Honda class action lawsuitA federal judge has granted final approval to a massive class action lawsuit settlement between American Honda Motor Co. and more than 1.87 million consumers who owned or leased a Honda Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, or Crosstour. Many of these consumers will automatically receive a warranty extension while others will have to submit a claim by April 10, 2014, to receive reimbursement for money they paid to repair problems related to an oil defect in the vehicles.

The Honda class action settlement resolves allegations that Honda manufactured more than 1.5 million vehicles that excessively burned oil, causing the engine to misfire and forcing consumers to constantly monitor oil levels and incur bills for repairs of components damaged by the Honda engine oil defect.

Honda has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the class action lawsuit, filed in 2012, late last year. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston granted preliminary approval to the Honda engine class action settlement on October 9, 2013. She granted final approval to the deal at a March 21, 2014, Final Fairness Hearing, calling it “fair, reasonable, and adequate.”

Class Members of the Honda engine class action settlement include all current and former owners or lessees of one or more of the following Honda vehicles equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with Variable Cylinder Management (“VCM-2”), purchased or leased in the United States:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2008-2013 Honda Odyssey
  • 2009-2013 Honda Pilot
  • 2010-2011 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2012 Honda Crosstour

Class Members do not have to take any action to receive the warranty extension offered under the Honda engine misfire settlement, which will cover repairs for the vehicles within eight years of the original purchase or lease date of the vehicle, with no mileage limitation.

To receive full compensation for vehicle repairs, however, Class Members must submit a valid Claim Form with a copy of an original repair invoice or receipt plus proof of payments for repairs or replacement of parts on a Settlement Class Vehicle by April 10, 2014.

Details on how to file a valid claim can be found in our Open Settlement section under Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Lawsuit Settlement.

The case is Alex Soto, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Case No. 3:12-cv-01377-SI, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

UPDATE: Reimbursements from the Honda Engine Misfire Class Action Settlement were mailed July 14, 2014. A second wave of checks will go out this Fall, according to the Settlement Administrator.  If you get a check, let us know!

I have a 2009 Honda Accord (V-6) with 100,000 miles on it and have changed out spark plugs twice already. I have been told the ECO is causing my spark plug to keep filing out .

I have a 2011 Honda pilot. I was driving and the check engine light started flashing had to have my car towed to a mechanic who told me i have a misfire on 3 of my cylinders. Called Honda and they told me my car is out of the extended warrenty date. What can i do?

    1. Debi Kozler says:

What can you do? Start your own class action settlement

I have the same problem with my Honda. I’ve been told the extended warranty is for 8 years and starts from the day the car was sold.

Put a large sign on your car that warns everybody else about this settlement. If others are within the eight years, Honda will help some

    2. FeeBelly says:

Had same problem with misfires, oil leaks and smoking tailpipe on my 2010 Honda Pilot @ 70K miles…Got the pistons replaced using Class action settlement in 2017 by dealer and that didn’t help. I don’t think Honda really know what the problem is. Pilot is still smoking, misfiring and burning oil after Dealer said they replace the pistons rings on cylinders 1-4 costing them $2332.34. DO NOT BUY HONDA or ACURA vehicles, people, they piece of crap engines. By the way, bought Pilot new and has only been service by Dealer so problem is ALL ON HONDA. Another pilot owner advised me problem is Valve Stem Seal replacement but when Honda Dealer replaced Piston rings they did not replace my Valve Stem Seal. How could they forget not to. So I stop going to Honda Dealers. Got rid of piece of crap and never BUYING a Honda or Acura vehicles again.

  3. Paul says:

My 2012 Pilot Cylinder 5 has gone bad – no compression. The dealer said he have to do an engine overhaul to correct that Cylinder situation. May cost about $3,600 plus tax. I am if this fault is covered by the 8 year Extended Warranty. Please, can anyone shed some light.

  8. Lakisha Cross says:

I have a 2010 Honda Accord and it is doing the same thing with the engine making the same noise as I drive, and I am tired of working back and forth having to get the oil change because of oil leaking. Someone please tell me what I need to do for this issue.

  9. Michelle Mulligan says:

I have a 2010 Honda Accord 4 cylinder with 103,600 miles- It began “consuming” excessive oil around 91,000 miles. I have gone through exhaustive “oil consumption” tests with the local dealer. They did agree to do a “good will” repair and are charging me $500- though my warranty has a 0$ deductible. They will not cover the repair under my extended Honda Care Warranty which I bought for up to 120,00 miles. They said it is not a covered repair as I did not break down. I am so frustrated and wonder if more Honda owners of the vehicles that were not included in this class action suit are having similar issues.

    1. cathy fields says:

michelle, I have been fighting honda for a year now trying to get my 2009 accord fixed for the same issue in the class action lawsuit, started at 60,000 and now at 87,000. I’ve talked to honda directly and they just recently decided that they would pay for half the repair…..but i don’t understand if the v-6 models are covered and mine is doing to same thing, why isn’t mine covered. I want to start a class action lawsuit for all the 4 cyclinder hondas like you and I are having to deal with. Its been very frustrating.

      1. Eddie says:

I am in the same situation my Honda has been at the dealer for 4 weeks now waiting for Honda approval , and my car feel under the warranty Honda is refusing to fix , I am tired to pay for rentals out pocket , why even bother with this settlement and extend warranty if Honda does not honor . I have been desperate looking for solutions and nothing , I think I will have to hire a lawyer and spend even more money , never buy a Honda again ..:(
