LG Dishwasher LED Control Panel Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Mark Wheeler filed a class action lawsuit against LG Electronics USA, Inc.
  • Why: Wheeler claims LG knowingly sells some of its QuadWash-enabled dishwashers with defective LED control panels.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

LG Electronics USA knowingly sells certain dishwashers containing defective LED control panels, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Mark Wheeler claims some of LG’s QuadWash-enabled dishwashers are eventually rendered “inoperable” due to the alleged LED control panel defect.

Wheeler claims moisture is able to penetrate the LED control panels and damage the electronic parts within them on account of the defect.

The water damage eventually renders the dishwasher’s control panel “unresponsive” and makes it so that it can no longer be used to “commence a wash cycle as expected or intended,” the LG class action alleges.

Wheeler claims LG has known about the defect since at least 2015 due to receiving consumer complaints but yet has failed to either remedy the issue or disclose it to the public.

“Although LG has long known, or had reason to know, that Class Dishwashers’ Control Panels are Defective and are unfit for their ordinary and intended purpose and incapable of performing as warranted, LG failed to disclose and actively concealed this material fact from Plaintiffs and the Class,” the LG class action states.

LG Class Action Claims Replacement Dishwasher Part Also Likely Fail

Wheeler argues the only way for a consumer to be able to continue using the dishwasher is to replace the control panel with a “non-defective replacement component,” which will also “likewise fail shortly after installation.”

“Because LG repairs Class Dishwashers using defective Control Panels that are doomed to fail, its warranty offers little in the way of actual relief and fails of its essential purpose,” the LG class action states.

Further, Wheeler argues LG adds “insult to injury” by claiming the defect does not exist after its one-year “labor and parts” warranty ends, at which point he says the company declines to offer further coverage.

Wheeler claims LG is guilty of breach of express warranty and breach of implied warranty of merchantability and is in violation of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Wheeler wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who have purchased one or more of an affected LG QuadWash-enabled dishwasher.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with compensatory and punitive damages for himself and all class members.

LG agreed to pay $1.5 million last year to resolve claims it sold defective refrigerators that failed to maintain the temperature level necessary to preserve perishables such as food and medicine.

Our 3 year old LG dishwasher has a defective control panel. Lights flash, etc. After reading many comments I concluded moisture in the panel was the cause. After each cycle I would open the door to allow moisture to escape. That worked for 2 years but today, the day before Thanksgiving it stopped working altogether! Off to buy a GE!

I have an LG dishwasher model number LDS5040ST. It typically had a burnt odor when operated. In October 2022, the dishwasher stopped heating the water. I ordered a heating coil, but when I went to replace it I found burnt wires at a connection to the base of the motor. I kept the original coil, and cleaned the wires and connection. The dishwasher worked fine. A short while later, the dishwasher stopped again and I found burnt wires and connector behind the door panel. I fixed the wires and the dishwasher worked for about a year. November 2023, the dishwasher started smoking and stopped working. The same area behind the panel had wires and connectors burnt beyond repair.

Our 3year old LG Quad dishwasher just shut down. It has been quirky for a year funny how it made it past its warranty! We have an AE code. As this is our second occurrence we will purchase a Bosch from Costco not Best Buy. Costco’s after sales purchases is second to none! They’ll replace anything that fails to please! They also provide plugs and hoses haul away and install for the same low price! Best Buy can never compete! I’m really pissed off with Best Buy and LG

  4. Denise Brown says:

Our 3 year old LG dishwasher continues to “tweek out” each time that we try to start the machine. The lights flash continuously and we can’t start it. Poor purchase on our part!

  5. Stephen says:

Panel had to replaced within 6 months of being installed. Tech said it was due to moisture in the assembly and will happen again.

  6. Andy Ramirez-Hilton says:

My LG dishwasher will turn off during the middle of a cycle. It will also become glitchy and the screen will either blink or won’t even turn on. Horrible purchase!!

  7. Nita Sullivan says:

My LG Dishwasher of 5 years stopped working. I called a service rep who said the control panel was no longer available from LG. I called LG and they said it was. Can’t decide whether to fix it or buy another brand.

  8. Mika says:

How did you get a replacement panel? Did you have to pay for it? If not please reply with contact phone number. Thank you.

  9. Trisha says:

Just replaced my control panel due to this issue

  10. Chris Gardipee says:

Yes same problem here. We are on our third panel
