a “non-defective replacement component,” which will also “likewise fail shortly after installation.”

“Because LG repairs Class Dishwashers using defective Control Panels that are doomed to fail, its warranty offers little in the way of actual relief and fails of its essential purpose,” the LG class action states.

Further, Wheeler argues LG adds “insult to injury” by claiming the defect does not exist after its one-year “labor and parts” warranty ends, at which point he says the company declines to offer further coverage.

Wheeler claims LG is guilty of breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability and is in violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Wheeler wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who have purchased one or more of an affected LG QuadWash-enabled dishwasher.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with compensatory and punitive damages for himself and all class members.

LG agreed to pay $1.5 million last year to resolve claims it sold defective refrigerators that failed to maintain the temperature level necessary to preserve perishables such as food and medicine.

Our lg dishwasher is only 2 years old and went out …. The replacement part was $280 … ridiculous! Class action definitely needs to happen

  2. BK says:

We bought lg quad dishwasher ldp68tss from best buy 2 yrs back and have the same control panel issue. Best buy charged $129 to diagnose the problem and Lg customer service wants $350 to replace the faulty panel. How do we join the lawsuit?

  3. Carolyn says:

I purchased a LG dishwasher in 2019. Bought 3 year extended warranty. Control panel went out. Called to make repair appt on extended warranty. Extended warranty had gone out 2 months prior to when my dishwasher quit working. Paid over $800 for a piece of crap! Not to mention it is hard to find a repairman to work on it. Found one about 50 miles away…$255 just to drive up in driveway. I said “Forget it…will buy another dishwasher”.

I’ve had problems with the LG dishwasher model LDT5678BD since being installed about 3 years ago. I purchased this unit along with a full suite of kitchen appliances from Home Depot as part of a kitchen remodel. After a few loads of dishes, the dishwasher started having a problem similar to those described by others in this post. I found that power cycling the unit would get it working again. After putting up with this for about a year, I contacted LG and as I recall the warranty had expired. I hadn’t taken action soon enough to have it repaired by a service technician. So I just ordered the replacement component and replaced it myself. That seemed to fix the problem for a short time, but then the same difficulties started again. Evidently the replacement part had not been redesigned to resolve the defect, or the problem is in some other component of the dishwasher. It’s not that the unit doesn’t function, but it sure is inconvenient. This past week, I decided to replace the unit with another and did not choose to purchase another LG. Instead I purchased (KitchenAid) and installed it yesterday. I really hate to junk the LG but with the defect it was just getting to be more trouble that it was worth trying to work around the problem. By the way, I also had problems with the LG refrigerator after less that 2 years of use, but fortunately was able to get the unit repaired under warranty. So far no problems with the LG Microwave and Electric Range. I’m disappointed that LG knew they had a design defect but evidently did nothing to remedy the problem. What puzzles me is that this has continued to be a problem for several years, and evidently the control panel design was not redesigned to resolve the issue! I am interested in participating in the class action. It seems that LG has known of this problem for years and done nothing to make things right with their customers.

    1. C Gagliano says:

I have LG dishwasher 3 months now having trouble with control board, press power button and nothing happening

  5. William L. Lee says:

I have one of these LDFN454HT dishwashers how do I join the suit and what can I do NOW!

  6. Michael Nan Everett says:

I bought an LG quad wash dishwasher LDT7797BD in 2018. The control panel has gone out. I at most have used it once a week.

  7. Debbie Blair says:

We too have an LG dishwasher. The control panel has gone bad on it.

  8. Geoffrey P Benson says:

Yes, I have an LG dishwasher with a defective control panel. I have replaced the control panel one time a year ago and it is in need of a second contol panel. It started failing about 6 months after purchase. I have contacted LG and received no relief. I have been offered a “courtesy” repair one day ago and do not know as of now what a “courtesy” repair consists of. I am currently in the process of purchasing a new dishwasher (not LG) because I cannot wait on LGs spin policy any longer. These people are terrible.

  9. Mike Colleran says:

Ours flashed AE code making in inoperable. Big disappointment washer 4 years old was not used that much.

  10. Lynn Smoliak says:

We purchased an LG dishwasher in April of 2022. In May of 2023 it started flashing an AE code and just kept going Through what seemed to be a drying cycle. You could not turn off the machine it just ran for hours. Had to turn it off by unplugging it. Could leave it unplugged for days. Plug it in and it would turn back on with same AE code and start right back in it’s drying cycle. Called a tech out. Seems it has a leak a defective pump which is $600 for the part not including labor! And of course out of warranty because we are past the year mark. You spend $800 on a dishwasher to have it last a year and then have to spend pretty much the same amount as the appliance to fix it. LG won’t help and doesn’t care. Wish I would have dug further into reviews it is definitely a big problem with their dishwashers. We will be buying a Bosch next. We did let it sit for a month and the leak obviously drained and is slow enough we were able to use the dishwasher for another 5 months and it threw that code again the day before Thanksgiving of course and doesn’t work. So off to buy another dishwasher this weekend. 18 months later after purchasing a $800 LG dishwasher. That replaced our 28 year old GE dishwasher.
