Daiichi Sankyo is facing a new Benicar lawsuit after a man suffered severe chronic gastrointestinal symptoms.
He and his wife are filing legal action against the Japanese pharmaceutical company alleging the drug caused him chronic gastrointestinal symptoms that has resulted in long term health complications.
Illinois plaintiff Norman K. was prescribed Benicar in February 2010 to treat his hypertension and high blood pressure.
Not long after taking the drug, Norman developed chronic gastrointestinal symptoms that has led to potentially permanent health impairments.
One of the major impacts the Benicar complications had on Norman’s life is the marriage with his wife Gaynelle K.
According to his Benicar lawsuit, the chronic gastrointestinal symptoms Norman experienced caused him to be hospitalized and is now suffering from chronic nutritional problems.
In addition, Norman has lost over 100 pounds and can no longer leave the house or take care of himself.
Norman further alleges that his quality of life has been significantly decreased in direct result of Benicar complications.
Overview of Benicar Complications
Benicar (olmesartan) is one of the most popular hypertension medications in America with millions of patients using the medication on a yearly basis.
Benicar and other similar medications are used to prevent or lower the chances of cardiovascular attack, along with heart disease and other long term cardiac complications.
Even though Benicar has helped millions of patients, numerous injury reports of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms has raised major concern in the medical community and patient population.
Among these complications are sprue-like enteropathy, villous atrophy, chronic diarrhea and intense nausea.
Many of these symptoms are similar to to celiac disease, leading numerous Benicar patients to be misdiagnosed until a recent 2012 study conducted by the Mayo Clinic.
The study found that Benicar patients suffering from chronic gastrointestinal symptoms tested negative for celiac disease.
The FDA released a public safety announcement regarding Benicar gastrointestinal complications in July 2013 warning patients against chronic gastrointestinal symptoms.
Some of these patients developed chronic intestinal damage which prevents patients from absorbing all the nutrients from food.
Norman and many other patients allege that Daiichi Sankyo knew of these risks years before the FDA’s public warning, and concealed this information to protect the drug’s market value.
Due to the large number of similar claims, Norman’s lawsuit has been filed in a multidistrict litigation (MDL).
His claim will stand alongside other Benicar lawsuits, alleging similar damages from chronic gastrointestinal symptoms.
This Benicar Lawsuit is Case No. 1:16-cv-5116, in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
