Honda class action lawsuitA federal judge has granted final approval to a massive class action lawsuit settlement between American Honda Motor Co. and more than 1.87 million consumers who owned or leased a Honda Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, or Crosstour. Many of these consumers will automatically receive a warranty extension while others will have to submit a claim by April 10, 2014, to receive reimbursement for money they paid to repair problems related to an oil defect in the vehicles.

The Honda class action settlement resolves allegations that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million vehicles that excessively burned oil, causing the engine to misfire and forcing consumers to constantly monitor oil levels and incur bills for repairs of components damaged by the Honda engine oil defect.

Honda has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit, filed in 2012, late last year. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston granted preliminary approval to the Honda engine class action settlement on October 9, 2013. She granted final approval to the deal at a March 21, 2014, Final Fairness Hearing, calling it “fair, reasonable, and adequate.”

Class Members of the Honda engine class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
  • 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2012 Honda Crosstour

Class Members do not have to take any action to receive the warranty extension offered under the Honda engine misfire settlement, which will cover repairs for the vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.

To receive full compensation for vehicle repairs, however, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014.

Details on how to file a valid claim can be found in our Open Settlement section under Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Lawsuit Settlement.

The case is Alex Soto, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 3:12-cv-01377-SI, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

UPDATE: Reimbursements from the Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Settlement were mailed July 14, 2014. A second wave of checks will go out this Fall, according to the Settlement Administrator.  If you get a check, let us know!

Can we all get together to step up against Honda again ….Our 2016 Honda Odyssey has the same problem and this is a misconduct. I am not just talking about the money, I do not want them to get away to continuingly misleading Honda clients….I do not want another family go through this!!!!!!!! Can we please get together find those law firms and hold them accountable. This has to stop.

In March of 2015 I purchased a 2012 Honda Pilot and of course knew NOTHING of arecall/ or class action settlement regarding the recall “13-082”. Obviously I wasn’t notified because I was not the owner when this class action was taking place. Fast forward to 2022… I still have my pilot and absolutely no problems with it prior or any of my Honda’s I’ve had in the past. But in March of 2022 my 2012 Honda Pilot Check Engine light comes on and my pilot is trying to stall on me. I got it to a Honda Dealer and they informed my cylinder #3 is bad and needs to be replaced… $5k is what I paid out of pocket to have it fixed. Then I noticed on the invoice it stated “tech checked for a bulletin “AND he found one… of course I started researching, which has lead me to here. With the previous class action settlement, I clearly could not be notified and I certainly was not informed by the Honda Dealer that sold me the Pilot of such recall/Class Settlement. I too believe I should be reimbursed and if another lawsuit is filed, I want to be notified.

I have a 2014 odyssey and have changed my plugs in cylinder 2 3 times this past year, my mechanic says it will keep happening until Honda fixes it. Dealer and Honda both deny it’s an issue, despite lawsuits and told me I’m on the hook. Unacceptable

Bypass the VCM feature – VCM Muzzler

      1. Barbara Lengyel-Ledeczi says:

my car is 6 years old bought brand NEW I am not bypassing anything …this is not right

  5. Kate says:

2012 Odyssey in shop now for this problem. Grrr. Reading through peoples”s comments about the same problem makes me wonder whether it’s worth the repair. And yes Honda Shd be held responsible!

    1. Barbara Lengyel-Ledeczi says:

we need to held the accountable this is a misconduct

  6. Sandra Mullikin says:

I just had to spend over $4200 for this same issue. I have a 2012 Honda Odyssey. I purchased an extended warranty but am over 100,000 miles. If the lawsuit is reopened, I would like to make a claim. This is my first Honda but if they don’t do something, it will almost certainly be my last. I purchased it used from the dealership and was told it was a great car that normally lasted 300,000 miles. What really upsets me is they should have known based on the dates of this lawsuit. We purchased it after 2014. No one wants to do anything to help me. If a lawyer could get part or all of my money back, that would certainly be welcome. I have receipts.

    1. Carolyn Ezell says:

Sandra, I will join you in any class action suit against Honda Motor Company. I have a 2014 Honda Pilot with the same miss firing problem. I have had it at three mechanics, each has done their do diligences. I was told to take to Honda dealership to have a Honda system check, $89.95. Was told a $3000.00 piston repair would fix the problem. Have already put around $2000.00 into the automobile in past year due to the miss firing. We have owned 3 Hondas and drove them well over 200000 plus miles. Loved them, never had to deal with a problem or management. Will not go through this again, only legal counsel. Please tell me how to join this class action suit.

    2. Linda says:

I also have a 2012 Honda pilot with the same problem and bought it in 2014. I had no idea that it could have had these types of problems. Its no longer drivable and mechanic says it needs a new engine

      1. Sean says:

I have a 2015 Pilot with 88k on it same issue. Talking to Honda about it is useless. They need to pay up and fix this. It will be the last Honda we buy.

    3. Lady K says:

I am having the same issues. Purchased the vehicle from Nalley Acura in Georgia four years ago. It was under warranty for 3 years. Was getting routine maintainability every 4 to 5 months. The piston rings never came up as an issue until AFTER my warrnty expired by 30 miles.

      1. Nick Tolar says:

My 2011 Honda Odyssey has the same problem with the engine misfiring. Had no idea of the class action till it was too late. I’ve had Hondas in the past and was pleased with them. Honda wants $7,000 to fix. I’ll never buy another Honda I would definitely want to participate in another law suit if possible.

  7. D Martin says:

Add me to the list of people with cylinder problems. 2012 Honda and never informed of this ….I’ve driven Hondas for over 20 years, also my mom and sister and inlaws. What a betrayal! Honda America so the right thing! This failing economy and now a broken van. This is fraud.

  8. Zhi Tong says:

My Honda Odyssey 2015 EX had the check engine/VSA lights come on at 120900 miles in January 2022, which was diagnosed for a problem with the engine misfire cylinder 1. After changing oil, the mechanic technician resat these lights. The these lights turned on again February 4 within three weeks when I had around 450 miles of driving. It appeared to be common problem with its engine misfires. American Honda should be responsible for this problem, and have it fixed as it did for the Honda Odyssey 2008-2013.

    1. TOM NAUGHTON says:

I agree , have exact same problem with my 2016 Odyssey. I think class action lawsuit should be started for all Honda odysseys. Tom Naughton

  9. Gary D. says:

Same problem with 2015 Odyssey. Burning through oil. Replaced all the plugs, coils, had the transmission flushed (as recommended by Honda dealer). It seems to be the VCM system. I’m going to try the VCM muzzler II, but my mechanic doesn’t think it will help. He thinks the piston rings are worn, which will cost several thousand dollars to repair. The vehicle only has 139,000 miles in it and has been meticulously maintained. It’s mind-boggling that Honda hasn’t corrected whatever is causing the failure for so many people over so many years. It’s worse that they’re not willing to work with those affected. I would certainly add my name to the list in support of action against Honda if I can’t get this resolved.

    1. Alex G says:

Me too! 120k miles and well maintained honda pilot (2015) wtf the dealership is telling me $650 to diagnose why cylinder 3 is misfiring and saying that i should probly replace the engine. Im furious i just paid off this car!

    2. Rohan M says:

I have this issue now. 2010 accord coupe V6 EX. Original owner. Never got a letter in the mail. Now i have 83,000 miles and cylinder 1 and 5 misfire. Ecm/pcm failure. All at 1 shot.

  10. John Lee says:

Same here. 2014 honda odyssey $5k to repair..
