HughesNet Satellite Internet Class Action Settlement

By Mike Holter

HughesNet settlementHughes Communications has reached a class action lawsuit settlement that will provide either $5 or $40 cash to certain former HughesNet satellite internet subscribers.

The HughesNet settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Walter v. Hughes Communications, that alleges Hughes misrepresented the actual speed of its HughesNet internet service, unjustly cut off customers from their Internet for violating the company’s “Fair Access Policy,” and charged improper Early Termination Fees.

Class Members of the HughesNet class action settlement include everyone in the U.S. who, at any time from May 15, 2005 to March 2, 2012, subscribed to any of the following Hughes Consumer Service Plans: Home, Pro, Pro Plus, Small Office, Business Internet, Elite, ElitePlus, ElitePremium, Basic, Power 150 and Power 200.

As part of the class action lawsuit settlement, Hughes has agreed to make cash payments to eligible Class Members who submit a valid claim form postmarked no later than September 28, 2012. Claim forms can be downloaded or submitted online at www.SatelliteInternetSettlement.com.

Class Members who paid an Early Termination Fee before December 6, 2010 will get $40 from the class action settlement, while Class Members who were no longer a Hughes Consumer Plan subscriber as of March 2, 2012 and did not pay an ETF before December 6, 2010 will receive $5.

It is strange that when they settled it was not even a fair settlement. Early termination fees are $300.00 and they give you $40.00 if you paid the $300.00. What kind of crap is that? And then you call them up and the people on the other end of the phone are not located in this country. I am not paying their f%^$#@n termination fee. They did not deliver what they promised.

Oh, just to bring up something else. I have never heard of a contract NOT having an early termination fee. AT&T has had them, every cable and DSL provider as well. I feel this lawsuit includes nothing but people who feel they are entitled to the whole world.

It is funny with all the mis-information here. I have been with HN for 3 years now, they DO offer a “trial” phase, the first 30 days, cancel then and all you had to pay was the month of service and the install fee. No cancellation fees.

Second, HN is the ONLY wireless service aside from a WISP(which those are very rare) that offers potentially unlimited downloads. It is idiot customers that don’t understand laws of physics, nor how technology works that gives HN a bad name.

I feel bad for all of the Hughes Net customers. I lucked out and didn’t subscribe to them simply because when I was chatting with a customer service representative, I asked him, “how can you guarantee me a higher download speed without first letting me try it out?” He didn’t quite understand the question, so I put it simpler, “Do you offer some kind of free trial to see how fast the speed is?”, and he said no. So with that, I said I’ll stick with dial up. I’m glad I made that decision, and I hope that the ones who fell for the lame service get justice of some kind.

I also have Hughes Net. The reason I used them is because I live 6 miles out of town and there was no other service available except dial up and I didn’t want that. I was told that the internet service through Hughes Net was fast. They lied and I have had nothing but trouble and internet service that is slower than a turtle. I can fix me a cup of coffee and my internet still isn’t ready to use. I called to cancel because I am now with Verizon for all my services. It is amazing how fast the internet is. I am going to cancel my service next month and they will never get another penny from us. I disconnected the Hughes Net equipment and I am enjoying Verizon Internet Speed!!!!

I agree with Juan 100%. I had Hughes.net. And my account is on hold tell july. They had said free installation. And then i had moved. And have there service for one year. It cost me a seervice fee. And an extra $ 125.00 just for haveing to put in on a pole. And it would take hours, if not all day.
To update something. I changed to wildblue. No one had told me about the money one would have to spend To make my Hughes.net to run faster. So at this time i have suspended my accout with Hughes.net for 6 mounths. I have no intentions of going back to hughes, net. So I will have to pay a early termiation fee. This is one of the biggest scams I have ever seen ! Im just hopeing to get out of this contract. With as low cost as posable. God speed in bring AT&T to the rule arias.

I do not believe a business such as Hughes.net is allow to do business. The customer services is bad, the equipment installation is worst, but the internet Service is the worst. To claim better than dial up..I had dial up…and it was faster.
That time I had hughes.net was the worst internet service i have ever had…I would rather not have internet than ever use Hughes.net ever again. I believe Hughes.net charges such a high early termination fee is due to Hughes.net their services is the bad and consumer’s get so frustrated change internet service, but the good thing is the word is getting out…Hughes.net is the worst..

I love the fact that I got a letter from a collection agency on behalf of Hughes Net before I could return the equipment and pay the final bill of nearly $1000 for terminating early because the service was slower than dial up if it even worked. Just another example of the rich getting richer and oh well to everybody else.

It’s funny how Hugesnet is able to slip out of this with a slap on the wrist, oh but all the lawyers made out on it. But it was decided that a settlement should be reached (so hugesnet could continue to rob people of there hard earned money!). I suspect the judge to be a crock as well, seeing as he does not have to live from pay check to pay check! Nor does he have to wait five minutes for a single Email to open, but he let huges net still charge people for early termination fees for what? and people wonder why this country is a mess with no money, oh but that judge is living large out in Cali. I’ll bet he/she has horses we pay for……. If he/she losses everything, see how they get by living hand to mouth!
