Honda class action lawsuitA federal judge has granted final approval to a massive class action lawsuit settlement between American Honda Motor Co. and more than 1.87 million consumers who owned or leased a Honda Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, or Crosstour. Many of these consumers will automatically receive a warranty extension while others will have to submit a claim by April 10, 2014, to receive reimbursement for money they paid to repair problems related to an oil defect in the vehicles.

The Honda class action settlement resolves allegations that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million vehicles that excessively burned oil, causing the engine to misfire and forcing consumers to constantly monitor oil levels and incur bills for repairs of components damaged by the Honda engine oil defect.

Honda has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit, filed in 2012, late last year. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston granted preliminary approval to the Honda engine class action settlement on October 9, 2013. She granted final approval to the deal at a March 21, 2014, Final Fairness Hearing, calling it “fair, reasonable, and adequate.”

Class Members of the Honda engine class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
  • 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2012 Honda Crosstour

Class Members do not have to take any action to receive the warranty extension offered under the Honda engine misfire settlement, which will cover repairs for the vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.

To receive full compensation for vehicle repairs, however, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014.

Details on how to file a valid claim can be found in our Open Settlement section under Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Lawsuit Settlement.

The case is Alex Soto, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 3:12-cv-01377-SI, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

UPDATE: Reimbursements from the Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Settlement were mailed July 14, 2014. A second wave of checks will go out this Fall, according to the Settlement Administrator.  If you get a check, let us know!

2011 Honda pilot! I have had several issues with this as well and had it just die on me in busy highway traffic! So dangerous!! I paid mearly $12,000 for that car used a few years ago! I had a 2005 Pilot before and absolutely LOVED IT!! I wish I had just known it would use the heck out of oil too!! I wanted a reliable car it hasn’t been that at all!! Always an issue to worry me or lights on the dash ALWAYS! NOW ILL GET NOTHING FOR THIS VEHICLE! I want to be added if one gets started

  2. Steve says:

We have a 2012 Pilot and we are dealing with the same issue. We are dropping it off at Honda tomorrow. I would be willing to join a class action lawsuit if there is one. I purchased my Pilot used from Honda in 2016 but they are telling me since its longer that the 8 years they extended the warranty it is not covered.

  3. Nicky says:

My 2011 Honda Odyssey is currently getting towed to the dealer and I suspect this is exactly what is going on. I wanted to leave a comment just in case there’s a new lawsuit I want to be a part of it, although It’s very possible I will have to walk away from my car when they call me tomorrow and tell me it’s $5k+ to fix it.
I have loved and raved about my car for the last 10 years but will absolutely never buy another Honda again.

  4. Matthew Peretz says:

I just had this occur with my 2016 Odyssey. 5k for repairs of a known issue all to save some credits from EPA. Total BS. I will join lawsuit if filed.

    1. Michelle says:

      We will join as well

  5. Steve Miller says:

Add my name to the list of unhappy Honda Odyssey owners! Mine is a 2016, so the problems persist for cylinder #3. Once it hit 60,000 miles it stranded us and since then I have have had it cleaned and new spark plugs over and over. I am not willing to pay $3,200 for a fix of a problem Honda has known about for over ten years.

  6. Nancy Evans says:

I too have Pistol ring failure with misfiring and possibly engine replacement. When i contacted Honda about 2015 Honda Odyssey i was told I didn’t have the right VIN number to be repaired free. It appears their problem goes way beyond those identified.

  7. Jeffrey Bates says:

2010 Accord with 88, 000 miles on it. Literally driven by an old man very gingerly. #3 cylinder sucking oil and fouling the plugs. $5000 to “rebuild” engine? This is unacceptable. Flashing the computer to keep it out of VCM is not the fix! This car was supposed to be handed down for my college student. Now we can’t even drive it out of town! I will never own another Honda.

  8. Lonnie Lauriston says:

I have a 2009 Honda Pilot it has a problem oil consumption and misfiring. The checking engine is blinking. I have fix this problem twice and I would like to add my name to the list in support of action against Honda. I feel like it’s ongoing problem that needs to resolve.

  9. Dale Clark says:

2016 Honda Odyssey – Just had my engine partially rebuilt because of the vcm problem. $4,500!! Time to expand the lawsuit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Barbara Lengyel-Ledeczi says:

I wrote to Berger and Montague the listed law firm that was involved in the 2013 case. I agree its time to sue again!!!!! Come on people ……I do not want another family go through this ! I am not going to spend 5000$ on a 6 year old NEW car……this is misconduct ! I want them to stop doing this !

      1. Michaela says:

Hi have u heard anything back from the lawfirm? I am having same misfire issue.

      2. Michael Chin says:

        Any news?

      3. Keli says:

Hey! Did you find anything out?

      4. Jennifer says:

How do we get this lawsuit started. Same problem here with our 2015 Pilot.

        1. Jamie Young says:

Same here with a 2015 Odyssey. Any progress on a lawsuit?

    2. Charles E Johnson says:

I am having the same problem with my vehicle I have a 2012 Honda odyssey Torrent 173,000 do you think it is to late to get any thing done to it?

  10. Terry Sebacus says:

Hi Everyone – just my piece of info – I have a 2010 Honda Pilot- bought in 2018 – it would shudder and I thought it was the Transmission – long story short – I have invested in a $85 part from ebay called VCM muzzler II – buy the latest because you don’t have to adjust anything. Easy solution is to bypass the VCM feature. Do the research and YouTube the video on Honda VCM muzzler and follow the links for purchase. Easy installation
