Do you own an all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV or a Maverick pickup truck? If so, your vehicle may be affected by a Ford recall due to an alleged rear seat belt defect.
On Dec. 20, Ford Motor Co. said that it is recalling 2,626 all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks in the United States over the alleged defect, which may result in a rear passenger being inadequately restrained during a crash.
Ford reportedly filed paperwork with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week, but information about the Ford seat belt recall was not immediately available on the federal agency’s website.
What Causes the Ford Rear Seat Belt Defect?
According to Ford, the affected vehicles “have rear floor assemblies produced with tapping plates that may have oversized extruded bolt holes” that are used to attach rear seat belt buckles.
“Oversized extruded bolt holes may decrease the strength of the fastener joint causing inadequate attachment of the rear seat belts during loading, and if they detach, may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury,” the recall notice states.
No accidents or injuries have been attributed to the Ford seat belt defect, according to the automaker. Ford says the issue is related to a supplier error.
Ford says that customers will be notified about the Mach-3 and Maverick recall the week of Jan. 17, and dealers will repair the rear seat belt issue.
Ford Recall May Affect Electric Vehicle Tax Rebate
Affected vehicles that have not yet been delivered to customers will be put on hold until the seat belt issue is fixed.
As a result, some all-electric Ford vehicle purchasers who thought they would qualify for a $7,500 tax rebate this year may have to wait another year for the rebate as the credit only applies once a vehicle has been delivered and not the date it was purchased.
