HughesNet Satellite Internet Class Action Settlement

By Mike Holter

HughesNet settlementHughes Communications has reached a class action lawsuit settlement that will provide either $5 or $40 cash to certain former HughesNet satellite internet subscribers.

The HughesNet settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Walter v. Hughes Communications, that alleges Hughes misrepresented the actual speed of its HughesNet internet service, unjustly cut off customers from their Internet for violating the company’s “Fair Access Policy,” and charged improper Early Termination Fees.

Class Members of the HughesNet class action settlement include everyone in the U.S. who, at any time from May 15, 2005 to March 2, 2012, subscribed to any of the following Hughes Consumer Service Plans: Home, Pro, Pro Plus, Small Office, Business Internet, Elite, ElitePlus, ElitePremium, Basic, Power 150 and Power 200.

As part of the class action lawsuit settlement, Hughes has agreed to make cash payments to eligible Class Members who submit a valid claim form postmarked no later than September 28, 2012. Claim forms can be downloaded or submitted online at www.SatelliteInternetSettlement.com.

Class Members who paid an Early Termination Fee before December 6, 2010 will get $40 from the class action settlement, while Class Members who were no longer a Hughes Consumer Plan subscriber as of March 2, 2012 and did not pay an ETF before December 6, 2010 will receive $5.

I have had Hughesnet for less than a month, and it is crap. My son cannot do his homework online. They tell us after it is installed, we cannot download but so much. It will not download just my sons homework. We called three days ago and they said they would upgrade . It still did not work. We called to cancel our service and explained why we are cancelling. Then, they said they were billing us for 600.00 dollars above the 200.00 they were charging us for cancelling. This is the kind of crap that is killing our country. Causing good people to do bad things. When a man sticks a gun in your face to rob you, you kill that man the first chance you have. What is the difference when people take your hard earned money for doing nothing. They started trying to charge our credit card two weeks after it was installed. Only because we paid them 300.00 up front. Thank God we have our credit cards fixed where no one can charge the card without our authorization before they will pay. The minute our cards are used our phones ring. We either authorize it or not right then. I have had several companies before, and most of them will work with us. Hughesnet is thieves, and their service is crap. I will tell everyone I know not to use them and if everyone would do that, it might put them out of business.

I just got hughesnet myself and it was a HUGE MISTAKE! My wife and I run out of data in 10 to 14 days! 10GBs. Before we had Hughes net we never went over 5GBs a month on cell phones. Same cell phones and/or iPads I must add as before. Movies, gaming and YouTube are out of the question. To me that’s absurd! Oh and even pics are not recommended! It’s 2017 and videos are automatic on most websites in the form of adds among others. This service is a rip off

Hughes net took out their payment 10 days earlier than they were supposed too.

Do not fall for any of their lies. I cancelled service after 4 yrs(couldnt get anything else where I live) in June. Here it is August and they have their equipment back but are still billing me! Got a letter from collection office today for $600. I have called them but always get put on hold and then never answered again. This company has major issues!!! Should be shut down!!!!!!!!!!!

We got our $5. settlement check 2 weeks ago and cashed it. The bank returned the check for Insufficient Funds!!!

I beg to differ Corrosive. There is, of course, the trial period. I contacted HN repeatedly during this time regarding issues I was having. Slowness, disconnects, etc. My bad that I took their explanations to be sensible and true. Nothing got better, but after the 30 days I was locked in. 1.5 years later I was so fed up with the horrid service, physics or no, that I ordered another service and gladly paid both for 6 months in order to have decent service and avoid my early termination fee. Funny, physics hasn’t prevented my new provider from meeting my needs and exceeding my expectations. Yes many contracts have an early termination fee. Yep, that was more than the fee, but the principal matters here. We have become immune to ETFs in many cases. None of that makes them right. I am in management in the insurance industry in California. Many companies have early termination fees in our state. Mine does not. Why? Because we honor our promises and as a result have so small a percentage of new customers that leave us that the cost we suffer establishing new customers does not cause us issue. I am always proud to announce this to our new customers. I would love to see more service organizations give up the ETFs and actually just start earning their customers loyalty. Novel concept eh? Not something I would recommend to HughesNet however since their service is horrible, both the internet and the customer service. Probably my favorite part of my interaction with HughesNet was when I finally reached February 28, 2013 and could cancel without a fee, and called them to do so, they all of a sudden loved me. Had never loved me before. Had not been willing to do one thing for me. But once I hit that date, there were all kinds of things that could be done for me……for free. Really? Gotta go, looking for the next place I can bad mouth HughesNet. It’s a big world and I am entitled to spread the love through every opportunity available. Have a great, HughesNet free, day. I will.

WE HATE HUGHES NET….hello att your slowest dsl is faster. will be facebooking this too!

  9. Melissa Mudd says:

Hughes net is a joke and a scam. I was told at the time of installation that their service would offer gaming, videos and internet. WRONG! Now to cancel is $400.00! I have cancelled and til my dying day will not pay them another penny. I have even cancelled my bank account and once it gets to collections I will dispute that as well. BEWARE OF HUGHES NET and their lies!
