A federal judge has granted final approval to a massive class action lawsuit settlement between American Honda Motor Co. and more than 1.87 million consumers who owned or leased a Honda Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, or Crosstour. Many of these consumers will automatically receive a warranty extension while others will have to submit a claim by April 10, 2014, to receive reimbursement for money they paid to repair problems related to an oil defect in the vehicles.
The Honda class action settlement resolves allegations that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million vehicles that excessively burned oil, causing the engine to misfire and forcing consumers to constantly monitor oil levels and incur bills for repairs of components damaged by the Honda engine oil defect.
Honda has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit, filed in 2012, late last year. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston granted preliminary approval to the Honda engine class action settlement on October 9, 2013. She granted final approval to the deal at a March 21, 2014, Final Fairness Hearing, calling it “fair, reasonable, and adequate.”
Class Members of the Honda engine class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:
- 2008-2012 Honda Accord
- 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
- 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
- 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
- 2012 Honda Crosstour
Class Members do not have to take any action to receive the warranty extension offered under the Honda engine misfire settlement, which will cover repairs for the vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.
To receive full compensation for vehicle repairs, however, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014.
Details on how to file a valid claim can be found in our Open Settlement section under Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Lawsuit Settlement.
The case is Alex Soto, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 3:12-cv-01377-SI, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
UPDATE: Reimbursements from the Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Settlement were mailed July 14, 2014. A second wave of checks will go out this Fall, according to the Settlement Administrator. If you get a check, let us know!

I have a 2010 Crosstour. I get codes P0300, P0301, P0303, P0306, and P0430. The miss fires has destroyed several catalytic converters, costing me thousands of dollars. I contact Honda, sent my receipts and requested a refund. They pretty much laughed in my face. This class action suit needs to be reopened. I purchased this car for my kid as a graduation present. He had the car for 3 months and I have 3500 invested in repairs. Help
I have a 2011 Honda Pilot and having problems with the engine. Oil consumption and now piston 2 and 6 are damaged no pressure at all. Having this kind of problems at 88,000 miles for a Honda Engine is not acceptable. I open a case with honda Manufacturing. They did not care. They don’t want to pay for this repair. I been a loyal honda costumer since 2006 and this cars are not ship 45 to 49,000 thousand dollars for this cars and having this issue, is garbage. You are wondering who I will go with my next purchase. Hyundai has a 10 years warranty on motors That would be my next option I gues.
2011 Honda Odyssey 3rd time replacing in 6months with cylinder misfire. Would be nice to see this be extended to anyone with this problem and not put a expiration date on it.
I have the same exact car and problem. $4,000 repair and they don’t seem to care.
Maybe there needs to be another class action suit. My 2013 has the misfire problem, but my VIN is not included in the extended warranty. They said it’s just a coincidence my car has the same issue.
I have 2013 pilot. pistons problem. Honda corp said it was manufacturing problem but my warranty expired so they won’t fix. Had car shield they said it was covered but 2wks later said i did break down because I drive to dealership to fix it. have notes of every phone call. Regarding the issue. They need to open lawsuits again.
Patricia,
you’re so right!!! They need to open this lawsuit up again, I have 2010 Honda Accord with only 57,000 miles ( I don’t drive far to work) and just heard about what Honda called was an (enhancement settlement) I was never notified by Honda of this or told about it until lights on dash came on and was down two quarts of oil. I am faithful with up keep on my vehicles. This is just down right wrong on Honda. The mechanic advised me of the settlement. I will NOT purchase another HONDA again!!!! and will advise family and friends to stay away from their products…
Yes, yes. Absolutely open the lawsuit again.
I have a Honda 2008 v6 and every winter I get P0301 code misfire since 2014. I purchase my car brand new. I did not know the car was had a defect.
The misfire P0301 also destroy my Cat Converter. I can not even pass the emission test. I have contacted Honda Corporation and they refuse to replace my Cat Coverter told me thats going to be my out of pocket expense. And I paid $25,000 bought brand new. Thats not fair to me. So I have been paying out of my pocket for all of these problems with my car because I love Hondas. But Honda does not care about me so I want them to buy my car back so I can buy me a new car.
I have a Honda Odyssey 2012 and remotely misfiring coming back all the time
We tried to fix, change the sparks the coils but same issue got back every time
What can I do ?
Where can I check the settlement??
I have a Honda Odyssey 2012 that is having some misfiring cylinder issues since the begining of the year. My vehicle is still under warranty extension until september 2020. However, the vehicle was purchased in the US and I moved to Canada in 2018 bringing the van with me. I called Honda Canada and Honda USA and went to see local dealers. They gave me conflicting information. Honda USA said “all warranties are void when a car is exported in a different country”. Honda Canada said extended warranty due to lawsuits are not typical warranty and are more like a recall and should be honored across North America. Any idea of who I should contact or what I should do to try to get my local dealer to do the work?
I’m having the same issue with the 2011 Honda Odyssey. Misfire # 4. Took it in to the shop three times for the same issue with code P0304. We’ve had the coil pack replaced and a broken spark plug. Anyone have any suggestions? I’ve read here that Honda has covered a portion of the repairs if you’re outside of the 8 year window.
I had a piston ri g rebuilt under the extended warranty. I inquired about cylinder 4 when I got a P0304 and the denied it. Now I cant clear it and have replaced the ignition coil and ugh again. Still getting the same code. Honda unwilling to help.
I bought my 2012 Honda Odyssey from the dealership and almost 2 weeks ago the van had major issues so we took it to Honda and they found our piston rings need to be replaced. Then they said your 3 days out of the warranty. We’ve brought our van in multiple times to Honda service center and was never informed of the misfire settlement. Now they are saying Honda corporate will only pay part of the repair but note there are many more issues with a $7,000 price tag to fix. I believe every time we took it in for a problem they only put a bandaid on till my warranty expired and now we have major issues they won’t cover.
Forgot to mention we’ve only had our van for 4 years and still owe $7,000 on it.
I am having same problem with 2011 Honday Odyssey. I was not original owner. Is there anything that can be done?
